Complete nobodies that have the potential to be one are raised to be a ChildSoldier, fight impurities and perpetuate a war that's been going on for a thousand years. As the story progresses, numerous characters also die violently and pointlessly, and the survivors are all wracked with immense grief -- because for the most part, many of them are the younger generation, not yet used to such sorrow. And this has happened repeatedly, continuously, for generations upon generations, albeit nowhere near as fiercely as the story's present.
