* GoodVictimsBadVictims: Invoked. When Andrew is suing his former firm for AIDS discrimination and bring up a woman working at the firm who also had AIDS, Andrew's former co-workers express their sympathy for her, pointing out the fact that she had contracted HIV from a blood transfusion. However, they not-so-subtly blame Andrew for his illness, given that he is gay and contracted HIV from an unsafe sexual encounter with a stranger he met at an adult theater.

* FairForItsDay: Inverted, in that the film's main flaw is that Beckett is pretty much sanctified simply for having Aids.
** Played straight in how it's gay ButNotTooGay. It was still a huge step forward for queers in the media.

''Philadelphia'' is notable as one of the first big Hollywood movies to bring up the subject of AIDS, and TomHanks got his first Oscar for playing the leading role in it. {{YMMV}} on how it has passed the test of time, however.

* SoundtrackDissonance: Playing BruceSpringsteen's "Streets of Philadelphia", while presenting the city in an almost idyllic way.
** He showed ALL the parts of the city - not just the bright, shiny downtown, a homeless encampment, the poor areas, the urban blight and decay. Philadelphia in all its aspects.

Take that somewhere else, no "this troper" allowed.

** YMVM. ** This troper was shocked but extremely happy that his family loved him and viewed him as the same person he was before sexuality ever entered the picture (their son, brother, uncle, etc). They didn't seem that close to his lover but they were never subtly or overtly unwelcoming of him. And the fact that his sister let him hold her baby with no freaking was something this troper had thought would never be seen in real life, let alone a movie. Granted, this troper has now met people who do have a better understanding of HIV and AIDs and would treat someone with a positive status as a normal human, but at the time, such an idea was radical. And honestly, still, even with the strides made, kinda is.
