* Thorin's slowly growing fondness for Legolas, which became genuine affection over the course of Legolas and Gimli's marriage, to the point where he worries about him after Gimli's death, walks every step of the way with him over Taniquetil, and ropes in every available aid to help guide him along the way. As he says, a little awkwardly, it was not just for Gimli's sake (even if he is a little startled when Legolas hugs him).

* By the time of the Paths of the Dead, Thorin has sufficiently thawed out towards Legolas that the two exchange cordial formal greetings, and Thorin actually acts as a ShipperOnDeck by bringing up the oath Legolas gave at Helm's Deep in order to wangle a LoveConfession.
* Later on, via the medium of Gimli, Thorin speaks to Aragorn as one King to another, telling him not to fear his ancestry and any weakness in his blood, but to simply rule as Aragorn, since Aragorn is enough. Aragorn is quite clearly deeply touched and rather grateful for this advice.

* As in canon, Galadriel's interaction with Gimli in Lothlorien. Her words are made slightly more significant than in the book because the readers know the history of Erebor and Smaug and the history of gold-sickness in the line of Durin. The shock of all the observing dead dwarves is both gratifying and a little heartbreaking, with the general vibe being, "she ''understands''". It also acts as a major turning point in Thorin's attitudes to elves, as he acknowledges that she offered Gimli welcome in a land of strangers, comforted him, rebuked her own lord in public for his sake, and gave him three strands of her hair when one had famously been denied to Fëanor.
