* TookALevelInJerkass: Shaft II, while a tough guy, was rather compassionate and understanding in the 2000 film. He is extremely judgmental and homophobic. Arguably, the same can be said for Shaft Sr. He's always had a witty mouth but here, he seems to get a kick out of trash-talking his own son.

* ParentalAbandonment: John II and Maya separated shortly after JJ's birth, and he'd stayed away since, although he sent him (wildly inappropriate) gifts every year for Christmas, birthdays, and graduation.
