If it weren't a duet, it would be about one person who's complaining that the other one has left them. But because it's sung throughout in the most consonant possible musical intervals that you can sing a duet in (parallel thirds, occasionally going to a perfect fourth with the upper voice on the tonic, so it's really an inverted perfect fifth), the implication is that these two are made for each other and all they have to do is get together again and it'll be fine.
