* IneptMage
** All three of the traditional mages (Kayneth, Tokiomi, and Waver) fulfill this to some extent. Kayneth is so prideful that he never really considers battle strategy. [[spoiler:He is [[BreakTheHaughty defeated and broken]] when he challenges Kiritsugu, and would have been killed during the first battle had Kiritsugu not been distracted by Rider.]] Tokiomi had a great plan to win the war, but failed to see the treachery of his apprentice Kirei. Waver simply fails to realize what he's getting himself into, and could have also been killed by Kiritsugu during the first battle had Kiritsugu not been distracted by Kayneth and Assassin.
** All three fail to take into consideration the personalities of their Servants. Kayneth doesn't understand Lancer's UndyingLoyalty and Rider makes it obvious that he would have disapproved of Kayneth as his Master. Tokiomi's failure to consider Archer's personality eventually leads to [[spoiler:his death by Kirei]]. And Waver simply doesn't have the personality to control someone like [[LargeHam Rider]]. Contrast Kiritsugu, whose plan to use Irisviel as a proxy Master makes her and Saber a great team-up, and Kirei, who gets to know Archer on a personal level.

* ForegoneConclusion - FateZero is written under the assumption that the reader has already finished FateStayNight. A fairly early author's note warns that you really shouldn't be expecting a happy ending, and that the writer will probably have to kill his entire cast in order to fit his ending into the timeline established in the previous story.
