** He tried to find better jobs, but since he's TheChewToy and StatusQuoIsGod he always failed. A few jokes in episodes like "Married...With Prom Queen" referred to him trying (and failing) to pass the exam to become a garbageman. The episode "Tis Time To Smell The Roses" made this its entire plot, as Al had the chance to own his own sporting goods store. Naturally, [[TheMillstone Peg]] ruined it for him.

A few jokes in episodes like "Married...With Prom Queen" referred to him trying (and failing) to pass the exam to become a garbageman. He actually got other jobs, like as a topless bartender in "Al On The Rocks" or a school security guard in "All Night Security Dude", but he got fired. When Jefferson offered to get Al a job as a busboy at his country club, he [[HonorBeforeReason stupidly refused out of pride.]] The episode "Tis Time To Smell The Roses" made this its entire plot, as Al had the chance to own his own sporting goods store. * In a late season 2 parter, Peggy and Al split up for a week or so with Al moving completely out the house and Peggy got a new wealthy boyfriend. Did Peggy ever sleep with that guy? Considering how sex starved Peggy is, I can't imagine that she wouldn't. We've seen Al with the chance to sleep with other women and turn them down, but the same can't be said of Peggy.

** Aside from the Bundy's being literally cursed, Al is also just too beaten down by life to even conceive of that being possible. Al Bundy is suffering major Depression, and is just coasting on his life. It is tragic, really.

[[folder: Al's Job]]
* Why didn't Al at least attempt to find a better job? True, he lacked the skills to do anything besides retail, but with some effort he could have likely found a better store to work in. Perhaps something more suited to him, like a sporting goods store?

* Fun fact: If you look up the modern home values in the Chicago suburb where the Bundys are said to live, those houses are ''easily'' worth a half a million dollars in 2022, even assuming being neighbors with - y'know - would drag property values down. It's a 3-bedroom, (presumably) 1.5-bath home with a garage. I like to think eventually Al got on Zillow, and when he recovered from his heart attack he and Peg sold the house, didn't tell the kids, and rode off into the sunset together singing "I got you babe." ...Then maybe the house exploded due to a gas leak and took the D'arcys with it, possibly when Marcy lit a celebratory cigar.

Up To Eleven is a defunct trope

** Lots and lots and ''lots'' of credit card debt. It's a real problem for many Americans, so it's only natural that Peggy would take it UpToEleven. The episode "976-SHOE" opens with Officer Dan confiscating Peggy's credit card, while a later-season episode features Al trying to hold a "Bundy Financial Crisis Summit Meeting" with the "Bundy Big Box O' Bills". This is why Al threatens to put Bud and Kelly "in the will" as punishment, since they'll inherit all the debts he's built up.
