After the death of her husband, Leslie Doyle (Creator/DeniseCrosby) has moved her children, Jonathan (Dan Byrd) and Jamie (Stephanie Patton), to the other side of the country, to take over a small town's mortuary, the Fowler Mortuary. The building is a wreck, Jonathan is engaged in teenage rebellion, and the dead are rising from their graves. Needless to say, this wasn't the best moving experience.

Cleaning up aversions.

* CreepyMortician: Largely averted. Leslie is upbeat and businesslike about her job.
* GayGuyDiesFirst: Largely averted. Several characters die before Grady, and although he's the first of the main group of characters to die, it's late in the film.

* CreepyCemetery: The mortuary is conveniently adjacent to the city's cemetery, which is crowded with old graves and a crypt that won't stay closed.
* CreepyMortician: Largely averted. Leslie is upbeat and businesslike about her job.

* MadwomanInTheAttic: Bobby Fowler was born deformed, and locked away by his parents before he disappeared, and they died a few years later. He's become a local legend, and indeed never completely left the grounds.
* OurZombiesAreDifferent: They're powered by black mold, and are largely just jerkily moving humans.
* SaltSolution: Salt makes the zombies melt away. [[spoiler:Unfortunately, it seems the effect is temporary]].
* {{Shoutout}}: Bobby Fowler's tomb is adorned with a famous quote from Creator/HPLovecraft's "Literature/TheCallOfCthulhu":

* TheVirus: The black mold/gunk seems to be able to turn people into evil zombie versions of themselves.
