* At least some of Nancy's overall frustration with Fred and later Robin though she softens there once she realizes how cool she is seems to just come from missing her investigations and solving problems with Jonathan in the previous 3 seasons.

*** Mike's momentary fury at Hopper swiftly turns to grief over the lost time; Hopper's need to protect El by concealing her existence from the government is something he ''can'' understand, and it only takes him a matter of seconds to go from hitting Hopper to crying on his shoulder. Mike's pain, like his anger, is easier for Hopper to bear that it would be for El, and by comforting Mike before they rejoin the others, he's protecting her still.

His emotional intelligence and compassion for both kids in this scene makes [[BoyfriendBlockingDad his behavior toward Mike]] in the first part of Season 3 a little hard to swallow.
