* ArtisticLicenseHistory: The film depicts the explosion that preceded the Battle of the Crater as occurring in broad daylight. In real life, it happened before 5 am when it was still dark out. Furthermore, the depiction of the battle in the film portrays the entire Union attack happening into the Crater, with the result that the Confederates can simply surround the hole and fire down. In reality, the entire front at Petersburg was in contact that morning, with the Crater simply the focal point: a realistic portrayal would have a substantial Union concentration in the Crater but also attacking aboveground on the sides, with the Confederates fighting a defensive action in a line.

* ThrowingYourGunAtTheEnemy: during the Battle of the Crater, a Native American Confederate soldier throws his bayonet-fixed gun like a spear, nailing a Union soldier in the chest. While improbable, this is not outside the realm of possibility: muzzleloaders could not be reloaded with a bayonet fixed, and as a Native the thrower may have been more familiar (and thus deadlier) with a spear than with a normal rifle.

A Date With Rosie Palms is no longer a trope

* ADateWithRosiePalms: Ada indulges in "the easement of maiden, spinster, and widow," and, being the daughter of a minister, feels suitably guilty over it. After checking with a female relative who tells her basically everyone does it, she doesn't feel quite so bad.

* UnrelatedInTheAdaptation: Possibly. In the novel it's briefly mentioned that Pangle might be a relative of the Swanger's, but has been living alone in the woods for most of his life, and can't remember if he's part of the Swanger or Pangle family, with Stobrod deciding he has more of a Pangle look to him. This is cut from the movie, where instead of being a hermit Stobrod encountered, Pangle is apparently a fellow deserter.

* MomentKiller: In the film, when Ada and Inman are talking after they've reunited, and bringing up their past (including their NowOrNeverKiss), it looks like they're reconnecting - and then Ruby storms in on them, telling them they're being too loud, and too romantic, for her taste ("If y'all goin' to wimble-wimble with each other, I might as well sleep with him"). [[spoiler:Then it becomes a SubvertedTrop when Ada and Inman end up sleeping with each other a few minutes later anyway]].
