** The weird thing is that I only ever came across two of these: the one with the glowing eyes and the cracked mask face, and the one wearing a Lady Liberty head. And then they never show up again? It kinda feels like they're an enemy type that got cut at the last second, but these two were accidentally left in.

I think somebody higher on this page hypothesized that Elizabeth's Tears are used to shunt the [=ADAM=]-induced side effects off to an alternate universe counterpart.

**Another thing to note, is that New York doesn't have any military prescense (the exception being Fort Hamilton, though from what I've read it's not really a combat ready base) so, barring the NYPD (who, unless this timeline's version of Reagan decided to give them SAM Batteries, wouldn't have the capablties to counter Columbia's blimps), New York would be practically defenseless for the early stages of the attack. Most likely, what we see in the game is the early minutes of Columbia's attack. Keep in mind, during 9/11, the first fighters wouldn't be over New York until after the towers had collapsed. I'd say at this point, the US Air Force is still scrambling to organize a response to the attack. Whether they are succesful in repelling Columbia or not, we can't say-we never see that. The point is, eventually, the militay will get it's shit together and respond.

* Why are there Vigors in 1959's Rapture? If they were Plasmids in any other thing except name I'd understand, but they are not only most of the same Vigors you find in Columbia (including "Shock Jockey" instead of Electro Bolt) and they make people crazy, but they are not injected. (INB4 they are using the ''VideoGame/BioShockInfinite'' engine. I'm sure they could have tweaked it a bit if they really meant to.)

*** It's also possible Booker's memory of his wife's appearance is one of the things locked behind the nursery door, so to speak. Annabelle DeWitt probably died young and would very, ''very'' likely not be down with Booker selling Elizabeth, and his guilt, grief and trauma related to her death would probably play into the Tear amnesia he gets.

** It's possible they want the money for themselves and it's a spontaneous group (attempt at) mugging.

Rapture being fine with plasmids makes sense as self-improvement and body modification fits better with objectivist views but Columbia is inhabited by hyper-militant fundamentalist christians. Changing your body (as it would be seen as altering God's work) and what are basically magic powers would most certainly not be fine with that crowd. It mostly feels like they added it in just so the gameplay wouldn't be too different from the previous games.

** Columbia isn't strictly a fundamentalist Christian theocracy so much as a cult of personality around Comstock. He's definitely happy to use the trappings of Judeo-Christian theology--the lamb and the shepherd, Bible quotations, "the Lord judges, I act"--but it's ultimately to make ''himself'' look better; look around in Columbia and you'll notice there's no crosses, no Jesus, no saints or Biblical figures, only one church if you count the weird baptism reception hall. Any Christian fundamentalism in Columbia has been so mashed up into American jingoism and Comstock's deification that at this point, if Comstock says vigors are good, vigors are good.

Also, Annabelle has been dead for 19 years, he's been drunk a lot, apparent Elizabeth also looks sorta similar to Lady Comstock, and therefore Annabelle... Also hard to recognize someone you haven't seen in 19 years, just from a statue or a painting?

** A generally missed detail is in the book "Mind in Revolt" which was released as an add-on to the base game years ago. In it, scientist Francis Pinchot interviews Daisy Fitzroy at Comstock House to find out how to "cleanse sin from the body", which he deems can be done through mental evaluation and Phrenology. However, by the end of the book he's horrified that only way to clean the body of sin is through surgical experiments meant to torture dissenters into submission. Unfortunately he doesn't manage to stop such tortures from happening, and his research is unfortunately used to turn Comstock House into a mental asylum / "rehabilitation centre" by the time Elizabeth rises to power.

** Additionally, Coloumbia in the alternative 80s timeline probably ends up looking more like rapture, where large parts of the city are falling apart and the vast majority of its citizens are either insane spliced up crazies or are subject to Elizabeth's brainwashing. Notable that Slate says that the future of Coloumbia is "Tin Men", which if you take into account the premise of the [[BadFuture]] then it's almost like he knew.

** Answering the original question and disregarding the entire comment war, It's entirely possible that Coloumbia is delusional in believing that they can cleanse "The Sodom Below", whereas the rest of the world looks through it and swiftly destroys the city after it's short rampage against New York. Bear in mind that many authoritarian dictatorships tend to project their power massively but are ultimately powerless against the might of a superpower. I suspect that alot of Coloumbia by the 80s is a festering cult of extremism and decay, considering Comstock House looks like it's been dilapidated for decades. Even Elizabeth knows this (as she says the "Lunatics" are running the Asylum, but it's far too late for her at this point, which is why she sends Booker for *their* sake.

** Considering it is set on the edwardian period, and the fashion at the time; a corset wasnt considered underwear per se, but something like a chemise or a panier would be. It also depended on the social and economic class, since not all the women could afford a corset. The problem is that most edwardian corsets, specially the s bend type that Elizabeth seems to wear, used to be low on the bust, to have that pigeon like figure, and that's why they wore chemises under them. But Elizabeth doesn't wear it like that. Seems weird, considering Rosalind apparently uses the historically accurate clothing, but Elizabeth doesnt, and they actually depicted her wearing correct clothing on the photos on Monument Island. Besides that, most people on Columbia by that point of the game are practically running away from Columbia, and we actually see one complaining about having to leave their belongings, so they probably assumed Elizabeth was running as well, or were too preocuppied to pay attention. On the First Lady ship subject, most museums don't tend to have complete ensembles of clothes, and if they have, they are replicas, so the ship probably only had the skirt and the top part. Making Elizabeth ditch her blouse and skirt, and change them. But then again, is a videogame about a floating city, so don't expect too much realism from it.

** You could say the same thing about any attempt to change the future, one way or the other, because different people are going to be born than in another timeline. At the same time as you're erasing all the people who only exist because of Columbia, you're allowing the existence of all the people who are only born because Columbia never existed. Booker and Elizabeth were more interested in preventing the city from ''waging apocalyptic war on the surface'' than they were in counting which people get born in the new timeline versus the old one.

We only see a few universes, and there could very well be millions of tiny differences that aren't big enough to matter. There are probably plenty of universes where Comstock funds Robert's research instead of Rosalind's, but it matters little, since the two both end up in Columbia eventually, and all the Comstocks get erased in the end.

** He actually doesn't remember. Shortly after you meet Elizabeth for the first time, she asks Booker if he's married. He says he was, but his wife died in childbirth, and when Elizabeth asks if he has a child, he simply says "No." As Rosalind Lutece says in the epigram that begins the game, a person who's brought into an alternate timeline will automatically begin to fashion a set of alternate memories to accommodate the conflict. As far as Booker's concerned, he's a childless, widowed war veteran and ex-Pinkerton who's come to Columbia to discharge a gambling debt by finding a girl. Any time someone tells him things are otherwise, he gets a nosebleed and insists that what he remembers is the gospel truth. It takes Elizabeth at full power to break the conditioning and force him to admit what the truth of the matter really is. The Luteces could tell him the real story until they were blue in the face but it wouldn't do any good.

Added DiffLines:

** Hmm, to give my own two cents, I recall a novel with a character who has a similar ability (name escapes me however). In the novel, it’s explained that multiple timelines are not parallel, they spread out like a web and often cross over each other. Thus, the Tears are points where two timelines intersect. Hence, people who have crossed into alternate timelines can perceive them, and Elizabeth, since part of her exists in the ‘hub’ between timelines, can manipulate and pull items/information from one timeline into another.

Added DiffLines:

** Maybe both explanations are correct? When Booker or another Columbian uses a Shock Jockey Vigor, they’re ‘overlaying’ their arm with that of another version of themself with an Electro Bolt Plasmid. This may have been the solution Fink devised; no need to procure ADAM or risk nasty mutations/addictions; simply shunt the biological manipulations and crippling side effects to another universe and reap the benefits for your own.
