* HumansAreBastards: Seems to be a theme of the story. Even Wataru, who is ostensibly a good kid with good intentions who is never [[spoiler: consciously]] malicious, is implied to be not only cowardly and jealous but [[spoiler: subconsciously racist and even murderous]].

** Also, there's a minor race of talking birds called the Karulakin who are intelligent and work mainly as clerks.

* BadAss: Mitsuru looks like a GameBreaker if this was a real video game.

!!This book provides examples of:

** One absence does actually [[AdaptationExplanationExtrication remove an important plot element]], though: Wataru (the main character) and Mitsuru (TheRival) are both racing to reach the Tower of the Goddess and recieve a wish from her. In TheFilmOfTheBook, it's never explicitly explained why it's important who gets there first, or if it is. In the book, it's much more clear: [[spoiler: Whoever makes it last will be sacrificed to keep the land of Vision in existence.]]

* DeadLittleSister: [[spoiler: Mitsuru's motivation: "Look, Midori! I did it! I will bring you back to life!"]]

* LighterAndSofter: The movie as compared to the book. The movie is, for the most part, a cheerful fantasy romp with some NightmareFuel splashed in just to keep people on their toes. The book, on the other hand, is nothing short of '''grim,''' although it [[EarnYourHappyEnding ends well.]] [[BittersweetEnding Ish.]] The manga is lighter and softer as well (the mangaka even says in the author's notes that it turned out more humorous and fluffy than she'd expected).

A Japanese novel, which became a manga, which became a movie, which became a video game, which is naturally of a genre that the novel was designed around in the first place. Yes, it's complicated.

* FridgeBrilliance: When Wataru becomes a Highlander, he is told that the Highlander's Wyrmband will sear the skin of any wearer who strays from the path of justice. so why does it remain dormant when [[spoiler:Wataru murders the lookalikes of his father and Rikako Tanaka in the Swamp of Grief? Because the ways of Vision are defined by Wataru's heart and mind, and Wataru subconsciously believed that what he was doing was right at the time.]]

** The movie takes this and ramps it almost [[UptoEleven Up to Eleven]]. It's the main cause of all of the doujinshi floating around.

* [[spoiler: SparedByTheAdaptation: Mitsuru and Kutz in the movie. Although Mitsuru still died, [[IGotBetter he gets better.]]]]

* [[spoiler: VictoryGuidedAmnesia]]: It doesn't take effect immediately, but it is certainly implied that Wataru will eventually [[spoiler: forget all about Vision and his friends there]]. This isn't the case in the movie, however.
