Even if they got married after the war and lived happily ever after, he would have inevitably died of old age by the mid-80's, forcing Diana to face the reality of loving a mortal. It would have made her selfish actions in the movie far more understandable if the loss was still fresh in her heart rather than spending 70 years in mourning.
