The ''Double Dragon'' franchise started in 1987 with the original ''VideoGame/DoubleDragon'' arcade game, essentially kick-starting the BeatEmUp genre. In it, the Lee brothers (Billy and Jimmy) have to rescue a girl named Marian from some gangsters. Many sequels and ports for other consoles came later, eventually dying down.

In this short period, several other versions of the story came about in various formats. An [[WesternAnimation/DoubleDragon animated series]] aired in 1993 and 1994, while an InNameOnly [[Film/DoubleDragon feature film]] was released in 1994. A comic series also existed, wherein the brothers' dad was Creator/StanLee. [[ContinuitySnarl Need we say more?]]
