Is this because she is still, unsurprisingly, traumatised? It seems too much to hope for that she would never have to suffer any more contact with her would-have-been rapist, the best friend of her husband who is gleefully talking of "one house, one mutual happiness" without concern for how ''she'' feels about this arrangement. In addition, Proteus never actually apologised for trying to force himself on her - only for betraying Valentine's trust.
