* KeepingSecretsSucks: All of Yolanda's most important relationships are ruined by [[spoiler: Ramirez using her as his translator in secret backchannel communications with Tabini.]]

* MyHovercraftIsFullOfEels: A not-quite-fluent professional translator between humans and the alien atevi says, in the atevi language, "pregnant calendar" when she means "urgent meeting", and [[spoiler:"disintegrate and abase your weapons" when she means "surrender and throw down your weapons"]].

** Jase is also prone to this, although to a less politically disastrous extent (it helps that he isn't violently xenophobic). He accidentally says the staff are storm clouds when he's trying to say he thinks they're upset, and says he mistook a popping lightbulb that sounded like a gunshot for someone "shopping".

** When Bren is staying in Lady Damiri's apartments, an assassination attempt breaks some historic porcelains bearing Damiri's family symbol, the lily. She's equally as angry about the porcelain as she is about the danger to the staff, and Tabini considers it a powerful enough symbol that he sends her on a trip in his private jet to deliver the broken shard to her uncle in person. [[spoiler: Which shifts Tatiseigi to Tabini's side once and for all.]] Breaking the porcelain managed to break three big social norms at once: respect for craftsmanship, respect for the past, and finesse. Assassination attempts are not liked but are a part of doing business; ''messy'' assassination attempts are unforgivable.

* TactfulTranslation: A central trope of the Foreigner verse, where Bren's tact and diplomacy has resulted in him being the paidhi, the only one allowed to translate between the humans and the aliens, even when he is no longer the only person who can speak to the aliens. He also has not only to make the translation ''politer'', but ''understandable'', as humans are constantly using terms atevi cannot possibly understand (eg, a wish for a "friendly" relationship must become a wish for a "peaceful" relationship because atevi languages don't have that concept).

On other occasions, he simply refuses to translate something at all, because it was sufficiently rude that even the most delicate translation can't make it polite.

man'chi. You cannot change your ''man'chi'' except when it comes to sexual pair-bonding (eg, Damiri ends up shifting hers to Tabini, but it would be impossible for Banichi to go be loyal to another lord)--although it is possible to discover that it lies somewhere other than where you believed it did, a mainstay of atevi drama. And people at the very top, like Tabini and Ilisidi, have ''man'chi'' to no one, which is what makes them dangerous. (This is also what frightens them about humans; the fact "friendship" and "love" can go any which way seemingly at random is unthinkable to an atevi mind.)

murder. In the first book, a petitioner requests to file intent on her thieving ex-husband; Tabini's only point of argument is that it would be cheaper to sue.

* WhatIsThisThingYouCallLove: Atevi are completely incapable of feeling any emotion involving affection, since their brains are wired differently than humans. Having no common point of reference, they can't even ''understand'' it. The closest translation they have for "like" in the sense of affection is "like" in the sense of "I really like salads".

** The reverse also applies, since the atevi feel an emotion unknown to humans, ''man'chi''. Humans can ''sort'' of understand it, since it's sort of like loyalty and sort of like a flocking instinct, but humans can never fully understand it, never grasp it at a gut/intuitive level, and never ''ever'' actually feel it.

It's unchangeable except for sexual pair-bonding (which is why Banichi and Jago both separately mistake Bren's attempts to express friendship for Bren hitting on them). Bren notes that atevi couples don't always live together, even if they have children, presumably cases where the ''man'chi'' doesn't shift. This is also presumably why Jago reacts so strongly to [[spoiler: Bren getting dumped.]]

it's specifically the paidhi. the humans on Mospheira do have weapons.

Bren Cameron has the job of the ''paidhi'', the sole point of contact between the human LostColony on the island of Mospheira and the [[RubberForeheadAliens alien]] atevi on whose planet the humans are living. While Bren enjoys being a diplomat/translator/linguist/xenologist, it's not what you'd call an exciting job. Some excitement is added when the ''aiji'', the head of the atevi government, gives him a handgun as a gift, even though it's highly illegal for a human to posses a gun.

One faction builds jerry-rigged landing vessels and use them to land on the planet on the island of Mospheira, while the other faction takes the refueled ''Phoenix'' off into space, intent on finding long lost Earth. The humans who landed make contact with the atevi (who were just entering their Steam Age) and the humans and atevi seem to be getting on well. ** Atevi numerology is much more complex and wide-ranging than the human equivalent, since one of the more popular schools of atevi numerology includes "FasterThanLightTravel is impossible". When Bren's alternate as paidhi, Deana Hanks, is furthering the agenda of the conservative faction on Mospheira, she blithely reveals that humans arrived at the atevi homeworld via FTL travel and causes a ''major'' uproar; it takes an eccentric old atevi astronomer coming up with an entirely new mathematical philosophy to explain it for any of the atevi to begin to accept the concept.
