* ShownTheirWork: The movie is notable for portraying Spinosaurus as a close relative of Baryonyx and Suchomimus, to the point of sharing their crocodile-like heads. This would cement future depictions of Spinosaurus and finally put the old "sail-backed carnosaur" portrait to rest (although the film's depiction would also become outdated when later discoveries show that Spinosaurus also had shorter hindlegs, a dip in the sail, and a finned tail).

* AmicableExes: Grant and Sattler have split up since the first film but are still very close friends. And apart from a few barbs traded early on, Paul and Amanda are actually pretty cordial with one another, though that's justified as they're working together to get their son back alive.

** are very caring and friendly with each other. Granted, they and they do have an important common purpose, but given the stressful circumstances, one would expect them to get on each other's nerves at some point and show some signs of resentment. Instead, there are strong hints that they will get back together.

Grant and Sattler have split up since the first film but are still very close friends. And apart from a few barbs traded early on, Paul and Amanda are actually pretty cordial with one another, though that's justified as they're working together to get their son back alive.

* AnkleDrag: Nash the pilot gets dragged out of the crashed plane by his leg by the Spinosaurus before being thrown to the ground, stomped on, and decapitated.

* ArtisticLicenseBiology: Eric has a flask of Tyrannosaurus urine, which helps ward off smaller predators. The urine is yellow and watery like mammalian urine, but, as reptiles, dinosaurs probably did not have liquid urine, more likely secreting a whitish uric paste like modern birds and most reptiles do.

** This can be HandWaved by assuming it was just really cloudy, and not actually night. Especially since it's late afternoon and the sun is setting in the scenes not long after.

* BarrierBustingBlow: There's one that doesn't end with the heroes captured: the humans go through a hole in a fence, and then the Spinosaurus just smashes through it. And yet once the heroes close a laboratory door on him, it surprisingly withstands the enormous dino charging at it.

* BiggerIsBetter[=/=]EvilIsBigger: Spinosaurus is made into one of the main threats in the film thanks to its size -- larger than the T. rex.

to:

* BiggerIsBetter[=/=]EvilIsBigger: BiggerIsBetter: Spinosaurus is made into one of the main threats in the film thanks to its size -- larger than the T. rex.rex.
* BloodlessCarnage:
** The infamous fight between the Spinosaurus and the Tyrannosaurus. Despite being a vicious battle to the death between two massive carnivores biting at each other, there's hardly any blood, and the Spinosaurus kills the T. rex simply by snapping its neck rather than actually causing any wounds.
** is brutally mauled near-death by a Velociraptor. It uses both this and GoryDiscretionShot, and in the end he looks no more injured than he did before the attack. Then the raptor kills him by snapping his neck, which, again, is an easy way to kill something without any actual blood.

* CellPhonesAreUseless: Averted. The protagonists spend a good deal of time chasing after a satellite phone instead. Any cell phones that they might have had would have been useless; they were on an island far from any towers. This is mixed with a BehindTheBlack moment, when they hear the sound of the phone but not the freaking huge dinosaur approaching in whose stomach the phone is. Clearly, the phone is quite louder than the dinosaur itself!

* CreatingLifeIsBad: Compared to previous films (which already endorsed this trope to a major extent) this one drives the point home even farther, with Alan Grant having transformed into a sarcastic, somewhat bitter man due to his prior experience in the Park. He calls the dinosaurs "genetically engineered theme-park monsters" and calls the scientists out for playing God.
-->Amanda Kirby: This is how you make dinosaurs?\\
Dr. Alan Grant: No. This is how you play God.

* CurbStompCushion: During the infamous T. Rex vs. Spinosaurus fight, the T. Rex actually manages to knock the Spinosaurus back at first and even bites down on into the Spinosaurus's neck before getting its own neck snapped.

* EmergingFromTheShadows: A variant. A Pteranodon approaches Eric Kirby whilst surrounded by OminousFog.
* EscapedAnimalRampage: A flock of Pteranodons escapes from their cage and are shown flying into the sunset at the end. The promotional material for the next film reveals that they were shot down over Canada, presumably due to this trope.
* EveryManHasHisPrice: Like in the first film, Alan Grant can accept a job if the offered money makes it worthy. In this case, Paul Kirby basically offers him a blank check to be his tour guide on a flight over Isla Sorna. There's a contrast from the first film, however: While Hammond's offer back then is apparently sincere,

* ExtraLongEpisode: Inverted. The previous two movies, as well as the subsequent three, last 120 minutes on average. This one only lasts 92.

** Of course, it also cuts both ways. After all, Grant and Billy didn't do any background research on Paul Kirby and Kirby Enterprises before or after their first meeting. If they had, the jig would've been up far sooner.

* HistoricalBadassUpgrade: The real Spinosaurus, despite being huge and powerful, was probably quite slow on land. Also, while it was bigger (at least in terms of length, and probably weight and height) than Tyrannosaurus, T. rex was likely much faster on foot, had a stronger bite, and can tear apart flesh. Here, it's depicted as the ultimate superpredator who eats T. rexes for breakfast. They also enhanced Spinosaurus in terms of durability; it easily breaks out of a T. rex bite to the neck in the opening moments of their fight, and is not in the least hampered by the wound. In reality, such a bite would've been crippling, if not fatal to pretty much anything.
** A case of AuthorOnBoard, as the paleontological consultant was rather contemptuous of the popular notion of the T. rex as the apex predator of dinosaurs, and used the film in part to advance his own pick for that slot.
** And thanks to certain revelations in Film/JurassicWorld, it's possible that this was invoked by [=InGen=] if they made Spinosaurus as .

* MonsterDelay: While a talking dream version of a raptor appears on the plane ride to Isla Sorna, real raptors don't show up until about the midpoint of its runtime, and this trope is actually uncharacteristically averted with both the Spinosaurus and the T. rex as they come pretty abruptly onto the scene during the frantic first few scenes on the island, but the Spinosaurus at the very least is only given brief glimpses at first until it rises up to roar at the survivors in the airplane after eating Nash.

It is also the shortest film in the saga by a wide margin, lasting only 92 minutes instead of sometime around 120 like the other films.

* RaptorAttack: The movie gives raptors some color -- to the male raptors, anyway. Somewhat justified, in that the first and second films' raptors were female, or, thanks to faulty DNA hybridization to fill in the damaged strands, changed to males.

* SpinosaurusVersusTRex: The iconic fight between the two superpredators is the TropeMaker. Shortly after their arrival on Isla Sorna, the Spinosaurus attacks the plane of Dr. Allan Grant and his group, and then starts pursuing them through the jungle. Dr. Grant and the others eventually bump into a Tyrannosaurus, which decides to chase them as well. When the two gigantic theropods are brought face to face, they roar defiantly and charge at each other to have a fight. The T. rex is the first to strike, biting its opponent's neck and putting it to the ground. However, after a brief struggle the Spino manages to get up and free itself, knocking down a few trees in the process, and snaps at its adversary. Then, the two dinosaurs try to bite eack other's flanks, and the Spino strikes the T. rex[='=]s leg with its claws. The Tyrannosaurus retaliates by headbutting the Spino, pushing it forward, but the Spinosaurus takes the opportunity to out-maneuver the T. rex and bite its neck. It proceeds to use its jaws and arms to twist its rival's neck, killing it instantly. The dead body of the Tyrannosaurus tumbles to the ground, and the Spinosaurus places its hands on it before making a triumphant roar.

* TimeSkip: The movie is not given a set time period, but it happens after The Lost World. Ellie Sattler has been married for some time and has two children.

* ATragedyOfImpulsiveness: Dr. Grant's assistant, Billy Brennan, steals Velociraptor eggs, planning to sell them on the mainland in the hopes of getting funding to keep his and Alan's dig site going. He even admits he took the eggs on an impulse; as a result, the raptors end up chasing the group down and killing Udesky. When Alan finds out, he wastes no time giving Billy a WhatTheHellHero, especially after he claims he did it "with the best intentions."
-->Alan: Some of the worst things imaginable have been done with the best intentions. You know what, Billy? As far as I'm concerned, you're no better than the people that built this place.

* UnpleasantAnimalCounterpart: This movie is responsible for portraying Spinosaurus in a villainous light, in contrast to the more noble portrayed Tyrannosaurus.

* TheWorfEffect: The T. rex suffers from this. Its species were portrayed as the biggest and baddest creatures, and now one is easily defeated by the Spinosaurus. Of course, there's a lot of debate about how this scenario would play out in RealLife, though. Pretty much everybody agrees that Spinosaurus would need to dodge when T. rex went for its neck rather than just no selling, though. This is partly RealLifeWritesThePlot, as the fight was intended to be much longer and more even, but the Spinosaurus animatronic was a newer model than the T. rex one and far stronger than expected, resulting in it literally ripping the T. rex animatronic's head off in a single swipe. So ironically, TheWorfEffect was due to a real life example of this trope happening with the animatronics.

** During the above mentioned battle, the T.rex manages to get in the first blow by biting the Spinosaurus neck and dragging it to the ground. Eric: [nods] I don't know. It was Anvilicious kinda preachy. And too much Chaos. Everything Chaos. It just seemed like the guy was high on himself.\\

Deleted Scene is Trivia.

* RealLifeWritesThePlot: The infamous Spinosaurus vs T. rex fight was intended to be much longer and more even than it ultimately was, but had to be cut short to its current length and quick end when the Spinosaurus animatronic, a newer model than the T. rex (which was repurposed from the previous film), turned out to be much stronger than anticipated. As a result, it ended up decapitating the T. rex animatronic in one swipe This is the DeletedScene from the trailer that shows the Spino dealing a hefty BitchSlap to the Rex, in case you're wondering. , forcing the fight to be massively shortened.

* OminousWalk: The first Pteranodon pulls a brief one at the beginning of the sequence it appears in. Simply put, the creature is surrounded by fog when it does this, and is slowly striding its way toward a thirteen-year-old boy. No one can blame said boy for screaming. Bonus points for the fact that an animal known for its flying prowess is introduced by walking menacingly.

** The plan to use the riverboat to navigate to the coast and possibly the mainland is how Malcolm, Thorne, and company escaped from Isla Sorna at the end of Literature/TheLostWorld1995. Likewise, Billy swiping dinosaur eggs to take to the mainland for study and funding is a whole plot reference to Dodgson's plan in the same novel.

** Access to Isla Sorna has been restricted by the American and Costa Rican governments in the interim since The Lost World. Considering what happened in San Diego or what takes place the world over two-3 films later, you can't blame them for trying to prevent any more dinosaurs from getting off the island (or to prevent anyone from trying to sneak back in and acquire more specimens).

When it appeared in III, it was thought of as just another one of [=InGen=]'s cloned dinosaurs that went loose after the abandonment of the breeding facility, deadlier yes, but still a normal dinosaur (relatively speaking). However, the official website of World implies it to be [[spoiler: one of the hybrid projects that Dr. Wu created in cooperation with Hoskins, and with the Spinosaurus being a prototype of sorts for the Indominus rex. Specifically, hybrids that are designed to be much more powerful and intelligent than normal dinosaurs. This is probably why it goes through so much trouble in hunting the humans, and why that poor Tyrannosaurus gets killed so easily. ** The UnmasquedWorld has also kneecappped the Palentology field and funding for Grant and other diggers. After all, with actual ressurected and living dinosurs now living on Sorna, who needs to go digging for fossils anymore?
** On the flip side of this, it could be argued tha the reason paleontology hasn't been completely nixed already and Grant still even has a job is because just enough people realize how utterly dangerous it would be to study live dinosaurs, ones that were genetically recreated and might not even be behaving accurately to their forerunners at that. Especially after what happened in San Diego four years ago.
