Grumpy Bear is no longer a trope

* Why do Mirror and Sol hang out so often when it's clear Mirror doesn't like Sol? Mirror is part changeling, and so would feed on love; Sol is part windigo, and so would feed on hatred. So Mirror would get a good supply of positive feelings from [[{{Keet}} Sol]], who would get a good amount of negative feelings from [[GrumpyBear Mirror]]. It's less liking each other and more just tolerating for the sake of mutual benefit.

* The intro to the final episode of Minecraft Hardcore season 2 features the song [[WebAnimation/{{RWBY}} "Bad Luck Charm"]]. With his SurvivorGuilt and TheAtoner tendencies as the series went on, it suddenly becomes clear that the song is (in this case) talking about Max.
** Also, the lyrics when each death is shown line up rather well with the death themselves:
*** "Pain; is your reward for being near me" -Endorb's death, which was stated earlier to be extra painful if it happened due to him being a newcomer to the channel.
*** "Fate; won't be your friend when I'm around" -Rhino's death, which was caused by a fateful glitch the players had no real control over.
*** "Blame; me for the tragedies that follow" -Tim's death, which Jero vehemently blamed Max for.
*** "Grave; the situations that surround" -Peter's death, which happened due to him throwing himself into a gravely dangerous situation rather than backing off.

to:

* Throughout Minecraft Hardcore season 2, Max had SurvivorGuilt due to feeling he caused the deaths of Endorb, Rhino, and Tim. In the final episode, Jero accidentally shot Max, which directly led to his death. [[HereWeGoAgain And Jero sounds pretty guilty about it afterwards...]]

* Max doesn't do well using characters or weapons that are DifficultButAwesome, but also hates BoringButPractical. The former is because Max rarely does well under pressure, and so likely wouldn't remember all the complex properties of his abilities or weapons. The latter is because Max used to always be the only person recording (and even nowadays is sometimes the only one doing so) and he didn't want the audience's experience to be dull; over time it just became ingrained in him that he disliked those roles.
** The last part above also explains why, despite his surprising skill with sniping (see ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaTwilightPrincess'', ''VideoGame/{{Minecraft}}'', and after a time, ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaBreathOfTheWild''), he avoids it when possible; doing sniping yourself is an exercise in patience, caution, and timing, but when you're watching it it's a lot more boring.
* Max's biggest criticisms in games tend to be of plotholes or bad dialogue. His main focus when being a DungeonMaster is the story and narrative. He's quick to think of wordplays and puns. His [[DeadpanSnarker snarkiness]] often comes with a helping of SophisticatedAsHell. And he's good at noticing suspicious things in text or speech, [[GenreSavvy which he keeps in mind as]] {{foreshadowing}}. All seems a bit random; then you remember that Max's biggest and most consistent hobby, outside of making videos and playing games, is ''writing.''

* Max is anywhere from unnerved to scared of: water, space, darkness, underground/caves, things he can't make out from a distance, and [[OverlyNarrowSuperlative wide-open areas where he's not entirely convinced everything has loaded in]]. He doesn't have a bunch of specific fears; he's just [[PrimalFear afraid of the unknown]]![[labelnote:*]]Though it's worth noting that some aspects of his aquaphobia are unrelated to the "unknown" part of it.[[/labelnote]]
* Max and Rhino are good friends, yet constantly argue. Max likes to improvise and take risks for quick progress, while Rhino tries to plan everything out and go carefully for safe progress. Naturally, when both try to lead one another, or work together at all, these contrast.

* When Max goes to [[VideoGame/PokemonSunAndMoon Ten Carat Hill]] to catch a Rockruff, he's noticeably unnerved and mentions being on edge. Ten Carat Hill, in the postgame, is where you find [[spoiler:[[EldritchAbomination Necrozma]]]], and it's implied that it's still there even before you can encounter it, you just don't run into it. Obviously wasn't the idea, but it's fitting.
** He also mentions the area making him think a [[VideoGame/{{Pikmin}} Burrowing Snagret]] is going to pop out at him, which at first sounds like a bit of snark, but think about it. Ten Carat Hill's meadow is a pathway leading to a large circular area (though also has not-immediately-visible paths and grasses branching off to the side). It genuinely looks like a boss arena at first with said boss absent, and ''Pikmin'' is a game series known for having no buildup to boss battles, just tossing them at you often with a JumpScare as they either pop out of the ground or fall from the sky. Jumpscares are one of Max's biggest fears; no wonder he felt so on edge!

%%Let's be careful about what we put here. The personal lives of Max, and even the others on the channel, are not ours to speculate about, especially if it's related to troubles in their lives.

** Actually, conversation implies they're agents working for Princess Celestia, so they're forced to work together.

* With the exceptions of Peter[[labelnote:*]]they'd known each other for years due to attending the same drama class as kids[[/labelnote]], Schuyler[[labelnote:*]]they're brothers[[/labelnote]], and Marioman2233[[labelnote:*]]it's unknown how they met, but it was before Max started watching the show[[/labelnote]], Max met everyone in his videos through ''WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic'', directly or indirectly. Friendship truly is magic.

* Max being [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold kind of a dick]] and quick to argue, as well as a bit of a violent personality, makes sense when you take into account him saying that the high school he went to was pretty much entirely full of assholes and he got into fights on occasion. Especially since these traits didn't start showing up until mid-2014, when he was in his second-to-last year.

to:

* Not only is Max typically the DungeonMaster for the group's ''Courage is Magic'' sessions, he makes up literally everything on the spot outside of a very basic outline. He took improv classes for years and has been let's playing for about half a decade; his mental reaction time is amazingly swift as a result, so of course he can create the pieces of his campaign as it goes along rather than beforehand.
** He's also TheWorkaholic and might not have time to prepare a full series of quests, so he does it live.

* Max has lately been dipping into AxCrazy territory with his commentary and playing style. Normally PlayedForLaughs, but there are also some posts he's made on sites such as Tumblr or Ask where he talks about some violent things he's done. He also outright says in the 2014 Christmas Special that he is "legitimately insane" and it gets passed off as a joke. What if it's all a CassandraTruth, and he really ''is'' psychotic?
** Pretty much confirmed to be a joke, or at least character exaggeration. While Max has gotten into some dangerous situations in real life, it's still obvious he has everything under control.
* It's been noticed that Max TookALevelInJerkass starting sometime in 2014, near the middle of the year, being [[HairTriggerTemper much more irritable]] and [[WithFriendsLikeThese lashing out at others a lot more]]. It was also around this time when he started getting an influx of people [[FanDumb badgering him]] to make more ''Cutie Mark Laboratories'' as opposed to his let's plays, ranging from simply asking when the next episode is on his gaming videos, to outright posting self-entitled demanding comments ordering him to stop making let's plays and focus only on ''Cutie Mark Laboratories''. This has proven to be a major BerserkButton for Max, but he has only ever responded with TranquilFury replies to comments such as these. It's very likely that all that stress is causing him to be of much shorter temper when recording, and thus let off steam bit by bit by unfairly taking it out on the others. Which is bad enough, but... well, [[RageBreakingPoint we all know what happens to someone who holds all that stress in for too long.]]
** In fact, forget him possibly losing it in an outrage; it's been mentioned that ''VisualNovel/PartTimeJob'' made his heart stop, and laughing too much in an offscreen game of ''Drawful'' had a similar effect. This could mean he has a weak heart or some sort of condition, and that much stress ''is not helping.''
** Relieved by his temper quelling a fair amount recently. He can be heard doing breathing exercises when particularly annoyed, and he's put ''Cutie Mark Laboratories'' on hold to focus on ''Not Completely Equine'', which has definitely been helping.

* Max's let's plays of visual novel games seem to be more popular than those of other games; in fact, the first part of ''My Little Investigations'' is his most-viewed LetsPlay video at the time of writing this. This makes sense when you realize that, in a visual novel, Max is unable to [[EpicFail screw things up]] (which is hit-or-miss with fans either finding it annoying or funny) and can instead only [[DeadpanSnarker make sarcastic comments about events]] (which is pretty much ''always'' entertaining).
** He's even stated that visual novels are among his favorite genres of games.
* According to WordOfGod, Max's song ''Ice Cold'' is his favourite of the songs he's made. Considering that lately, when playing ''Minecraft'' adventure maps with [[{{LetsPlay/Zerosaga1}} Zero]], he's been referring to himself as being part [[Recap/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagicS2E13HearthsWarmingEve Windigo]], this is fitting. Also a bit of HilariousInHindsight given that the song was made long before he began referring to himself as such.
** Similarly, Max is part Windigo and lives in [[{{UsefulNotes/Canada}} Canada]] [[note]]Canada is often stereotyped as being cold and having very long winters[[/note]]. Zero is part dragon and lives in [[{{UsefulNotes/Florida}} Florida]] [[note]]Florida, in contrast, is often referred to as being very hot[[/note]].
*** Zero has actually said he's not part dragon, but rather part changeling with some dragon characteristics. Still, applies.
** There's also Max's love of Snowdrop...he seems to really like ice, snow, or cold-related things.
* During 2013, Max had been slipping into a [[WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic Discord]] voice rather frequently. Makes sense judging by the at-the-time planned series ''Doctor Whooves: Chaotic Companionship'', where he was ''playing'' Discord - he was practicing his voice.
* Max plays as the Berserker in ''Borderlands'', likely so he can properly use the [[LeeroyJenkins playing style]] that led to his constant failures in ''Left 4 Dead 2''.
** And in ''Borderlands 2'', he plays the Gunzerker, who plays relatively differently but has a similar name; it's likely Max chose him expecting it to be similar to the Berserker.

to:

* Max loves games such as ''VideoGame/StardewValley'' and romantic visual novels, which are primarily meant for immersion, and he always "roleplays" in games like ''Fallout 3'' by choosing actions and dialogue that best fits him instead of goofing around. Yet when doing the ''Undertale'' genocide run, which is specifically made to [[WhatTheHellHero make you feel bad for killing these characters]], he shows no negative reactions and has mentioned on Twitter that "it's just a game". It probably lost its appeal to him since he had to play the game twice (because he couldn't get the True Pacifist run chained off his Neutral one due to killing some monsters), so the immersion was broken and he just saw genocide as a way to wrap it up.

* In ''Ohai, I'm [=SAWme=] Guy'', Max is forced to kill Snowdrop to progress. Back in New Letropolis, there's a ShrineToTheFallen for her. At the end of the episode where he and Chaz built roads (and where the shrine is first shown), Max silently visits the grave, leaves a rose, and goes back home. If ''Ohai, I'm [=SAWme=] Guy'' takes place in the New Letropolis-verse, then Max is guilt-ridden because he killed her, hence the shrine.

* Max's first let's play was ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaOcarinaOfTime'' back when he was twelve to thirteen years old; as such, he was childish, bad at jokes, bad at gameplay, rambled on, and everything was of much lower production quality. Almost a full five years later, he started playing ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaTwilightPrincess''. Due to developing his personality over those years, he's now snarky, competent, is quieter when need be, and everything is of much higher quality. ''Twilight Princess'' comes after (though not immediately after) ''Ocarina of Time'' in the Zelda timeline. [[spoiler: Max has literally become Future Max.]]

* In recent times, Max has been slipping into a [[WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic Discord]] voice rather frequently. Makes sense judging by the upcoming series ''Doctor Whooves: Chaotic Companionship'', where he's ''playing'' Discord - he's practicing his voice.

** Similarly, Max is part Windigo and lives in [[{{UsefulNotes/Canada}} Canada]] [[hottip:*: Canada is often stereotyped as being cold and having very long winters]]. Zero is part dragon and lives in [[{{UsefulNotes/Florida}} Florida]] [[hottip:*: Florida, in contrast, is often referred to as being very hot]].

* Apparently, it was Schuyler's idea to do the ''New Super Mario Bros. Wii'' let's play...so why does he always seem like he doesn't want to be there in recording?
