Each season usually features a female character that perseveres and survives, even with the odds stacked against them, usually, but not always, played by Sarah Paulson.Creator/SarahPaulson. They include:

* Lana Winters, a lesbian journalist who spends the bulk of the season attempting to escape from an asylum after being wrongfully institutionalized, then surviving an encounter with Bloody Face, a ruthless serial killer, leaving her the only survivor of the season.
* Cordelia Goode, once again portrayed by Paulson, who manages to usurp the title of Supreme witch from her abusive and irresponsible mother, Fiona. Cordelia is also most notably the only witch, besides Fiona, who is not killed, only to be brought back using Vitalum Vitalis.
** Played with in terms of Zoe, who is initially introduced as TheHeroine, only to turn out to be a DecoyProtagonist. She never was the Supreme, as evidenced when she's impaled on a fence post while performing transmutation, one of the Seven Wonders.
* Lee Harris, portrayed by Adina Porter, an alcoholic and former police officer looking to clear her name in the murder of her ex husband by participating in the Roanoke documentaries.
** Played with as well. Shelby's survival seemed to have been a ForegoneConclusion, as she was one of the talking heads during the documentary segment, only to slit her own throat. Later, Audrey, the actress who played Shelby in the documentary segments, seems as though she's going to become the FinalGirl, but is quickly dispatched by police once she tries to avenge Monet, Sophie, and Milo, who had been killed by a possessed Lee.
* Ally Mayfair-Richards, a woman suffering from numerous phobias, who overcomes them to save herself and her son from a murderous clown cult.
* Mallory, played by Billie Lourd, who is a young witch and the next Supreme, tasked with vanquishing Michael Langdon, the Antichrist, taking up Cordelia's mantle and reversing time itself.
* While Donna also survives, GirlNextDoor Brooke fulfills this role wholeheartedly in the ninth season.
* Played with in the fifth season, in which transgender bartender Liz Taylor is the only character to still be alive and not infected with the virus; she's later killed by the Countess, albeit mercifully, reuniting her with her deceased lover.
