The first role is that of Norbit Albert Rice. The film opens with a joke concerning Norbit's parents throwing him to the curb from the door of a car as a baby. Norbit grows up in an orphanage, which is run by an [[JapaneseRanguage Asian character who cannot pronounce "L"]] (also played by Eddie Murphy). He falls in love with fellow orphan Kate Thomas (Creator/ThandieNewton) and the two, as children, eventually pretend to marry each other with candy rings under a tree. The two are separated when she is adopted. Not long afterward, Norbit meets Murphy's other role; self-centered, domineering [[FatBastard Fat Bitch]] Rasputia Latimore, who comes from a family of black racketeers. Norbit wallows in misery married to her, until Kate turns up one day. Kate as it happens, is engaged to sneaky, slick-talking businessman Deion Hughes (Cuba Gooding Jr). But Norbit is not to be dissuaded, and he starts aiming to edge away from Rasputia and win Kate back.

* AcademyAward: Believe it or not, the film received an Oscar nomination, albeit for Best Makeup. (given that Rick Baker did the make up, this isn't that hard to believe.) So technically, we could refer to it as "The AcademyAward-nominated ''Norbit''." (At the ceremony, host Creator/JonStewart noted: "Even Norbit got a nomination, which I think is great. Too often the Academy ignores movies that aren't good.") Fortunately, the only trophies it collected were Murphy's three [=Razzies=].

* ThisIsGonnaSuck: Norbit when he gets home from his date with Kate and Rasputia's brother tells him, "I'd hate to be you now".

* MsFanservice: Though literally eclipsed by the disservice of Rasputia, there are some nice scenes with ThandieNewton.

* WeaksauseWeakness: Rasputia has proven to be a total tank that not even a crowd of people can stop her. What finally does? [[spoiler: A spear thrown into her ass by Mr. Wong which sends her running like a chicken.]]

* ParentalAbandonment: Norbit's parents dropped him off at the orphanage by throwing him out of the car.....without stopping it or even slowing down.....and laughing as they drove away.
* PlotHole: Sevrel audience members had to question why Norbit stayed with Raspustia after [[spoiler: finding out she lied about being pregnant.]] That was the only reason he was staying with her so why didn't he just go.

* BadassGrandpa: Mr. Wong, the orphanage owner. When Rasputia's brothers try to take his orphanage and threaten him, he leaps up onto the table wielding a ''harpoon'' and is about the only one in town they're afraid of (besides their sister). Wong is also known to fearlessly and frequently insult Rasputia face-to-face whenever they meet, something the townspeople and her brothers, won't even dare doing. [[spoiler: In the end, he defeats Rasputia by harpooning her in the "blow hole".]]

* BadassGrandpa: Mr. Wong, the orphanage owner. When Rasputia's brothers try to take his orphanage and threaten him, he leaps up onto the table wielding a ''harpoon'' and is about the only one in town they're afraid of (besides their sister). Wong is also known to outright insult Rasputia, something the townspeople, as well as her brothers, are afraid of doing. [[spoiler: In the end, he defeats Rasputia by harpooning her in the "blow hole".]]

''Norbit'' was a commercial success but the film was [[CriticalDissonance blasted by critics]], largely for its [[BlackComedy subject matter]], and Murphy picked up three [[GoldenRaspberryAward [=Razzies=]]] for his various performances. Murphy had been considered a lock to win an Oscar for his role in {{Dreamgirls}} the same year; when [[AwardSnub he lost]], many suggested the release of ''Norbit'' during the balloting process was to blame.

Bonus points for [[CoolOldLady Mrs. Henderson]] [[HandbagOfHurt swinging purses around]] and going [[NeverMessWithGranny "BRING IT, BITCHES!"]]

* EvilLaugh: Rasputia did one after she maimed Lloyd the pug [[spoiler:and another one during Kate and Deion's wedding, when Norbit initially failed to expose Deion's unscrupulousness]].

* AbuseIsOkayWhenItsFemaleOnMale: Throughout the film, Rasputia abuses Norbit both physically and emotionally. Although [[TheWoobie we're supposed to feel sorry for him]], most of the abuse is [[PlayedForLaughs played for laughs]]. [[DoubleStandard But if the genders were reversed]], then it would be a different story...
