* In the very first chapter, when the death game is announced, Shirou explains that he's going to save as many people as he can. Ilya is disappointed that he's going to leave her. He says earnestly that there's no way he can do this alone, and he needs her help.
-->Ilya stared. Her face was slack and her gaze was amazed. Then, like a sunrise, she smiled. She leaned forward and slammed her shoulder into Shirou's belly, wrapping her arms around his waist in a fierce hug. She didn't say anything. It was unnecessary for her to agree or disagree when her endorsement was so clear. She simply hugged Emiya Shirou. Carefully, he patted her on the head with one hand, and dismissed the harassment query with the other.\\
With the world screaming around them, with people collapsing in despair, screaming in fear, and raging in fear, there was this one island of happiness, where Ilyasivel von Einzbern was hugging her oniichan, Emiya Shirou.

--> “Shirou.” Ilya said. She alone hadn’t turned to look, and was still looking down at the table, so he couldn’t see her face. She was tracing patterns on the table idly with a finger, kicking her feet as she didn’t meet his eyes. “It’s no good if you get yourself killed, right? So even if you get ripped to pieces, you absolutely can’t die, because we’ll be separated.”

* Kirito gets a quest to move Ellis Bell (Kayaba) to the newly opened 25th floor. Not only does Kayaba bring the NPC Agatha with him despite having no need to besides Kirito clearly being attached to her, he gives Kirito honest praise for his magecraft.
--> "Thanks." Kirito said, feeling himself blush a bit. It was really weird getting complemented for being a [Good Student] by an NPC. Kirito had done well in school, but even if his grades had a high number, they were in units of [Computer Otaku] instead of [Honor Student], so he wasn't used to praise.

** Don't forget that Illya is the only player in the game who knows that the "dead" aren't actually dying; it wouldn't be unreasonable for her to assume that Hexi will meet his friends again once the game is cleared. She does what she can to comfort him because she knows that, death aside, they have been forcibly separated with no guarantee of ever seeing each other again, and she feels for him.

* Shirou lives his dream of being a totally selfless hero who saves people as The Sixth Ranger, but rather than turning out like Archer, where the people he saves later curse him and fear him because they don't understand him (and he never adequately explains himself, if at all), Shirou eventually becomes famous and understood as someone who really does just want to save/help people to the point of obsession, and accept his eccentricities as the mark of a weird person, but not someone to be hated or feared. Furthermore, his stint as [[KnightInShiningArmor The Sixth Ranger]] ''did'' in fact save hundreds, if not thousands of lives at a time when people were in the most danger and most in need of help.

* When Ilya learns that Hexadecimal's friends were killed by the 5F Boss, she immediately drops everything, grabs him, Asuna, and Kirito, and then absolutely wrecks the boss. She even gives Hexadecimal the Last Attack. Only after the fight does she inform him of what happened to his friends.
** When she heard it, she thought about how Hexadecimal will be left behind, something she notes she can sympathize with.
** After telling Hexadecimal what happened, she tries to comfort him. She only doesn't because she is unsure of how to do so.

** Ilya, in her own awkward way, wants to know if her student Hexadecimal is okay, and has Shirou broach the subject for her, possibly knowing that she wouldn't be good at it.
** Shirou, unlike other people, don't tell Hexadecimal what he should do, instead trusting him to either handle it on his own, or ask help when he really wants and needs it. Hexadecimal appreciates how Shirou doesn't criticize him.
* Kuradeel is a Mid Liner who desperately wants to show that he is ready to be a Front Liner. He gets his wish when he is scouted by Ilya. Both this and receiving a CoolSword specially made for him by Shirou causes him to feel like he truly belongs for the first time since the start of the [Death Game].
