** Thor wants to be a "great king" like his father, a conqueror who defends his people by attacking their enemies. He has to learn that [[spoiler:his father regrets that phase of his life and wants his son to be wise, generous, and peaceful]].
** Loki has this to both Thor and Odin. He wants to be seen as a hero the way Thor is, but his natural methods are as TheTrickster rather than a mighty warrior. He feels himself TheUnfavorite with Odin and wants to be seen as a hero to his people, but his method [[spoiler:is to trick Laufey into an invasion so that Loki can assassinate him]], and he has to spend a long, ''long'' time learning that [[spoiler:it's not all about what you do, it's about how you do it and why you do it]].

* WhenAllYouHaveIsAHammer: Averted, but definitely worth mentioning partly because Thor's WeaponOfChoice ''is'' a hammer and partly because it's part of Thor's CharacterDevelopment. Mjölnir is a fine example of a SwissArmyWeapon, able to shoot lightning, return to its wielder's hand when thrown, and grant flight, just for starters. The trick is thinking of nonviolent uses for it, which doesn't occur to Thor at the start of the movie.

* ContinuityEditing: Blink and you'll miss it, but the movie shows Thor's a BigEater in the diner by cutting to him taking in a ''huge'' mouthful of food every time they cut away from Darcy or Jane. Three huge mouthfuls in as many seconds (eggs and pancakes) followed by a mug of coffee.

* MythPrologue: ''Thor'' begins with Odin narrating the history of the conflict with the Frost Giants and how they would attack the mortal realm. The Asgardians would come to Midgard's defense, eventually driving the Frost Giants back to their homeworld and seizing their source of power. It then shows that he's telling this story to his young sons, Thor and Loki.

The trope description says that Casting Gag is an intentional casting choice to make a certain joke/parody; if it isn't intentional then it'd not an example

* CastingGag: It almost certainly wasn't intentional, but this isn't [[Film/TheProfessional the first time]] Natalie Portman has been the much younger partner in a romantic relationship (though at least this one is reciprocal and... y'know what? It's still kind of a problem to have a relationship between a 30ish woman and a 1000ish godman, but nowhere near as bad as Mathilda's crush on Leon).
