* ElementalMotifs: Water, in the form of rain. Everything goes belly-up for the Kim family on a raining night, they come home to see their house flooded on account of the rain, [[spoiler:tensions begin to boil over due to the Parks actually being thankful for the rain giving them a clear day, and Ki-woo leaves his scholar stone in a river. On a metaphorical level, water never goes up, only down; the lower class have next-to-nope hope of rubbing shoulders with the upper class, and the Kims' attempts to leave them worse off than they were before.]]

** The most notable is [[spoiler: Da-song's encounter with a ghost, peering over the edge of the stairs at him and sending him into a panicked seizure. It is in fact Geun-se, Moon-gwang's husband, who has been hiding in the basement and came up looking for food. When the flashback actually occurs, the audience knows of the couple's secret, and realize how close the Parks came to realizing they had squatters in the privacy of their home.]]
** The second, much earlier one, is [[spoiler: Moon-gwang trying to push the cover to the secret bunker, which takes so much exertion she had to brace herself ''with both feet on the wall'' to do so. It's an incredibly jarring image, and the reaction of first-time viewers may be of the consideration she's non-human because of how unnatural it initially looks before they realize the logistics. The sheer desperation and intensity of Moon-gwang's actions then become more flooring.]]

*** [[spoiler: At the film's end, Ki-Woo places it in a river among several other rocks, and it instantly becomes indistinguishable. It's easy to see this as reflective of the fact that the Kims are just one part of a great collective with hollow hopes and schemes, the lower class, and that they blew their chance to stand out from that collective due to their greed and overreaching.]]

* GreedMakesYouDumb: The FatalFlaw of the Kim family. After Kim Ki-woo manages to get the poor family some money by being an English tutor for the Park Family, he enacts a scheme where he has the Parks unknowingly hire the Kim family for various jobs. The family had already achieved their goals after all four of them are hired by the Parks in well-paying jobs, but they just can't help but want even more. Their pursuit of money and laxness end up becoming their undoing however, [[spoiler:where they're caught red-handed partying in the Park mansion by Moon-gwang and Geun-sae, leading to the tragic birthday party. This includes the death of Kim Ki-jeong, with Kim Ki-taek fleeing from the authorities after murdering Park Dong-ik in a fit of rage, the latter forced to live in the secret bunker of the basement of the Park mansion, like Geun-se before him. By the end of the film, the Kim family lost Ki-jeong along with their newfound wealth, Ki-taek is stuck living in the bunker below the Parks' home forever to avoid being imprisoned, with the remaining Kim Ki-woo having the TragicDream of trying to buy the mansion back in order to save his father]].
** The film contrasts the Kim family's greed with the more passive and pervasive greed of the Parks, who [[RichInDollarsPoorInSense lives of abundance and luxury without ever thinking of people beyond themselves]]. [[spoiler:They end up losing their family patriarch, Park Dong-ik, and possibly son, Park Da-song, after a fatal stabbing and seizure respectively, and are forced to move out of the mansion]].

* BlackComedy: The first half of the movie is rich with this one, ranging from Ki-jeong deliberately putting her own panties in the Park family's car to make it seem that their driver likes having car sex in his own employer's car, to Ki-jeong fooling Yeon-kyo with faux artistic lessons. At least until the CerebusSyndrome kicks in. There's black comedy in the second half too, like a dog licking some sausages on a skewer which is [[spoiler:sticking out of a dead guy]].

** At one point, Mrs. Park recounts to Mrs. Kim how her son got a seizure after encountering a ghost on his birthday. While Mrs. Park believes there is a ghost in her house, the viewers and Mrs. Kim already know that [[spoiler:said ghost is actually Geun-se looking for a meal.]]

* StinkSnub: The Kim family all shares a similar smell due to their living conditions. In the first part of the movie it's treated as a minor footnote to address as part of their masquerade. However after overhearing the Parks discuss his smell in-depth, Ki-taek becomes very aware of their subtle responses to him.
