Circumstances seem to improve when government officials begin swarming the area, fully aware of the danger and ready to combat the threat. Brian overhears their leader admit that the Blob is an unexpected mutation of a virus in an experimental government satellite that fell back to Earth. The officials place their number one priority on recovering the Blob for use as a weapon. All lives in town are secondary.

A meteorite crashes into the forest outside of the small mountain town of Arborville, California, and is discovered by a local hobo. A blob of slime from the crater attaches itself to the hobo and begins consuming him. The afflicted bum crosses paths with three local teens: jock Paul, cheerleader Meg, and bad boy Brian. The teens take the bum to a hospital, where the Blob consumes him as well as Paul and breaks free to ooze amok throughout the town. Meg tries to get the locals to understand the danger, but no one believes her and instead want to pin the recent trouble on Brian.

The Blob continues to attack more and more townsfolk as
the original.
government agents begin quarantining the population. Meg is forced to rescue her little brother from a cinema that is attacked by the Blob. They flee into the sewers, where Brian arrives just in time to save them, but the lead government scientist tries to kill them to prevent the truth from leaking. The Blob kills the lead scientist and emerges onto the city street, now colossal in size and seeingly unstoppable.

The Blob rampages through the street, killing dozens of fleeing townsfolk. Meg realizes that cold is the Blob's weakness, and she helps a group of townsfolk barricade themselves in the town hall using fire extinguishers. Brian arrives with a snow maker truck and crashes it into the blog. Meg sets an explosive charge on the truck and detonates it, freezing the Blob into a pile of crystals. The town is saved, and they plan to gather the Blob crystals to keep frozen before day breaks. But meanwhile, the town's local priest has kept a few crystals in a jar and begins preaching about a day of judgment soon at hand. TheEndOrIsIt

* AdaptationalVillainy: The remake version of the blob is clearly [[ItCanThink more intelligent]] than the GreyGoo version from the original, making it come across as far more sadistic in the way it chooses to toy with its prey, along with those deaths themselves generally being BloodierAndGorier.
* AdultFear: The cheerleader Meg Penny learns from her parents that her brother Kevin and his friend, Eddie are missing while the town is under quarantine, thinking they snuck out to see a slasher movie. What makes this terrifying was the fact that Meg's little brother is now in danger of being eaten by the titular monster now getting bigger by eating anyone that gets too close. She arrives to find the theatre is in a state of panic with Kevin and Eddie desperately trying to use the emergency exit and while she does save them, they wind up having to evade the Blob in the sewer. The Blob follows them down there and [[spoiler:Eddie then gets pulled underwater. Meg tries to save him only to later see Eddie rise up from the water half-eaten; imagine dying by drowning and being eaten/dissolved alive ''at the same time'']]. What makes this all the more horrifying was the fact [[spoiler:Eddie has an older brother that let them both into the movie, who was deeply worried about his brother and reported the Blob having chased him, Kevin, and Meg into the sewers; and we saw his mother ''hoping he was going to come home safe''. * AnyoneCanDie: For this version, this couldn't be more true. According to an interview on the Australian Blu Ray, Chuck Russell deliberately stole a page from the Hitchcock playbook by killing the character (Paul Taylor) that everyone would identify as "The Hero" halfway into the film so everyone would go "Geeze, if he could die, ANYONE could!"
