* AffablyEvil: Muroto is fastidious and polite, and his sharp mind reminds Sanjuro a little of himself.
* AnimalMotifs: Whereas in Film/Yojimbo Sanjuro's behaviour- his habit of scratching a lot, his confident, shambling walk- is akin to that of a wolf or a dog, in Sanjuro he's compared to a tiger or a cat: he's intelligent and deadly, but much more languid.
* BeautyEqualsGoodness: Inverted with Chamberlain Mutsuta and Superintendent Kikui. The Chamberlain describes himself as having a "horse face", which lead the warriors to mistrust him despite his being an honorable man, while they initially assume that Kikui is a good man who will aid them in dealing with the corrupt officials because he's handsome, when he's really their ringleader. Also inverted with a couple of ugly but well-meaning young sidekicks. Played straight with Sanjuro, who is scruffy but very handsome.
* BigBad: Superintendent Kikui, the CorruptPolitician our heroes are fighting.
* BigGood: Chamberlain Mutsuta.
* BittersweetEnding: Sanjuro kills , but he's not happy about it, given all he'd learned from Mutsuta's wife.
* BrilliantButLazy: Sanjuro is an excellent strategist and a MasterSwordsman, but he would rather spend more time dozing in a corner of the room rather than participating in the activities of his nine companions.

While Yojimbo was a dark comedy about a wandering ronin manipulating two criminal organizations into mutual self-destruction, Sanjuro is a lighter comedy teaming the same character up with ten wacky sidekicks, plus a character who misses out on the whole JewishMother stereotype only by being Japanese. Their mission: expose the corrupt official playing the local government like a fiddle.

Sanjuro (椿三十郎 - Tsubaki Sanjūrō) is a 1962 Japanese Jidaigeki film directed by Creator/AkiraKurosawa. It is the sequel to 1961's Film/Yojimbo, and stars Creator/ToshiroMifune once again. Kurosawa had been writing a film adaptation of the novel Peaceful Days by Shugoro Yamamoto, with the intention of having his assistant director Hiromichi Horikawa direct the project. In response to the popularity of Mifune's character in Yojimbo, the script was rewritten to have Sanjuro be the titular main character, and Kurosawa decided to direct the film himself.

Despite its relatively rushed production (getting released less than eight months after Yojimbos premiere and being adapted from a work that didn't even have its lead character originally), it turned out to be a damn great sequel.

So, you're Creator/AkiraKurosawa, and you've made a pretty successful movie, Film/Yojimbo. You had a good star, Creator/ToshiroMifune, in a role that he was born to play, and Creator/TatsuyaNakadai, a born Mifune antagonist, opposite him. Your story is so good that it will later get swiped wholesale by Creator/SergioLeone. You can't go to Tokyo Disneyland because it's twenty years away from opening, so what do you do now? Well, a sequel, obviously.

* TheStrategist: If there's one lesson the movie repeatedly hammers, it's the value of TheStrategist. The actual number of men in Kikui's faction is somewhere in the hundreds, and they're beaten by nine greenhorns and their accidental leader through careful action and misdirection.

Your story is so good that it'd later get swiped wholesale by Creator/SergioLeone. Disneyland hasn't opened in Japan yet so what do you do? Well, a sequel, obviously.

Despite being a relatively rushed production (having released in under eight months time after Yojimbos premiere and being based on a script that originally didn't have this character, it turned out to be a damn great sequel.

The first movie is more of a dark comedy than a particularly serious movie. Also, the top text could use a more informative description.

Clearly, since Yojimbo was a dark, serious adventure featuring a lone man manipulating two criminal organizations into mutual self-destruction, Sanjuro, the sequel, needs to be that same character with not just one, or two, or even three wacky sidekicks, but ten, plus a character who misses out on the whole JewishMother stereotype only by being Japanese. Oh, and the ending aside, it's a comedy.

All that said, it's still Akira Kurosawa, so it's a pretty damn good movie regardless.

Kurosawa had been writing a film adaptation
of a sequel?

Clearly, since
the novel Peaceful Days by Shugoro Yamamoto, with the intention of having his assistant director Hiromichi Horikawa direct the project. In response to the popularity of Mifune's character in Yojimbo, the script was rewritten to have Sanjuro be the titular main character, and Kurosawa decided to direct the film himself.

While
Yojimbo was is a dark, serious adventure dark comedy featuring a lone wandering man manipulating two criminal organizations into mutual self-destruction, Sanjuro, Sanjuro is a lighter comedy featuring the sequel, needs to be that same character man with not just one, or two, or even three ten wacky sidekicks, but ten, plus a character who misses out on the whole JewishMother stereotype only by being Japanese. Oh, Japanese.

and the ending aside, it's being based on a comedy.
