** After Dooku is killed, Palpatine uncharacteristically tells Anakin to leave the wounded and unconscious Obi-Wan behind. The reason why becomes clear after Palpatine unveils himself and Anakin's fall. With Dooku's defeat and murder, Anakin's proven he's finally ready for Sith conversion. The next step is knocking out the support structure anchoring him to the Light Side – anchors like Obi-Wan. Palpatine's ''not'' going to pass up a golden opportunity like this to remove Obi-Wan from the equation. While Anakin ruins his attempt, Palpatine simply adjusts tactics to try again later.

Massive example crosswicking, Day 3. At long last, I managed to finish the job here. Thanks to gjjones for the tweaks. =)

to:

** The Clone Wars became one for end up being this as the Jedi two armies are both under the control of Darth Sidious. The Republic is doomed with either side winning and the Separatists. In the end, only true battle was between Palpatine came out ahead.and the Jedi, a battle that the Jedi lose as the Republic is reborn as the Galactic Empire.

* RankUp: Anakin Skywalker rises through the Jedi ranks, being a Knight as of this movie, but resents the fact that the Council gives him a seat (at Palpatine's insistence), but doesn't grant him the rank of Master. In contrast, Obi-Wan is noticeably sitting on the Council with his promotion never commented upon (he was already promoted from Padawan to Jedi Knight after defeating Darth Maul in ''Film/ThePhantomMenace'', which was presumably a FieldPromotion).

* ReentryScare: Happens to Obi-Wan and Anakin's ship about 30 minutes into the movie. Obi-Wan quips "Another happy landing" moments after the ship crashes into a tower.

* RepriseMedley: The movie features a medley of the recurring "Force Theme", "Duel of the Fates" from ''Film/ThePhantomMenace'', and "Clash of Lightsabers" from ''Film/TheEmpireStrikesBack''.

* RevengeBeforeReason: The titular Revenge of the Sith was ultimately unnecessary. While [[TheOrder the Jedi Order]] were no fans of [[BigBad Darth Sidious]] even before ThePurge, they weren't much of a threat to him either, particularly in light of his being [[MoleInCharge supreme ruler]] of TheRepublic and the WorldsBestWarrior to boot with [[TheChosenOne the only man in the galaxy capable of besting him]] becoming a FallenHero. By settling a millennia-old score to satisfy his own sadism he [[HoistByHisOwnPetard triggered an epic chain of events that would eventually culminate in his being overthrown]].

* ReversePsychology: Palpatine suggests (through Anakin) that Anakin be the one to lead the campaign to take out General Grievous on Utapau, and Mace Windu says sharply (paraphrased), "We'll make our ''own'' decision on who to send." The Jedi Council chooses Obi-Wan to lead the campaign instead, and while he's away, all hell breaks loose on Coruscant.

to:

* ReversePsychology: When Palpatine suggests (through Anakin) that makes Anakin be his representative on the one Council, they begrudgingly allow it but refuse to lead promote him to the campaign rank of Master, thus getting him pissed off at them and making him easier to take out corrupt. Later, when Palpatine directs the Jedi to send Anakin to kill General Grievous on Utapau, and Mace Windu says sharply (paraphrased), "We'll make our ''own'' decision on who to send." The Jedi Council chooses Grievous, they send Obi-Wan to lead the campaign instead, and while meaning that he's away, all hell breaks loose not on Coruscant.Coruscant to prevent Anakin from succumbing to Palpatine's influence and falling to TheDarkSide.

* SanityHasAdvantages: The movie sees Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker in a duel to the death. Obi-Wan is a MasterSwordsman, but even then Anakin is TheChosenOne who has {{fallen|hero}} to TheDarkSide -- Obi-Wan only wins the resultant fight because Anakin, as part of his fall, is tapping more and more into [[EmotionalPowers his anger for power]] -- but AngerIsNotEnough when fighting someone like Obi-Wan, and as Anakin digs deeper into his anger to the point of {{Ax craz|y}}iness, he becomes reckless -- exposing openings that Obi-Wan exploits to end the battle by way of LiteralDisarming.

* ScarsAreForever: The scarring Anakin Skywalker incurred in this movie is what made Darth Vader's iconic appearance and SFX in the original trilogy possible -- even necessary. In a bizarre reversal, the one scar on his face beforehand is the only one that did fade away.
* SceneryDissonance: The execution of Aayla Secura, which is mandated due to Palpatine's Order 66, takes place in a lush colorful alien jungle (viewable [[https://youtu.be/09n0qd_n4c0?t=60 here]]).

* ScrewTheRulesIMakeThem: Mace Windu confronts Chancellor Palpatine in his office in order to arrest him for being a Sith Lord and tells him that the Senate will decide his fate, to which Palpatine replies, "I ''AM'' THE SENATE.", in a low and intimidating voice. Palpatine, now revealed as Darth Sidious, kills three of the Jedi's best swordsmen (under Yoda, Anakin, Windu, and Obi-Wan of course, but still celebrated swordsmen) in mere seconds and is climactically "defeated" by Windu in time for Anakin to arrive and "save" him. [[FaceHeelTurn Darth Vader]] is born and Palpatine's plan to kill the Jedi is validated by the Senate under the pretense that the Jedi tried to assassinate him. Because the Senate granted him emergency powers, his boast is one he is quite within his legal rights to carry out. The Republic had already become a PeoplesRepublicOfTyranny before he renamed it to TheEmpire.

* ShiftingSituationDuel: The culminating duel between Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi starts in a temple on a volcanic planet. Said temple begins to [[CollapsingLair collapse throughout the fight]], as the two are forced to transverse through the crumbling building. The two of them then swing their sabers at each other while climbing a tower, before landing on levitating platforms where the fight continues. The battle ends after Obi-wan uses some approaching high ground to his advantage.

* ShooOutTheClowns: Anakin orders R2 to stay with the ship as he makes his way to slaughter the Separatist leaders, later [=C-3PO=] remains in Padmé's ship and doesn't ''even come out'' when Anakin mortally injures her and during Obi-Wan and Anakin's duel; he only has an off-screen moment for carrying the dying Padmé back to the ship, and utters just one more funny comment just before the movie ends.

* SingleBiomePlanet: Mustafar, a volcanic planet with only a few inhabitable rocky landscapes. Interestingly, it wasn't always a volcanic world, although the explanation for its cataclysm varies between continuities. In canon, Mustafar used to be lush and green until Lady Corvax devastated the planet with an artifact called the Bright Star. After the events of the VR game Vader Immortal in which the Bright Star is destroyed, at least one forest has started growing back by the time of ''Film/TheRiseOfSkywalker''.

* SkeletonsInTheCoatCloset: General Grievous' robotic head is fashioned to resemble an animal skull.

* SmashTheSymbol: Yoda and Palpatine's final battle takes place in the Senate Chambers. Palpatine pulls the Pods the senators use off the wall and hurls them at Yoda, destroying them and whatever additional pods are hit by the projectiles. The fight is destroying the very symbol of democracy.

* SoftWater: Ironically used when Obi-Wan is believed dead after falling from a cliff into deep water from only about 60 feet-- which is not even enough to kill a normal person: in response, the Clone-troopers say [[NoOneCouldSurviveThat "he couldn't have survived that fall"]], despite knowing full-well that Jedi are capable of falling safely from extreme heights -- and also knowing that Jedi carry compact SCUBA equipment (both of which Obi-Wan, in fact, uses to escape)
* SoHappyTogether: A platonic version. Before Obi-wan leaves for Utapau, he and Anakin have a talk, with Anakin apologizing for all the trouble he's caused him and Obi-wan replying that he's proud of Anakin (the first and last SoProudOfYou we ever hear from him). That final smile they share is the last happy moment either of them will know before Anakin becomes Darth Vader.
* SoProudOfYou: The last time Obi-Wan and Anakin see each other before their ill-fated duel in Mustafar, the former tells the latter about how proud he is of him. In hindsight, the irony is unfortunate for both of them.
-->'''Obi-Wan:''' You are strong and wise, Anakin, and I am very proud of you. I have trained you since you were a small boy. I have taught you everything I know. And you have become a far greater Jedi than I could ever hope to be.
* SpaceIsAnOcean: The space battle that opens the movie takes this to an extreme, with kilometres-long spaceships side by side, firing broadsides at each other like ships of the line from the Age of Sail. Any doubt as to what the scene was trying to evoke was removed when you saw the ''gun crews'' loading and firing their giant blaster cannon through force-field gun ports. There's no excuse for the gun crews and gun ports, but the side-by-side combat is excusable: the battle takes place in the orbit of the Republic's capital planet. The attackers are not there for conquest but a raid and kidnapping; for that they have to get close to the planet to land ground troops safely.

* SpectacularSpinning: Palpatine gracefully twirls in the air while pouncing at the Jedi Masters that have come to arrest him.
* SpinAttack: Obi-Wan does it while fighting Anakin, and Palpatine notably does a spinning leap to attack four Jedi at once, which was so over the top that it became a meme unto itself. Yoda again does his signature spinning jumps.

* StoppingTheBlameGame: Anakin's FaceHeelTurn costs him his relationship with Padmé -- and he blames Obi-Wan, who will have none of it.
-->'''Anakin:''' You turned her against me!\\
'''Obi-Wan:''' You have done that ''yourself''.\\
'''Anakin:''' YOU WILL NOT TAKE HER FROM ME!\\
'''Obi-Wan:''' Your anger and your lust for power have already done that. You have allowed this Dark Lord to twist your mind, until now... until now you have become the very thing you swore to destroy.
* StormingTheBeaches: A villainous example occurs during the Battle of Kashyyyk, in which the Separatist droid army advances on the beachfront, with the combined clone and Wookiee armies attempting to fend them off.
* StormingTheCastle: The ''Invisible Hand'', though this one's at the beginning. Inverted later on when the 501st storm the Jedi Temple.

* StrikeMeDownWithAllOfYourHatred: When Palpatine reveals himself as a Sith to Anakin and the latter ignites his lightsaber, it plays out more like a KillMeNowOrForeverStayYourHand situation, as by then Palpatine is fairly confident he can turn Anakin to the Dark Side. At one point, however, Palpatine almost seems to goad Anakin into killing him in an attempt to convince the young Jedi of ThePowerOfHate.
--->'''Palpatine:''' Are you going to kill me?\\
'''Anakin:''' I would certainly like to!\\
'''Palpatine:''' I know you would. ''(closes his eyes and [[PsychoticSmirk grins]])'' I can feel your anger. It gives you focus... makes you ''stronger''.

to:

* StumblingInTheNewForm: Darth Vader's first steps after his [[DarkLordOnLifeSupport cyborg transformation]] has been fully completed... aren't particularly graceful.

* SuperPersistentMissile: There are missiles that are ''too'' persistent; a pair of missiles are launched at Anakin's fighter, and when he spins it they corkscrew around to match until they collide and explode.
* SuperpoweredEvilSide: As explained by Creator/GeorgeLucas, this is also how Anakin defeats MasterSwordsman Count Dooku... but it has the cost of causing him to edge closer to TheDarkSide. Unlike his son, he gives into his anger and kills Dooku, leading to his fall to the Dark Side later on. And despite believing himself to be more powerful because of this, it leads to him trying a reckless maneuver during his fight with Obi-Wan Kenobi that results in some horrific injuries (which are the reason he needs to wear the black suit in the original trilogy).
* SurpassedTheTeacher: One of the last things Obi-Wan says to Anakin invokes this trope (and echoes what Obi-Wan's own master told him in ''Film/ThePhantomMenace''), but it's later [[SubvertedTrope proven to not be the case]] when he defeats Vader in combat.
-->'''Obi-Wan:''' You are strong and wise, [[WellDoneSonGuy Anakin]], and [[SoProudOfYou I am very proud of you]]. I have trained you since you were a small boy. I have taught you everything I know. And you have become a far greater Jedi than I could ever hope to be.

* SwordDrag: There's a scene in which General Grievous spins four lightsaber blades like propellers. The blades are shown to be chopping into the floor as he advances on Obi-Wan.

* {{Tableau}}: The movie closes with Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru, with baby Luke in their arms, [[WatchingTheSunset Watching The Twin Sunset]] in a direct ShoutOut to an iconic tableau from the original film.
* TacticalWithdrawal: The movie opens with a large Seperatist Fleet, led by Count Dooku and General Grevious, trying to make their getaway after attacking the Republic capital of Coruscant and abducting Chancellor Palpatine, as arriving Republic reinforcements try to stop them and rescue the Chancellor. Grevious and his fleet escape, but not without Palpatine being rescued by the Jedi and their fleet taking serious losses.
* {{Tagline}}: "The saga is complete."
* TalkingIsAFreeAction: Dooku taunts Anakin, which just angers him and drives him to defeat Dooku [[OffWithHisHead particularly brutally]]. General Grievous tries verbal intimidation on Obi-Wan during their duel, but it doesn't work. Obi-Wan and Anakin exchange words during their duel with Obi-Wan trying to reason with Anakin, but it doesn't work in that case either.
* TearsOfRemorse: The newly-forged Darth Vader, after killing a roomful of untrained "younglings" in the Jedi Temple and then a roomful of surrendering [[YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness Trade Federation leaders]] and their bodyguards.

* TermsOfEndangerment: Palpatine calls Yoda a rasping "myyyy llllittle grrreeeeeeen frrrriend" during their duel.
* ThanatosGambit: This is a common Sith temptation to TheDarkSide (as evidenced by Palpatine doing the same thing to Anakin in this movie that he tries on Luke years later), because of the overarching creed of IfYouKillHimYouWillBeJustLikeHim the Jedi abide by: if a Jedi finds a Sith Lord, the Sith Lord simply stands down and pretends to be defenseless in order to be non-threatening, meaning if the Jedi takes their life at that point it was of their own motivation and thus they have succumbed to the Dark (hatred). A Sith Lord must be ready for death at any time (due to KlingonPromotion and all the risks that come with it) so using one's own death as the linchpin of a FaceHeelTurn for a Jedi is a perfectly acceptable endgame.
* ThereAreTwoKindsOfPeopleInTheWorld:

* ThrowingYourSwordAlwaysWorks: Yoda kills a clone trooper this way while he is still surrounded by blaster fire. This is probably covered by RuleOfCool though, plus ''he's goddamned Yoda.'' {{Justified|Trope}} as a lightsaber's [[LaserBlade blade]] has no weight so the only source of mass and balance is the actual hilt and every "side" of it is an AbsurdlySharpBlade, and also because Jedi can manipulate the lightsaber's trajectory with the Force to make sure it hits blade-first.
* ThrownOutTheAirlock: General Grievous does this to ''himself'', but in order to escape the Jedi (he can survive in space, and had a grappling hook that allowed him to reattach to the ship). Blast panels come down soon after to prevent others from getting blown out.
* ThwartedCoupDeGrace: Mace Windu manages to defeat Chancellor Palpatine in a lightsaber duel. Anakin charges in and tells Windu not to finish Palpatine as the latter is begging for his life. Just as Windu is about to KillHimAlready, [[NiceJobBreakingItHero Anakin hacks Windu's hand off]] and Palpatine breaks out the Force Lightning.

* TragicMistake: Anakin breaks with the Jedi by unintentionally aiding Palpatine in killing Mace Windu. "What have I done?" indeed. [[WordOfGod Lucas]] suggests that the ''real'' tragic mistake was Mace Windu taking that dramatic killing swing at Palpatine, instead of just finishing him off instantly. It gave Anakin time to intervene, also suggests that while Palpatine knew Anakin would intervene, Mace had no idea it would happen, leaving him deceived by the old man, and/or that Anakin did not intend for Mace Windu to be killed by Palpatine, as he was actually trying to stop Windu from falling to the Dark Side by murdering Palpatine (presumably due to guilt for killing Dooku). Unfortunately, he didn't anticipate that Palpatine would play possum and then attack Mace Windu when his guard was forcibly dropped.

** Anakin impulsively (and unnecessarily) refuses to see Padmé Amidala, his wife, trying to talk him down, and Obi-Wan Kenobi stowing away on her ship, [[WithUsOrAgainstUs as anything but an attack on him]]. This results in him Force-choking his wife and dueling with his former Jedi Master, ending with him having his three remaining limbs chopped off and getting burned very badly by the lava. The old Anakin might have been able to find a way to save his wife from dying in childbirth, but after waking up in the black suit, he realizes that his own fear and anger ended up killing her.

* TreetopTown: The Wookiee homeworld, Kashyyyk, is covered in [[TreetopWorld global forests of mile-tall trees]], and all Wookiee cities are built in their canopies, far above the lightless forest floor. The movie shows that there ''are'' portions of Kashyyyk (along coasts, for example) where the trees are lower to the ground, but Wookiees are arboreal by nature (for example their hands and feet have retractable claws specifically adapted to climbing trees) and don't ''want'' to live on the ground even if they can (another contrast to the Ewoks).
* TriggerPhrase: As soon as a clone hears the "execute Order 66" command from Palpatine, he will stop supporting the leading Jedi in whatever activity was ongoing and proceeds to kill them.
* TripodTerror: The AT-AP (All-Terrain Attack Pod) Walker seen in the movie is a tripod. However, the third leg is retractable -- it primarily serves to steady the Walker when using its artillery cannon.

* TwilightOfTheSupers: The purpose of Order 66 is the purge/extermination of the Jedi Order all across the galaxy, unbalancing the Force in favour of their enemies, the Sith.

* UngratefulBastard: Anakin was rather distrustful of the Jedi for not going easy on him and more so when he was refused the rank of Jedi Master while being put on the Jedi Council. So how does he repay them after all his years of serving them? By making his FaceHeelTurn to TheDarkSide and killing them after Order 66 is executed. Subsequent materials have shown that he's got a few good reasons for distrusting them. Them treating him like the bad guy when it was Palpatine who was forcing them to put him on the council just gave him another reason.

* {{Understatement}}:
** Early on, Anakin is in a turboshaft above a hundred-meter drop, an unconscious Obi-Wan slung over his shoulder and Palpatine hanging on to him for dear life. When Obi-Wan comes to, Anakin warns him that they're "in a bit of a situation."
** Anakin, just after the atmospheric entry tore off the bigger part of the ''Invisible Hand'' (the ship he happens to be flying): "We lost something." This was immediately {{lampshade|Hanging}}d with Obi-Wan's reply: "Not to worry, we are still flying ''half'' a ship."
* UnfriendlyFire: Part of the Great Jedi Purge is enacted this way, with the Clonetroopers turning on their Jedi commanders and shooting them while they're distracted fighting the Separatists. In particular, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ki-Adi-Mundi are in the middle of battles when their troops turn on them, and others are patrolling and looking for enemies when it happens. Added DiffLines:

* WithGreatPowerComesGreatOpposition: This is what Anakin Skywalker comes to believe of his relations with the Jedi Council: that they are jealous and afraid of his power as the TheChosenOne of the Force. In reality, only one Jedi Master, Mace Windu, felt something along the lines, while the rest were "only" too mired in the conservative inertia of millennia worth of Jedi traditions to deal with Anakin's unusual circumstances appropriately. The rest was really just Anakin's delusional paranoia skillfully played up by Darth Sidious to turn him to TheDarkSide.
* WithUsOrAgainstUs: When Anakin Skywalker-cum-Darth Vader throws that line at Obi-Wan, he simply responds, "Only a Sith deals in absolutes" (which, ironically, is itself an absolute) and ignites his saber.

Added DiffLines:

* WonTheWarLostThePeace: This is what The Clone Wars turned out to be for the Republic and Jedi. In spite of many victories, and the ultimate fall of the Separatist faction, it was all Palpatine's EvilPlan to kill off as many Jedi as possible and corrupt Anakin. * YouAreNotReady: Anakin's accession to Jedi Master. Mace Windu knows a thing or two about ready, and Anakin is not ready. Similarly, Yoda confronted Palpatine on his own because Obi-Wan, while strong, was not yet nearly strong ''enough'' to face the Dark Lord of the Sith.
* YouAreTooLate: Yoda ''loses''. The Old Republic is in ruins, the Jedi have been slaughtered, Palpatine is triumphant. The only glimmer of hope for the galaxy lies in Padmé's two children, who will go on to become the protagonists of the Original Trilogy.
* YouCantFightFate: Anakin foresees his beloved Padmé's death and tries to find ways to prevent it, which leads him to the dark side. Ultimately, he fails to prevent Padmé's death. In fact, ''he'' is the direct cause of it. She "gives up on life" because she loses him to the dark side (and the force choking he previously applied onto her didn't help either).
* YouCantThwartStageOne: The good guys are [[DoomedByCanon doomed to failure]], since otherwise the original trilogy wouldn't happen. If you watch the series in chronological order, their failure to stop Palpatine in ''Sith'' becomes this trope in play.

* {{Biomanipulation}}: One key example occurs when Palpatine asks Anakin Skywalker if he's ever heard of "the tragedy of Darth Plagueis the wise". He complains about how unfair it was he wasn't getting made a master, but Mace simply tells him to take a seat and leaves it at that. In this case, Anakin's temper tantrum had proven Mace's point that he's not ready for the responsibility being a master entails, given his troubled emotional state, and this gesture was a favor to a man they really don't trust (and have no good reason to [[BigBad considering]]). Massive example crosswicking, Day 2. I needed several days of rest due to my flu (and I'm actually still sick, but greatly recovering), hence why I didn't edit the page again until now. Also giving my thanks to St Fan for the tweaks, I really should have paid attention to Padmé's name having the tilde, among other things. Hopefully I've done everything well in this edit. Only one more to go! =)

* GeoEffects: Obi-Wan gains the high ground on Mustafar, and when Darth Vader attempts to leap over him, Obi-Wan slices his three organic limbs off in mid-leap.

* GoForTheEye: R2-D2 spars against a buzz droid with his electric prod. A few zaps don't kill it, but Obi-Wan recommends R2 aim for the droid's "eye" and thus it's instantly fried.

* GoldenMeanFallacy: Invoked in the opening crawl by telling the viewer that "there are heroes on both sides" in the Clone Wars. Actually, the statement is both true and false. Although a great many of the combatants -- both Republicans and Separatists -- certainly have idealistic reasons for fighting, the entire war is a sham, being secretly manipulated by Sith agents who are RunningBothSides. The movie depicts both the Jedi and the Sith as power-hungry and ruthless, but the Sith are clearly worse in that their ruthlessness derives not from self-righteousness but from pure greed (and their only saving grace is that [[AtLeastIAdmitIt they eventually come clean about their ultimate goal]]).

* GravityScrew: At the beginning of the film, gravity remains oriented toward Coruscant's surface as General Grievous's flagship alternately falls nose-first toward the planet, and is brought under control again, resulting in some fun running-on-walls scenes.
* GravitySucks: The Separatist flagship gets shot once too often and promptly plunges straight down. The massive deceleration that would have been needed to allow this would probably have flattened everyone on board the ship. That ''would'' be an issue.
* GripingAboutGremlins: The "buzz droids" are heavily inspired by gremlins. They are tiny robots deployed by a TrickBomb that tear enemy starfighters apart in mid-flight.
* HangingByTheFingers: Yoda was left hanging on the chancellor's podium by his fingers after his battle with Darth Sidious. He falls off after a few minutes but survives and escapes from the Senate chamber.
* HarmlessElectrocution: Palpatine shocks Yoda with such force that he's literally BlownAcrossTheRoom. However, [[PlayingPossum this may have been a simple ruse]], because he gets up again a moment later.

* HeroicRematch: Anakin gets his arm cut off by Count Dooku in the climax of ''Film/AttackOfTheClones'', but ends up [[OffWithHisHead decapitating him]] in their rematch during the opening of this movie.

* HollywoodWebCam: The ''Star Wars'' franchise is usually pretty good at avoiding the trope. However, it does crop up in this movie, which features a conference call in the Jedi Council chambers with holograms of several Jedi Masters who are remote-calling from the front lines. These holograms not only look around the room at the various people who '''are''' present, but also '''sit in their respective seats''' in the chamber.

* IAmTheNoun:

to:

* IAmTheNoun:IAmTheNoun: When [[BigBad Chancellor Palpatine]] is about to be arrested by Mace Windu for treason and conspiracy, and Windu says that the Senate will decide his fate, he simply replies he ''is'' the Senate. Given that his manipulations have essentially granted him control of the Senate, it is not an empty statement.

* ICanChangeMyBeloved: Padmé says that Anakin is still a good man even though [[Film/AttackOfTheClones he killed Sand People]], even after he had killed children, [[spoiler:and even after he almost killed ''her''. Her last words were that there was still good in him. She was right, but it took [[Film/ReturnOfTheJedi their son to bring it out of him]].]]

* ImmortalityImmorality: Palpatine's conversations with Anakin imply that [[AlwaysChaoticEvil the Sith]] are this trope, able to resist or even halt death using techniques and knowledge that the Jedi would consider to be abominable. It's a big pack of lies though (considering he's a ManipulativeBastard attempting to convert Anakin to TheDarkSide). In fact, after Anakin's final turn to the dark side, Palpatine coyly admits that he doesn't actually know the secret to immortality and that he and Anakin will have to discover it together.
* ImmortalitySeeker: According to [[UnreliableNarrator Palpatine/Darth Sidious]], [[PredecessorVillain his master Darth Plagueis]] was this. [[{{Irony}} Ironically he could save others, but not himself]] [[RuleOfTwo from his own apprentice.]]

* ImproperlyParanoid: As part of his increasing downward spiral, Anakin becomes convinced the Jedi Council don't trust him. Admittedly, Mace Windu very emphatically ''doesn't'', but Anakin also suspects Obi-Wan is that same. Come the confrontation on Mustafar, when he's become Darth Vader, for a moment he actually thinks Padmé's turned on him as well, and then pulls a PsychicStrangle onto her, causing her the very death he swore to avoid at first.

* InevitableWaterfall: Or rather an inevitable ''lava''fall. During the duel on Mustafar, Obi-Wan and Vader are clinging onto a large structure that broke off from its foundation... until the two realize it's about to float off a waterfall-like cliff, except with lava instead of water.

to:

* InevitableWaterfall: Or rather an inevitable ''lava''fall. During InTheBack: As soon as Order 66 is brought up, the duel on Mustafar, troops accompanying Aayla Secura shoot her in the back. [[ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill Over and over.]] The other assassinations play out similarly (e.g. Plo Koon is shot down by his wingman, and Commander Cody tries to kill Obi-Wan and Vader are clinging onto from behind with an artillery cannon but fails), though Ki-Adi-Mundi turns around at the last second. Which was the ''entire point'' of not just Order 66, but the Clone Wars as a large structure whole: to weaken the Jedi (and Jedi senses) far enough that broke off from its foundation... until when you shoot, their back is still towards you when the two realize it's about to float off a waterfall-like cliff, except bolt hits. Subverted with lava instead Yoda, who is ''not'' having any of water.that backstabbing. Yoda is aware of what's going on as the Jedi are being slaughtered, far too many to simply be attributed to combat. When the clones approach him with weapons drawn, he knows what they're up to and strikes first.
* IntimidationDemonstration:
** Grievous pulls out all four of his lightsabers and begins spinning them and cutting up the floor as he moves towards Obi-Wan. However, Obi-Wan isn't fazed by this and makes short work of him.
** Yoda makes some flourishes with his lightsaber while [[TalkingIsAFreeAction challenging Palpatine to a fight]].
** Anakin also twirls his lightsaber around during a break in his duel with Obi-Wan. He can be seen doing the same thing during the arena battle in ''Film/AttackOfTheClones''.

* JustYouAndMeAndMyGuards: Grievous tries this when Obi-Wan tracks him down. When it doesn't work, he defaults to LeaveHimToMe.

* KickThemWhileTheyAreDown: Palpatine orders Anakin to execute the literally disarmed Count Dooku after Anakin defeated him. After a moment of hesitation on Anakin's part, Palpatine commands him to do it -- slipping into his Darth Sidious voice in the process -- Anakin beheads Dooku. This act serves the double purpose of removing a no longer useful pawn and bringing Anakin ever closer to the Sith way of thinking.

* KillHimAlready: [[AWolfInSheepsClothing Palpatine]] urges Anakin [[FinishHim to kill Count Dooku after defeating him.]] He does, by beheading.
* KillMeNowOrForeverStayYourHand: When Anakin finds out that Palpatine is the Sith Lord the Jedi have been looking for, he ignites his lightsaber. Palpatine, who had been hinting that he had the power to save Padmé from dying, asks if Anakin is going to kill him. Anakin replies that he'd ''like'' to -- but he puts his lightsaber away, partly because cold-blooded murder isn't the Jedi way but mostly because he still hoped to save Padmé's life. The whole scene is also a CallForward to ''Film/ReturnOfTheJedi'' when Palpatine tells Luke "StrikeMeDownWithAllOfYourHatred", which indicates that Palpatine is fond of such gambits.

* LastMinuteBabyNaming: Padmé doesn't name her twins until they are born, and she's dying.

to:

* LastMinuteBabyNaming: Padmé doesn't name her twins until they are born, and she's dying. [[JustifiedTrope Justified]], since it's entirely possible that Padmé and Anakin ''had'' discussed the names beforehand (like they had in the novelization). However, since Anakin is not allowed to be married or have children, she couldn't really talk about such things with anyone else; when she does give birth, it's quite a bit late for such worries to be relevant.
* LastNoteNightmare: The soundtrack album for the movie provides a different variation - instead of trailing off like the other movies, the music [[ScareChord launches immediately into a brassy fanfare]] for the ActionPrologue (the movie cuts this and uses a DramaticTimpani instead).

* LavaIsBoilingKoolAid: In the [[ClimacticVolcanoBackdrop climactic fight scene]] [[spoiler: between Obi-Wan and Anakin]], the lava behaves surprisingly like a river, complete with a water-like magma fall into a lava lake and lots of what appears to be lava mist all over the place. Admittedly, the whole scene [[RuleOfCool looks awesome.]]
* LavaSurfing: During the climactic duel on [[LethalLavaLand Mustafar]], Anakin and Obi-Wan surf a lava river on droids that have small-scale DeflectorShields to protect them from melting.

* LeaveNoSurvivors: Darth Sidious orders the newly christened Darth Vader to wipe out Viceroy Gunray and the other Separatist leaders. As well as, a few scenes earlier, the Jedi at the Temple.
--> '''Sidious:''' Every single Jedi, including your friend Obi-Wan, is now an enemy of the Republic. Do what must be done. Do not hesitate. Show no mercy.
* LeftForDead: Clone troopers shoot at Obi-Wan -- who falls into water and is left for dead (despite knowing that Jedi can both fall any distance and breathe underwater). The clones simply remarked (literally): "No One Could Have Survived That." Their GenreSavvy commander told them to continue searching.
* LethalLavaLand: Mustafar is a planet entirely covered in erupting volcanoes, rivers of lava, and barren crags of jagged black rock.

* LimitedWindowOfVulnerability: Chancellor Palpatine goads Anakin into summarily executing the defenseless Count Dooku, justifying it by claiming he is too dangerous to be left alive. This, of course, turns out to be a lie, since Palpatine is secretly Dooku's master and, hence, in no danger at any point... however, the time pressure itself is real in that scene, as Dooku's execution by Anakin is part of Palpatine's plan to seduce the latter to TheDarkSide, and he must get him to do it before Anakin's own master, Obi-Wan (whom Dooku knocked out earlier), regains consciousness, as he would remind Anakin that Jedi do not kill their prisoners.
* LiteralDisarming: After having lost one of his hands in the previous episode, Anakin loses his ''other'' arm, as well as both legs for good measure, at the end of his duel with Obi-Wan on Mustafar, which leaves him helplessly burning up next to a river of lava.
* LockedOutOfTheFight: Obi-Wan gets locked out when Dooku knocks him out and crushes him under a platform.
* LonelyAtTheTop: Anakin Skywalker turned to the Dark Side to not only bring peace and order to the galaxy but to save his beloved wife Padmé, ultimately suffering near-fatal injuries in the hopes of achieving these goals. The news that not only is she dead but ''he'' himself killed her and (he thinks) her unborn children shatters Anakin; the only thing he can utter after waking up is a gut-wrenching BigNo, leaving him to become the EmptyShell Darth Vader. So he did become NumberTwo of the Galactic Empire, but maintaining it is the only raison d'etre he has left.
* LosingYourHead: General Grievous' bodyguard robots can continue fighting after decapitation due to having a backup brain and optical receptors in their chests.
* LoveMakesYouDumb: Anakin Skywalker's love for Padmé Amidala and his fear of her dying is one of the main driving forces behind many of his actions in this film, resulting in his turn to the Dark Side.

* MainCharacterFinalBoss: Anakin Skywalker gradually become more corrupt due to Emperor Palpatine playing on his fears of Padmé's death. By the end of the film, Anakin has killed several younglings and now intends to rule the galaxy as Darth Vader. After a climatic fight, Anakin loses his limbs and is left to die by Obi Wan, ensuring Anakin is DoomedByCanon to become Darth Vader, the iconic villain of the Original Trilogy.

** [[spoiler:Anakin killing Gunray and his separatist minions]] is an inversion of this. The movie is a prequel, so it is more like Make Way for the Old Villains... but in the story's timeline, he is the newer villain.
** Following up the defeat of General Grievous, the Battle Droids become deactivated to make room for the Stormtroopers.

* MechanicalHorse: General Grievous' Tsmeu-6 Bike is able to function both as a [[MonowheelMayhem monowheel]] and a four-legged running beast.
* MeleeDisarming:
** While he and Anakin are fighting Dooku together, Obi-Wan is caught in a chokehold by Dooku using the Force, and drops his lightsaber; Dooku then throws him across the room and knocks him unconscious.
** Dooku himself is disarmed more brutally when Anakin, angered by seeing Obi-Wan being defeated and injured, attacks Dooku and defeats him; Anakin takes Dooku's lightsaber when he drops it as Anakin cuts his hands off.
** Obi-Wan uses a staff to knock General Grievous' blaster out of his hand while in the middle of a melee fight with him. (In the comic adaptation Obi-Wan also disarms Grievous twice by cutting two of his lightsaber hilts in half, but in the film Obi-Wan instead cuts his hands off.)
** In one scene where Obi-Wan and Anakin are shown grappling while Anakin is unarmed, implying Obi-Wan disarmed him offscreen. They end up kicking and clotheslining each other, leaving both of them disarmed until they grab their lightsabers again. The scene was originally meant to show them both getting disarmed and winding up with each other's weapons briefly, but this part was changed, so in some shots Obi-Wan has his own lightsaber and in others he has Anakin's as a continuity error.
** Also during his duel with Palpatine, Mace Windu disarms Palpatine by kicking him in the face, which knocks Palpatine onto his back and sends his lightsaber flying out the window.
** During the duel between Yoda and Palpatine, after fighting with a lightsaber at first Palpatine then attacks Yoda (who still has his lightsaber) by throwing objects at him with the Force, hinting Palpatine was disarmed and lost his lightsaber offscreen. (It's also possible he simply turned it off and put it away himself.) As well, Palpatine disarms Yoda by shooting lightning at him, which tears Yoda's lightsaber out of his hands.

* MetaphoricallyTrue: Ironically done by [[BigBad Palpatine]] of all people. When giving his speech declaring himself the Emperor, he claims the attack from the Jedi left him "scarred and deformed" in order to garner sympathy. While technically true he conveniently leaves out the fact that the Jedi were coming to arrest him because they found out he was a Sith Lord, and that he started the fight by resisting arrest.

* MilitaryCoup: The Jedi High Council, having discovered that Chancellor Palpatine was actually Darth Sidious, the Sith who had orchestrated the Clone Wars to put himself in power, attempt a coup, planning to kill him and overthrow the Senate to eliminate the corruption and his control over the Republic... JustAsPlanned: Palpatine had already in place measures to eliminate the Jedi and turn the Republic in the Galactic Empire, but needed a legal excuse to do so, thus he revealed himself to Anakin knowing he'd report him to the Council and how they'd react.
* MillionMookMarch: A battalion of clone troopers (who are ''now'' evil), marches into the Jedi Temple, led by Darth Vader.

* MovingTheGoalposts: Palpatine does this to Anakin, stringing him along with promises of teaching him Plagueis' ability to save people from death. When he's being threatened by Mace Windu, he claims to have the power himself, but after Anakin saves him he immediately backtracks and states that only Plagueis ever knew it but they can discover the secret together if Anakin keeps doing his bidding. Ultimately he drops the pretense after Padmé's death, and it's left ambiguous whether he actually knew the ability - and, at least in the films, whether or not it ever existed at all. Anakin, for his part, did realize Palpatine was manipulating him, but went along with it out of inertia and desperation.

*** In a deleted scene, though, they do send probes to check for his body, but Obi-Wan tricks a nearby monster into eating them. The final film also implies that they sent a drone to locate them, as a drone was seen in the background when Obi-Wan hides out in a cave shortly before the scene transitions.

* OdessaSteps: An homage during the Order 66 sequence as Anakin Skywalker, now known as Darth Vader, leads the clone army up the steps of the Jedi Temple to begin the purge.

* OnceIsNotEnough: Obi-Wan decides to leave Anakin behind after chopping off his hands and legs and letting him to catch fire near a lava pit. This has mixed results. [[spoiler:Anakin ends up killing Obi-Wan, the planet Alderaan, and many others as Darth Vader.]]

-->'''Kenobi''': (throwing the blaster away) [[BondOneLiner So uncivilized]].

* OpenSecret: Towards the end of the movie, Obi-Wan bluntly asks Padmé if Anakin is the father of her child in a resigned tone that makes it clear he already knew what the answer would be, and he doesn't even blink when she confirms his suspicion with an ashamed head nod.

* ParallelConflictSequence: There are two more or less simultaneous lightsaber fights during the FinalBattle between Yoda and Palpatine and Obi-Wan vs Anakin/Darth Vader.

* {{Planetville}}: Obi-Wan is told that General Grievous is in the Utapau system, and the first place he lands is the city that Grievous has taken as his headquarters. Anakin tells Padmé that he's going to Mustafar, then she has no trouble at all finding him later. Granted, a combination of the Force and on-ship guidance systems can be (and in the Franchise/StarWarsExpandedUniverse and ''[[Franchise/StarWarsLegends Legends]]'', have been) used to HandWave all of those.

* PleaOfPersonalNecessity: This is the climax of Darth Sidious' quest to corrupt Anakin Skywalker into his apprentice. Mace Windu has him at lightsaberpoint and is about to execute him, so Palpatine plays to his desperate desire to save his wife from death at any cost. [[ForegoneConclusion It works.]]

* PointDefenseless: The ineffectiveness of the point-defense of dedicated warships in the opening is explained by the immense jamming hundreds of warships in a pitched battle are throwing around, but at least they do better than said merchant ships.

* PrecisionCrash: A borderline example at the beginning of the film. Grievous' cruiser falls out of the upper atmosphere, with barely any means of control (and massive chunks breaking off constantly, culminating in the ship breaking in half) and still manages to crash-land at an airstrip. It was not being piloted most of the way down and didn't seem to have any real controls even after Anakin took the helm. Furthermore, it reaches that airstrip ''dead on''.

* PretextForWar: Palpatine completes his takeover by luring the Jedi into coming after him directly and trying to kill him. He decries it as an assassination attempt and a failed coup d'etat on their part, all the justification he needs to brand every Jedi a traitor and mark them for death just as he orchestrates victory in the civil war declares himself Emperor.

* ProphecyTwist: Anakin has a vision in which Padmé dies in childbirth. He falls to the dark side in order to protect her because Darth Sidious promises him the power to save people from death. However, [[SelfFulfillingProphecy it is because of his fall]] that Padmé dies in childbirth, either directly (by strangling her out of his dark-side fueled rage), or indirectly (by causing her to [[DeathByDespair lose the will to live]]) depending on [[DependingOnTheWriter who you ask]]. The fact that Padmé is forced to give birth at a clinic on a remote mining colony due to Anakin's own actions (rather than in a properly facilitated hospital on Coruscant or Naboo) did her no favors, either.
* PsychicStrangle: Shortly before the climax of the movie, when Anakin erroneously thinks Padmé is now siding with Obi-Wan, he applies Force Chocking onto her, which results in her eventual death (luckily, their newborn twin children survive).

This gets ''very'' tragic in ''Film/RevengeOfTheSith'', as the first person Anakin/Vader killed with the Force choke (albeit indirectly) was Padmé, the love of his life, which became ''the'' reason he joined the Dark Side.

* CirclingMonologue: Reversed, somewhat. Anakin circles Palpatine as the latter goads him into doing a FaceHeelTurn.

to:

* CirclingMonologue: Reversed, somewhat. ChaseFight: Halfway through the movie, Obi-Wan battles General Grievous in a fight that begins in a stationary outpost full of droids, but continues across the sorrounding areas while Grievous tries to escape. Much later in the movie, Obi-Wan and Anakin circles have their fateful lightsaber duel across the moving rocks of the lava river in Mustafar. Obi Wan wins both fights, but they hardly feel like victories for him (much less so the second).
* CirclingMonologue:
** Anakin rounds
Palpatine as the latter goads him into calmly and matter-of-factly lays out his motivations and plans, doing a FaceHeelTurn.his best to convince Anakin that [[LoveMakesYouEvil it's best for Padmé.]]
** The same happens between Anakin and Obi-Wan before their fight on Mustafar.

* ClimaxBoss: Obi-Wan vs. General Grievous. The rest of the film has Palpatine putting the final pieces together in his rise to power as Emperor, which includes the clones turning on the Galactic Republic and Anakin fully succumbing to the Dark Side and becoming Darth Vader.
* ClosestThingWeGot: Early in the film, Anakin, Obi-Wan, and Palpatine are trapped on General Grievous's badly damaged ship. Obi-Wan promptly asks Anakin if he's able to fly (or more importantly ''land'') the ship, or what's left of it, to which Anakin immediately replies that given the circumstances, "the ability to pilot this thing is irrelevant". He does manage to pull off a safe, if not exactly elegant, landing.

* ComingInHot: Anakin and Obi-Wan intentionally crash-land in the docking bay of the Invisible Hand to board the ship and rescue the kidnapped Chancellor Palpatine. Not to mention the "Not to worry, we are still flying half a ship," scene shortly after that, when Anakin crash-lands literally "half a ship" after almost burning it to a crisp on its descent through the atmosphere. He even ''says'' "we're coming in too hot!"

to:

* CombatBreakdown: Obi-Wan and Grievous start out their fight on Utapau with a lightsaber duel. After the clone army storms the base, however, both of them lose their lightsabers in the ensuing frenzy, and after a chase scene, they resume their fight with their fists as well as an electrostaff and blaster that they grapple over.
* ComingInHot: Anakin and Obi-Wan intentionally crash-land in the docking bay of the Invisible Hand to board the ship and rescue the kidnapped Chancellor Palpatine. Not to mention And the "Not to worry, we are still flying half a ship," scene shortly after that, comes when Anakin crash-lands literally "half a ship" after almost burning it to a crisp on its descent through the atmosphere. He even ''says'' "we're coming in too hot!"

* ConflictingLoyalty: Anakin Skywalker falls to TheDarkSide when circumstances force him to choose between his loyalty to the Jedi and the need to save Padmé, which Palpatine promises he would be able to do. [[TragicMistake He chooses Padmé]]. He ''finally'' makes the right decision in ''Star Wars Episode VI: Film/ReturnOfTheJedi''.

* ConspicuousConsumption: Chancellor Palpatine's office on Coruscant. It's huge and empty and on a city planet like Coruscant, it would have been mind-numbingly expensive to rent or buy that real estate. It is a subtle display of his wealth and power that he can have a huge office and not need to fill it with anything. The Expanded universe took it even further by revealing that after becoming Emperor he moved into the even ''larger'' and ''more'' empty-yet-decadent Imperial Palace... Which for ''ultimate'' bragging rights used to be the Jedi Temple.

* ContinuousDecompression: General Grievous deliberately shatters a window on his ship to escape from Obi-Wan and Anakin. The Jedi are left clinging for life until some emergency shutters activate, while Grievous (whose life support suit lets him breathe in space) uses a GrapplingHookPistol to climb the outer hull.
* ContrastingSequelSetting: The movie introduces settings that are harsher than those of ''Attack of the Clones'' (whi

* CorneredRattlesnake: By the time of this movie, General Grievous is a famed coward, and retreats as soon as things fall out of favour. When Obi-Wan sabotages his escape, however, he continues to fend him off, [[NotSoHarmlessVillain actually leaving the Jedi on the defence for a while as he begins knocking and throwing him around like a rag doll.]]

* CreatingLife: Chancellor Palpatine makes a claim that the Sith Lord Darth Plagueis had the ability to create life.
* CreatingLifeIsBad: -->'''Palpatine:''' Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith so powerful and so wise, he could use the Force to influence the midi-chlorians to create... ''life.'' He had such a knowledge of the Dark Side, he could even keep the ones he cared about from ''dying''.\\
'''Anakin:''' He could actually... save people from death?\\
'''Palpatine:''' The Dark Side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural.
* CrewOfOne: Anakin and Obi-Wan take control of a [[http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Invisible_Hand modified Providence-class destroyer]] and landing it entirely on their own. The whole scene is more PlayedForLaughs than any of the above, however, considering the ship is literally breaking apart as they're flying it.

* CynicismCatalyst: The fear of the loss of Padmé Amidala [[DeathByChildbirth by childbirth]] is what drives Anakin Skywalker over the edge to TheDarkSide. For extra irony, [[SelfFulfillingProphecy she dies from childbirth because she loses her desire to live after seeing the monster Anakin becomes in trying to prevent her death]].

* DangerousTerrain: The lava rivers in Mustafar where Anakin loses his limbs.

* DeathIsDramatic:
** Despite being shown to be [[PowerCreepPowerSeep almost as powerful as Yoda]] in ''Film/AttackOfTheClones'', Count Dooku is killed off after a brief fight against Anakin at the start of this movie.
** The death of General Grievous is also rather abrupt, considering his highly competent combat skills as shown in supplementary media, including his debut in ''WesternAnimation/StarWarsCloneWars'' (where he killed many Jedi).
* DeathlyDiesIrae: ''Dies Irae'' is heard repeatedly during [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2p-im7cxa4 Anakin's Betrayal]], the execution of Order 66 and the slaying of the Jedi.

* DeathlyDiesIrae: ''Dies Irae'' is heard repeatedly DegradedBoss:
** In ''Film/AttackOfTheClones'',
during [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m2p-im7cxa4 Anakin's Betrayal]], the execution chase scene with Obi-Wan and Jango in the asteroid field, Jango launches a missile at Obi-Wan's ship, which is treated like a terrifying, nearly inescapable weapon. Obi-Wan is chased for a good minute before he gets lucky and manages to destroy it by tricking it to fly between two huge asteroids. But in this film, Anakin and Obi-Wan are flying in a space battle and FOUR of Order 66 those same missiles come after them, and they act like they are no big deal and destroy them in about fifteen seconds just by [[SpectacularSpinning SPINNING]].
** In the previous film, Count Dooku was the strongest opponent Obi-Wan and Anakin faced,
and the slaying latter two were almost killed by him. Meanwhile, in ''WesternAnimation/StarWarsTheCloneWars'' (which was originally conceived as an interquel between ''Attack of the Jedi.Clones'' and ''Revenge of the Sith''), General Grievous proved to be a lethal combatant who killed all the Jedi who challenged him minus one, and also succeeded at kidnapping Palpatine. And indeed, in their respective debuts Dooku and Grievous get away undefeated. However, they're killed off unceremoniously in ''Revenge of the Sith'' itself, with Dooku being defeated during the starter arc involving the rescue of Palpatine, and Grievous being impaled by Obi-Wan after trying to flee from him. Tellingly, shortly after Grievous is gotten rid of, the movie reveals the ''real'' threats: The aforementioned Palpatine (who outs himself as a Sith Lord) and Anakin (who joins the Dark Side).

* DestroyTheVillainsWeapon: Mace Windu sends Darth Sidious scrambling when he manages to knock the Sith Lord's lightsaber out the window (in some adaptations, he cuts it in half as well). Unfortunately, Sidious also has some [[ShockAndAwe built-in weaponry]].
* DestructiveRomance: As sweet as it can be at times, Anakin and Padmé's relationship wasn't healthy. When you have two people trained from a ''very'' young age to live a life of nothing but duty, and essentially forbid them normal, healthy relationships, there's no way it can end in anything but this trope. It's especially bad for Anakin because this prohibition is one of the seeds that would lead him to TheDarkSide when he becomes obsessed with protecting her at any cost. After Anakin turns to the Dark Side in this film, the relationship becomes blatantly abusive – he twists the truth or just straight-up lies to Padmé to cover up his crimes, starts treating her more like a possession than his wife and lashes out at her with the Force, ultimately causing her death. Anakin is [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone horrified]] at this once he comes to his senses, but by then it's too late.

* DiseasedName: Darth Plagueis is Sith Lord mentioned who was obsessed with finding the key to immortality. Palpatine tells Anakin Skywalker that Darth Plagueis became so powerful that he was able to create life by influencing the midi-chlorians, and had the power to save people from dying. Plagueis was killed in his sleep by his apprentice.

to:

* DiscOneFinalBoss: Count Dooku (who was the final opponent in ''Attack of the Clones'') and General Grievous (who was in the animated ''Clone Wars'' mini-series) are only in-the-way threats for the first half of this film, with the former being killed in the first 20 minutes.

Plagueis was killed in his sleep by his apprentice. apprentice.
* DismembermentIsCheap: Anakin has his legs and left arm removed by Obi Wan, and is later treated with prosthetic replacements during his visual transition to Darth Vader. However, the process is shown to be very grueling to him.

* DividedWeFall: Palpatine's plotting throughout the Prequel Trilogy culminates with separating the heroes in this movie, with Obi-Wan and Yoda going offworld on different missions and Padme standing in opposition to the Republic's increasing authoritarianism, leaving Anakin isolated from the people that care about him, thereby falling to the Dark Side of the Force and becoming Darth Vader.
* DoABarrelRoll: Anakin uses a snap-roll to make two missiles on his tail crash into each other.

* DontMakeMeDestroyYou: Happens ''twice''. Anakin, knowing he is the ChosenOne, says "Don't make me kill you", but at the end of that duel, [[GeoEffects Obi-Wan has the high ground]] and realizes that Anakin is about to do something really stupid in his blind rage. Obi-Wan's reply? "Don't try it," in an exasperated, almost pleading tone.

* DownerBeginning: The film starts with the Clone Wars at their worst and no end in sight. "The Republic is crumbling", as the text says.

* DyingDeclarationOfHate: After Obi-Wan defeats Anakin/Vader in a duel (cutting off Anakin/Vader's legs and non-cybernetic arm and leaving him very close to a large pool of lava), Anakin/Vader's reaction to Obi-Wan's lecture about his failures as TheChosenOne is the enraged scream "I HATE YOU!" To which Obi-Wan (already heartbroken from the whole situation) shouts back "[[WeUsedToBeFriends You were my brother, Anakin!]] I ''loved'' you!" [[ForegoneConclusion Anakin/Vader survives of course]], but Obi-Wan initially thought he was going to die back there.

* EliteAgentsAboveTheLaw: The Jedi Order is portrayed as an NGOSuperpower of sorts: an independent paramilitary organization that is allied to the Republic, enforcing its laws and keeping the peace, but only really answers to its own Jedi Council. According to this movie, the Council really doesn't like it when the civilian government of the Republic tries to insert itself in what it sees as purely Jedi affairs. During the Clone Wars, the Military Creation Act changes this status by legally appointing Jedi assigned to the war effort as senior officers of the Grand Army of the Republic.
* EliteMooks: General Grievous' Magna Guards, non-Jedi droids who are able to fight against Jedi in melee combat and do relatively well (i.e. live longer than about 6 or 7 seconds).
* EndingMemorialService: Part of the ending montage is the funeral procession for [[spoiler:Padmé]].

* EnvironmentalSymbolism: The climatic duel between Obi-Wan and Anakin on a lava planet.

to:

The climatic duel between Obi-Wan and Anakin on a lava planet.planet. The eruptions are about Anakin's state of mind and him bursting into flames was about his final transformation. And when he is defeated, he is cast down into the flames.
** Yoda and Palpatine's final duel takes place in the grand Senate Chamber. The battle for the fate of the galaxy takes place at its heart; and many of the senator's pods (the very symbol of democracy) are smashed in the duel.

* EverybodysDeadDave: All of the (appearing onscreen) Jedi are killed except for Yoda and Obi-Wan.

* EvilHasABadSenseOfHumor: Palpatine tells Anakin the "Tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise", which is a ''very'' abbreviated version of the story told in the novel ''Literature/DarthPlagueis'', which is released later. By reading the novel, one understands that when Palpatine called Plagueis by that title, it was more than anything else, his ''very'' twisted idea of a joke.

* ExactEavesdropping: Averted, unlike in the previous film. Obi-Wan sneaks around, but happens upon the separatists just too late to hear Grievous telling the others where they will be hiding next. Of course, this time it's important for the plot that he ''doesn't'' get to know it yet.

* ExecutiveSuiteFight: The confrontation of Mace Windu and his Jedi vs. Palpatine and Anakin take place in the Chancellor's office. Although surprisingly little expensive artwork is damaged in the fight, it does feature the easily-breakable window [[spoiler:which Mace is blown through in a display of [[LargeHam UNLIMITED POWER]] by Palpatine]].

* ExplosiveInstrumentation: A battle droid on the bridge of the ''Invisible Hand'' gets killed by an exploded panel.
* ExtremelyShortTimespan: The major part of the movie takes place over three days.

* FearfulSymmetry: In the climatic final battle, there are a fair number of moments where [[StudentAndMasterTeam Obi-Wan and Anakin]] mirror each other's movements perfectly, complete with a Force-push BeamOWar which sends them each flying in opposite directions. At one point, they can even be seen using each others' lightsabers, though the part of the duel where they disarmed each other and retrieved the other's lightsaber to keep fighting was cut.

* FinalSolution:FinalSolution: The culmination of Palpatine's master plan is Order 66, an order to every Clone Trooper to kill all the Jedi, resulting in the Great Jedi Purge.

* FinalSpeech: Padme doesn't get much of one, just saying her children's names before she kicks off from being killed by the plot/script.

** Anakin uses a pretty cool-looking one on Dooku, sliding his own blade under his and chopping off both of his hands.
** Obi-Wan uses a particularly brutal one on Anakin when he tries to jump over him, chopping off both his legs and his left arm in one swift motion.
** Mace Windu defeats Palpatine with a swift boot to the face, knocking him backwards and causing him to drop his lightsaber which goes flying out the window.

However, right before he deals the final blow on him, Anakin chops his right arm, which allows Palpatine to use Force Lightning for a deadly comeback that costs Windu's life.
** After a well-aimed shot at Grievous' biomechanical heart, Obi-Wan tops him off with two more shots, incinerating him from inside. Also, during the movie's climax, he uses a particularly brutal strike on Anakin when he tries to jump over him, chopping off both his legs and his left arm in one swift motion.

* FiveStagesOfGrief: Obi-Wan Kenobi goes through the five stages after Anakin Skywalker turns to the Dark Side of the Force:
** Denial: Obi-Wan is so shocked when he sees holographic footage of Anakin participating in Order 66's attack against the Jedi Temple, then bowing before Emperor Palpatine/Darth Sidious, that he asks Yoda to turn it off.
** Anger: When Anakin force-chokes Padme on Mustafar, [[TranquilFury Obi-Wan firmly and angrily implores Anakin to stop]].
** Bargaining: As he duels with Anakin, he still pleads with Anakin to see he's falling to the Dark Side.
** Depression: After seriously injuring Anakin, Obi-Wan is devastated to see how his friend has fallen.
--->'''Obi-Wan:''' You were the chosen one! It was said that you would destroy the Sith, not join them! Bring balance to the Force, not leave it in darkness! You were my brother, Anakin! I loved you!
** Acceptance: The movie ends with Obi-Wan accepting that Anakin has turned to the Dark Side, and also accepting his new place watching over Anakin's son, Luke, on Tatooine.
* FlauntingYourFleets: Right in the opening moments of the movie, we see not one but ''two'' sides flaunting their numbers (with a little scuffle in the middle).

* FlingALightIntoTheFuture: This happens to Luke, Leia, Yoda, Obi-Wan, and the whole proto-rebellion at the end of the movie. Obi-Wan and Yoda go into exile, the twins are sent to adoptive families in secret, and the rebellious senators vote FOR the newly christened Emperor.
* FloatingWater: The Mon Calamari opera dance witnessed by Anakin and Palpatine during their talk about the legend of Darth Plagueis.

* ForceFieldDoor: Seen when Anakin blasts the force-field generator over a Separatist battleship's hangar bay and air starts rushing out until a physical door closes over it.
