* Kingpin serves this role to the main characters in ''WesternAnimation/SpiderManIntoTheSpiderVerse''. The Spider-People all lost someone, but took responsibility for their role in the deaths and became heroes who fought to prevent it happening to others. Kingpin lost his wife and child, blamed Spider-Man, and is willing to hurt anyone it takes in order to get his family back.
* Franchise/MarvelCinematicUniverse:
** The heart of much of the humor and drama in ''Film/{{The Avengers|2012}}'' is the [[BirdsOfAFeather similarities]] and [[OppositesAttract differences]] of the leads.
*** Steve Rogers vs. Tony Stark: Both are tied to Howard Stark and motivated by a sense of American patriotism and to bring peace. But where Steve is idealistic, sweet-natured, well-mannered and uses his intelligence to defeat his enemies, Tony is cynical, snarkish, rude and rushes in to fight.
*** Bruce Banner vs. Tony Stark: Both are genius scientists with genuine respect for each other. They both have a dark side, but they have different personalities. Bruce is mild and cautious to control his id while Tony's flamboyance and irresponsibility are the tip of his self-destructive behavior.
*** Steve Rogers vs. Thor: Both are old-fashioned in ideals and aesthetics, initially unease on modern Earth and are driven with a sense of duty for their homeland.
*** Doctor Stephen Strange vs Tony Stark: Both start out as being [[ItsAllAboutMe self-centered]], reckless men who care about pleasure and success until a life-changing accident [[BreakTheHaughty brings them down a few pegs]]. The difference is Tony (as Iron Man) uses [[ScienceHero technology]] while Strange uses {{Magic}}. Additionally, Stark gets the chance to stroke his own ego for good by becoming a beloved superhero, while Strange learns humility by fighting battles kept away from the public eye.
*** Loki himself has traits that resonate or clash with each of the Avengers. He's from Asgard and of royalty (Thor). He's clever and loves theatrics (Tony). He manipulates emotions (Bruce). He blatantly disregards human life and freedom (Steve). He lacks empathy (Black Widow) and disregards free will (Hawkeye).
** In ''Film/{{Guardians of the Galaxy|2014}}'', Yondu Udonta serves as a foil to Thanos on a personal level. Both have a fearsome reputation, and "adopt" alien children and raise them to serve their own agendas (Peter as a Ravager and Gamora/Nebula as Thanos's personal muscle) and eventually their adopted kids betray both of them. However, Yondu genuinely cares about Peter, while Thanos abuses Gamora and Nebula. Most importantly [[spoiler:Yondu sacrifices himself to save Peter while Thanos sacrifices Gamora for his own gains]].
** In ''Film/AntMan1'', Scott and Hank. Hank is a respected scientist, an experienced hero, and a widower with a poor relationship with his daughter. Scott is a rookie hero, has a criminal record, and is a divorced man but has an excellent relationship with his daughter.
** In ''Film/CaptainAmericaCivilWar'', both Peter Parker and T'Challa are independent superheroes who side with Tony Stark in apprehending Steve and Bucky. However, Peter [[MotorMouth regularly makes quips]], [[PrimaryColorChampion wears a red and blue costume]], worships the Avengers, comes from a relatively poor background and joins Tony out of a desire for adventure. In contrast, T'Challa [[TheStoic hardly expresses himself]], [[MovieSuperheroesWearBlack wears a black and silver suit]], distrusts the Avengers, was born into a wealthy royal family and joins Tony to avenge the death of his father.
** ''Film/{{Black Panther|2018}}''
*** Nakia and Killmonger. Both make the argument that Wakanda should use its power and resources to improve the lives of black people everywhere. However, Nakia actually ''believes it'', while Killmonger is the BigBad because he's mostly using his stated agenda as an excuse to grab power and get some payback on the world that hurt him.
*** Nakia and Okoye. Both are {{Action Girl}}s who accompany T'Challa and offer advice on Wakanda's role for the future. However, Nakia is a spy who wants to open up Wakanda to help oppressed black people around the world while Okoye is a bodyguard who believes Wakanda should look after its traditions and people first and foremost. They even have different fighting styles with Nakia [[CombatPragmatist using guns, ring blades, her high heels, and anything she can her hands on]], while Okoye prefers using only the traditional Vibranium spear.
* ''Film/XMenFilmSeries'':
** ''Film/XMenFirstClass'':
*** Shaw serves as one to Xavier. Both are doctors of genetics who are interested in maximizing Lehnsherr's potential, but whereas Sebastian uses torture to uncover his raw power, Charles utilizes emotional intimacy to give Erik greater control. Erik grows to love Charles as a brother, but vehemently opposes the latter's peaceful approach to human-mutant relations. Magneto wholly embraces Shaw's mutant supremacist views, but loathes the man for murdering his mother.
*** Charles and Erik are juxtaposed in their respective Oxford pub and Argentinian bar scenes. The inebriated Xavier is the life of a party when he and his fellow graduate students celebrate the successful defense of his [=PhD=] thesis, and he later tries to flirt with Agent [=MacTaggert=]. The sober Lehnsherr is all business when he's hunting down Nazis, and he murders three men (including the bartender) in cold blood after taunting his prey.
---->'''Creator/BryanSinger''': Ultimately, they come from different places. Erik Lehnsherr is a victim of the Holocaust, he probably left the war with nothing, and is very much a solitary man, while Xavier had a life of privilege, became a professor at Oxford, was surrounded by peers, has an intimate relationship with Mystique since childhood, so he's quite loved, and therefore quite idealistic, less embittered, and just has a very different view from Lehnsherr.
** ''Film/XMenDaysOfFuturePast'':
*** Both past and future Magneto contrast each other in the film. 1973 Magneto [[spoiler:continues to move forward with mutant supremacy by attacking Xavier and his group]], while 2023 Magneto is fighting to protect both mankind and mutants while lamenting his pointless struggles with Charles in their younger years. Past Erik is very much on his own, but his elderly counterpart is a valuable team member.
*** Past Magneto and Past Xavier were both inactive and isolated in between 1963 and 1973 (the former due to imprisonment, the latter due to depression). Erik shows signs of wanting to repair some of their previous friendship, but a bitter Charles isn't interested for the most part. Magneto tries to [[spoiler:kill Mystique]] while Xavier tries to protect her. Hank remains unwaveringly devoted to Charles, but Erik [[spoiler:loses Mystique's loyalty after the murder attempt]]. In ''Film/XMenFirstClass'', Erik personified "rage" while Charles embodied "serenity," but their roles are reversed in 1973. Xavier is now the one who is full of pain and anger, and therefore has great trouble wielding his telepathy, whereas Magneto is (relatively) calm and controlled, still possessing great mastery over his power despite being deprived of metal for a decade. (We even see Erik adopt a meditation pose in his prison cell, which makes him appear almost Zen-like.)
*** Wolverine and the younger Magneto are violent individuals who love Xavier, but whereas JerkWithAHeartOfGold Logan possesses UndyingLoyalty towards Charles, JerkWithAHeartOfJerk Erik is quick to [[spoiler:[[ChronicBackstabbingDisorder betray]] him]].
** ''Film/XMenApocalypse'': Has its [[index]] [[Foil/XMenApocalypse own page]]. [[/index]]
** ''Film/Deadpool2016'':
*** Deadpool to Ajax, in terms of powers. Whereas Deadpool has a HealingFactor that is capable of regenerating [[AnArmAndALeg severed hands]], he is capable of feeling the pain of every blow he takes. Ajax, on the other hand, FeelsNoPain, and can take as many hits as Deadpool, but these injuries heal at an average pace, and will eventually burn out his body.
*** Colossus to Deadpool. Chaste-mouthed, paragon-like, gentle giant, boy scout X-Man contrasted to Deadpool's foul-mouthed, sardonic, violent, psychotic freelancer.
---->'''Colossus:''' We can't allow this, Deadpool. Please... come quietly.\\
'''Deadpool:''' You big, chrome cock-gobbler!\\

* ''Series/WandaVision'': Both the main villains of the final episode are foils to Wanda and Vision, respectively. The two characters wind up fighting their counterparts:
** [[spoiler:Agatha Harkness]] is Wanda with a lot more experience mastering her powers, none of her morals or concern for other people, and if instead of leaning on the Avengers and Vision, she'd pushed them away (or in [[spoiler:Agatha's]] case, literally cannibalised them for more power).
** [[spoiler:White Vision,]] unlike Vision, is totally emotionless and mechanical, and is willing to kill anyone if ordered to. Ultimately, Vision defeats him by pointing out how similar they are, and offering to share his memories (which make up the difference). Tyler Hayward, acting director of [=SWORD=] and [[spoiler:White Vision's]] creator, also serves as a contrast to Vision: despite being human, [[JustAMachine and considering Vision an object,]] [[HateSink he's a lot less empathetic and a lot more casually cruel.]]

** Anya Corazon serves as one to Gwen Stacy. Compared to Gwen, who becomes more open hearted, and is more of herself out the costume than in it (on top of being more emotionally vulnerable), she tends to be more cynical, has some skewed priorities, yet is also shown to be more level headed when it comes to heroics, with her ego downplayed.
** Gwen Stacy to Anya Corazon. While Anya has some skewed priorities and is more more comfortable with heroics, Gwen is the opposite. She's very altruistic when out of costume, but when it comes to major tragedies and being in costume, she shows more emotional vulnerability.
** Harry-Goblin is one to Spider-Man. While Spider-Man relies on spider strength, the Hobgoblin replies on an arsenal of weapons. Both make their own respective tech, however, Spider-Man has limited resources while the Hobgoblin has Oscorp's limitless resources to the point of mass-production for the Goblin Nation.
** Goblin Nation to the Spider-Team. While the Spider-Team relies on spider strength, the Goblin Nation replies on an arsenal of weapons.
* ''WesternAnimation/SpiderManTheAnimatedSeries''
** Anna Watson to J. Jonah Jameson, while the former distrusts Spider-Man, Anna dislikes Peter. Also, while Jameson has a love-hate relationship with Peter, Anna doesn't regard Spider-Man in anyway.
** Terri Lee gets one of these in the episode "The Man Without Fear" in the form of Susan Choi, her EvilCounterpart who worked with Richard Fisk and The Kingpin in a plot to frame Peter Parker. Both are members of government run institutions who hold a position of authority, and they initially worked together to arrest Peter when it was believed he was guilty. However, Lee takes the need to gather all the evidence and perspectives of a situation first before rash action very seriously, and ends up confronting Choi over her decision to hunt Peter before finding anything else out. Of course, Choi's reason for hunting Parker without searching for more information is obvious, as she's really a plant working for Fiske. Also, while Choi just loved pushing Lee around verbally and brushing her off, when it came to a physical altercation, Lee made short work of Choi.
** The KnightTemplar Green Goblin persona is a foil to both Norman (whose desires it embodies) and the Hobgoblin, who cares only about himself.
** Alisa Silver/Alisa Silvermane to Felicia Hardy. Both are love interests to Peter who are the daughters of criminals. However, they diverge in a few ways. Felicia's father disappeared when she was a child and she never knew he was a criminal until she was an adult; Alisa was raised by her father as DaddysLittleVillain. Whereas Alisa aided her father's crimes knowingly and willingly, Felicia was only a crook because of Kingpin holding her father hostage and ceased being his lackey once her father was out of danger. Alisa was attracted to [[LovesMyAlterEgo Peter Parker but despised Spider-Man]]; Felicia was attracted to both Peter and Spider-Man, though the latter more than the former.
** Alisa Silver/Alisa Silvermane can also be viewed as one to Vanessa Fisk. Both are [[MoralityPet morality pets]] to otherwise ruthless crime lords, with Alisa being Silvermane's daughter while Vanessa is Kingpin's wife. However, while Alisa is loyal to her father and aids in his career of crime, Vanessa wants Kingpin to abandon his life of crime. Vanessa ultimately leaves Kingpin after his feud with Silverman puts her in danger while Alisa remains loyal to her father. That Alisa basically looks like a younger version of Vanessa without the skunk stripe is probably not a coincidence.
* ''[[WesternAnimation/UltimateSpiderMan2012 Ultimate Spider-Man]]''
** Flash Thompson/Agent Venom to Venom/The Patrioteer/Anti-Venom/Harry Osborn.
*** Though they rarely interact, he is in fact a {{Foil}} to Harry, especially regarding their relationships to Peter. Whereas Harry and Peter are friends, Flash has bullied Peter throughout most of their adolescent lives. On the flip-side, Harry manifests a grudge against Spider-Man[[note]]partly because he uses Spider-Man as a scapegoat for his own problems[[/note]] while Flash considers himself Spidey's biggest fan. When Flash becomes more amicable towards Peter, Harry becomes more distant (though they do patch things up before long). They're even {{Foil}}s ''financially''! Harry is rich, but humble enough not to flaunt it[[note]]limousine rides and a random "richboy" party aside[[/note]], whilst Flash is extremely [[MilesGloriosus boastful]] to hide the fact that he's dirt poor. [[ActingForTwo They even share voice actors]]!
*** [[spoiler:Unlike Harry, Flash is able to maintain complete control of the symbiote, and successfully become a hero with it.]]
** Scarlet Spider is a mirror image of Spidey, with the same powers (mostly), a dark version of his origin (and his costume), considering himself to be a monster and a freak, isolating himself from others in a fashion not unlike Spidey prior to the series beginning, he doesn't have much of a sense of humour and relatively speaking, he is TheQuietOne, who would much prefer to fight than talk.
** Scorpion to Iron Fist. Both are skilled martial artists, but where Danny is kind, humble, and has a sense of honor, Scorpion is an arrogant, self-centered blowhard who cares only for himself and will gladly fight dirty to get what he wants. He's a dark reflection of what Danny would be if he let himself be controlled by his pride.
** Deadpool/Wade Wilson to good-ol' friendly neighborhood Spidey. We crack jokes (a lot), [[BreakingTheFourthWall talk to you guys]], and have ''very'' similar costumes. But I'm a merc (with a mouth) who's got almost '''no''' moral compass while Spidey's a superhero who knows [[ComesGreatResponsibility responsibility]]. ** This is highlighted in the ''ComicBook/CivilWar'' event, where the two crossed over for the first time. While both were opposed to the [[SuperRegistrationAct Superhuman Registration Act]], they entered and ended the war in different ways. The Young Avengers, based in New York, were in the epicenter of the conflict and were acutely aware of the act from the beginning, and in fact were captured by S.H.I.E.L.D. while fighting against it, but rescued by ComicBook/CaptainAmerica and recruited into the Secret Avengers. Whereas the Runaways, based in Los Angeles, had comparatively few superhumans and were far away from the resistance, unable to make their presence felt, and it was only when S.H.I.E.L.D. were deployed to LA to capture west coast superhumans did they take action. Upon meeting each other, it was a rocky start as the Young Avengers wanted to help and recruit the other to the Anti-Reg side, but the Runaways distrusted them, leading to a clash of egos (the Runaways weren't exactly fond of the Young Avengers beforehand, either). In the end, they were able to work together and parted on amicable terms. However, the Runaways decided they wanted no part in the conflict afterwards and became neutral, whereas the Young Avengers stayed as part of the war until the very end.

* ComicBook/CarolDanvers aka Ms Marvel/Captain Marvel and ComicBook/{{Rogue}} are this generally along with HeadbuttingHeroes. Carol is from Boston and straight-laced, Rogue is from Mississippi and wild. Carol is primarily coloured and blonde, Rogue is green coloured and brunette. Carol has traditionally heroic powers that thanks to a retcon are natural while Rogue has a power that’s associated with villains stealing abilities from other people. Carol is abrasive and bold, Rogue besides some sass is more troubled and atoning. Ironically in modern comics their traits are swapped around, Rogue is generally long haired, sweet and unambiguously heroic like Carol usually is while Carol (especially in ''ComicBook/CivilWarII'') is short haired, butch and more flawed and cruel like Rogue once was.

* Franchise/MarvelCinematicUniverse:
** In ''Film/GuardiansOfTheGalaxy'', Yondu Udonta serves as a foil to Thanos on a personal level.
** ''Film/BlackPanther2018''
* ''Film/XMenFilmSeries'':

!!Western Animation
* ''WesternAnimation/MarvelsSpiderMan''
** Anya Crazon serves as one to Gwen Stacy.
* ''WesternAnimation/SpiderManTheAnimatedSeries''
That Alisa basically looks like a younger version of Vanessa without the SkunkStripe is probably not a coincidence.
* ''WesternAnimation/{{Ultimate Spider-Man}}''
** Flash Thompson/Agent Venom to Venom/The Patrioteer/Anti-Venom/Harry Osborn.
*** Though they rarely interact, he is in fact a foil to Harry, especially regarding their relationships to Peter. They're even foils ''financially''! Harry is rich, but humble enough not to flaunt it[[note]]limousine rides and a random "richboy" party aside[[/note]], whilst Flash is extremely [[MilesGloriosus boastful]] to hide the fact that he's dirt poor. They even share [[TalkingToHimself voice actors]]!
Heck, he even says that if it wasn't for his aunt and (dead) uncle, he could've ended up the same as me![[note]] WHY Spidey?! We could've been best friends!! [[/note]]

* In ComicBook/TheAvengers, ComicBook/IronMan and ComicBook/CaptainAmerica can be seen as foils to each other, especially in Comicbook/CivilWar. Cap is a Depression-era, [[NervesOfSteel strong-willed]], [[IncorruptiblePurePureness virtuous]] [[TheCape Cape]] embodying the eternal resilience of UsefulNotes/TheAmericanDream, and Iron Man is a rich, [[BrokenBird neurotic]], [[TheAlcoholic alcoholic]] genius constantly scrambling to cope with the [[DemocracyIsFlawed flaws of democracy]], the possibilities of PoliceBrutality, [[UsefulNotes/YanksWithTanks American abuses of power]], and {{Corrupt Corporate Executive}}s.
* ComicBook/BlackWidow:
** ComicBook/{{Elektra}}. Both are assassins and love interests to Matt Murdock. Both were also ballerinas. However, Black Widow is TheAtoner while Elektra flips between being a hero and a villain depending on what she wants. Black Widow relies on conventional weaponry and spy gadgets while Elektra relies on ancient weaponry such as sais and katanas and her SupernaturalMartialArts. Even their looks are a contrast; Elektra has black hair and wears a red LeotardOfPower while Natasha has red hair and wears a black SpyCatsuit.
** Yelena Belova started out as one to Natasha. While Natasha was a DefectorFromDecadence, Yelena was patriotic to the point of blind devotion. Yelena was also younger and more emotional than the older and reserved Natasha.
* ComicBook/CaptainAmerica and ComicBook/RedSkull. One's a UsefulNotes/WorldWarII hero and the symbol of the American Dream. The other is the ultimate Nazi.
* ''ComicBook/FantasticFour'': Reed Richards and Doctor Doom. They have very similar personalities (bossy, arrogant, brilliant, fascinated by science, prone to SesquipedalianLoquaciousness), with [[GreenEyedMonster jealousy]] being the culprit for Doom's FaceHeelTurn-inspiring [[RivalTurnedEvil hatred for Reed.]] The fundamental difference between them is exemplified by their [[ComesGreatResponsibility divergent]] [[NeverMyFault reactions]] to their respective [[MyGreatestFailure Greatest Failures]].
* The ComicBook/IncredibleHulk and The Leader, as raw strength contrasting with enhanced intelligence. Also Hulk and Thunderbolt Ross.
* [[ComicBook/TheInhumans Black Bolt]] and [[LargeHam Maximus]]. After Maximus's HeelFaceTurn, [[TheCaligula Vulcan]] filled the void during ''ComicBook/WarOfKings''.
* ComicBook/IronMan and Mandarin: Being opposites on the Tech vs Magic scale. Additionally, where Tony is the ultimate futurist and is firmly ensconced within capitalism, The Mandarin is a feudalist who longs for a return to the past.
* ComicBook/TheMightyThor and Loki -- again, one is FlyingBrick, the other is trickster.
* ComicBook/{{Runaways}} and ComicBook/YoungAvengers:
** They were the two primary teenage teams of Marvel in the '00s. Outside the fact that they're both powered crimefighters in the teenage range filled with a wide assortment of power types and origins, they contrast each other greatly. The Runaways did not [[JumpedAtTheCall jump at the call]], they were shoved, on the other hand, the Young Avengers all became superheroes with the full intent and desire to be. Runaways eschew many of the tropes associated with the genre, as in they don't have costumes or codenames (their attempts to adopt them fell flat). In contrast, the Young Avengers are a much more traditional superhero team complete with costumes and codenames. Runaways always had more females than males, while the Young Avengers (being the more traditional team) always had more males than females, adhering to TwoGirlsToATeam. Runaways have a villainous lineage involving their parents and trying to atone for their sins. For comparison, the Young Avengers take on heroic legacies. Runaways were based in Los Angeles, Young Avengers were based in New York City.
* ComicBook/SilverSurfer and Mephisto. One is pretty much the personification of the devil, and hates the other just because he's so damn ''good''.
* Franchise/SpiderMan and [[ComicBook/NormanOsborn Green Goblin]], where the foil occurs in their completely different characters and social status.
** Also applies to Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus after Octavius spent some time acting as the 'superior Spider-Man' while in Peter Parker's body, as [[spoiler:Octavius finally chose to sacrifice his existence to restore Peter when he accepted that he bragged about his own superiority to conceal hi awareness of his own flaws while Peter accepted his responsibility quietly to take on what burdens he could]].
** Rounding out the trio of Spidey's big three villains is Venom. They bear the same power set, even through similar circumstances, but they have different upbringings: Peter was raised by his aunt and uncle after his parents' deaths, while Eddie only had his father to try and earn even basic respect from. Both fight criminals as well, though while Spider-Man believes in ComesGreatResponsibility and holds a ThouShaltNotKill code, Venom blatantly ignores said responsibilities and prides in lethal force, killing even basic muggers in a delusional belief in justice. Lastly, Spider-Man is [[PrimaryColorChampion vividly colored]], with Venom being DeliberatelyMonochrome.
* Reed Richards and Victor Van Damme from ''ComicBook/UltimateFantasticFour'' both share a similar backstory, suffering at the hands of abusive fathers, pouring all their energy into science at a young age. Unlike Victor, however, Reed had a loving mother and younger sister, as well as a best friend in the form of Ben Grimm, which kept his life from being a living hell. [[spoiler:''Ultimate Mystery'' and ''Ultimate Doom'' shows us that even a loving mother, sister and best friend isn't enough to keep Reed from going over the deep end to the point where the heroes are wondering if he's just Doom II]].
* ComicBook/{{Wolverine}} and ComicBook/{{Cyclops}} have always had a relationship like this, though it goes deeper than it might appear at first glance. Wolverine is a scruffy loner who wears his rage on his sleeve, Cyclops is a clean-cut leader known for his stoic personality and his deeply repressed self-doubt; Wolverine is a skilled hand-to-hand brawler with brute strength on his side, Cyclops is a cold strategist with a long-range laser cannon built into his eyes; Wolverine is a veteran soldier and former mercenary who was WalkingTheEarth for years before he met the X-Men, Cyclops grew up at the Xavier Institute through his awkward adolescent years; Wolverine remains aloof from the team, Cyclops sees them as his only true family; Wolverine turns out to have a surprisingly idealistic heart under his gruff exterior, Cyclops turns out to be surprisingly manipulative and calculating under his respectable exterior.
* ComicBook/XMen and all anti-mutant organizations. Charles Xavier and ComicBook/{{Magneto}}, as well. Former friends with similar goals (acceptance for mutants), but ''vastly'' different philosophies and methodologies (helping humanity and proving their worth in the process vs. warring against humanity and overthrowing or exterminating them).
** The Morlocks are also this. One of the biggest complaints their leader Callisto has about the X-Men is that they are mostly made up of [[CursedWithAwesome super powerful]], [[TheBeautifulElite attractive people who live in a mansion]], while the Morlocks are [[BlessedWithSuck deformed, freakish people living in sewers whose mutations physically limit them]].
