Jason Thanou is an agent of the 24th century Temporal Regulatory Authority. He is called back from retirement to lead an expedition further back in time than anyone has ever gone, to the Santorini eruption in 1628 BC, the largest volcanic event in recorded history. He is accompanied by vulcanologist Dierdre Sadaka-Ramirez and historian Sydney Nagel, and they expect a mission as routine as time travel gets.
When they arrive, they are horrified to discover that the gods and heroes of the ancient world are real; the Earth is a battleground for two unspeakably ancient alien species, the humanoid Teloi and the amphibious Nagommo. The hostile Teloi discover their origins, and Jason and his companions must thwart them if humanity is ever to have a history to begin with.
