AlasPoorVillain indeed.

* In a moment of self-doubt, Matoro vents to Jaller that he feels like the weakest on the team. Jaller and Kongu were the leaders of their koro's defence forces; Nuparu is an amazing engineer; and Hewkii and Hahli were champion athletes. He, Matoro, was just a scholar, one constantly at a bit of a remove from his fellow Matoran due to knowing secrets no one else could. Jaller tells him that being a Toa isn't about powers or skills or physical toughness, it's about spirit.

* The scene at the end of ''Bionicle 2: Legends of Metru Nui'' where Vakama gives Turaga Lhikan's mask to Jaller, whose Matoran mask is broken, and then it molds to fit his face, is incredibly Heartwarming.

* The ending of ''Bionicle'' 3. Norik tells Vakama that the Matoran are now his responsibility. Instead of reacting with crippling self doubt as he would have in ''Bionicle'' 2, he simply reacts with a "well how 'bout that?" smile to himself, neatly accenting the CharacterDevelopment he's been through.

* Krika offering Gali a Tablet of Transit and telling her to just get out of Karda Nui. While part of this can be seen as PragmaticVillainy (he's trying to make sure Mata Nui is never awakened), it's heavily indicated that it's at least partially because [[WorthyOpponent he truly does respect Gali]] and wants to have at least one good thing on his record when he goes to his final accounting.

* In "Tales of the Masks," Kopaka believes Pohatu dead, and journeys to Po-Koro to pay tribute to his friend. As it turns out, Pohatu is very much alive, and when he sees him, Kopaka--cold, stoic, loner Kopaka--actually ''smiles.''

** That scene at the end is heartwarming and for another reason. It chronologically takes place after the events of ''Web of Shadows'' where the Toa lost their powers and began to doubt themselves. They spend the rest of the movie trying to recover their powers, aside from Vakama who takes his failures and the loss of his powers especially hard. They manage to save the Matoran and bring them to the island of Mata Nui, vowing to forever protect them. But they realize that they must now give up their powers which they worked so hard to recover. And Vakama, the one who was most distraught over the loss of his powers immediately gives them up to reawaken the Matoran and the rest of the Toa follow with no hesitation, showing their commitment to the Matoran.

* In ''Maze of Shadows,'' Matau is [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness acting unusually subdued]]. Nuju notices, and asks why. Matau replies that usually, being a Toa-hero has felt like a great big happy, fun adventure. But now, for the first time, he's seriously contemplating his own mortality. He might well die. Nuju replies that this is true, but there's something he's forgotten.

* Earlier in the book, we also learn why Mt. Ihu is so named--after a former mentor of Nuju's, who taught him that life is about the journey, not the destination. Nuju promises himself that if he ever forgets, he'll just look up at the mountain and remember.
