Creator/RogerMoore became the third actor to star as Bond in as many films (after Lazenby's single outing and Connery's encore). He had already made a name playing a charming, debonair playboy on television with Series/TheSaint; to avoid getting typecast, he had the writers of his films shift in a more comedic and campier style. The result was a Bond who was a lot funnier, but somewhat less believable as an action hero.

Following Roger Moore's retirement, the field was narrowed down to three candidates: Creator/TimothyDalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Creator/SamNeill, who divided the producers down the middle and thus was unable to secure the role. Brosnan's pre-existing commitments to Series/RemingtonSteele got in the way, and thus we got Timothy Dalton -- the obverse of Moore, focusing more on the GrayAndGreyMorality of the character. Comparisons to Creator/MichaelKeaton's performance in the contemporary Film/1989 were made, in both positive and negative lights.

Creator/DanielCraig's films served as a period of major re-invention for the franchise. What's The Man in the Iron Mask doing here? Possibly pasted here instead of the trope's page by mistake?

* Film/TheManInTheIronMask1977 has King Louis [=XIV=] playing a croquet match with one of his ministers. While the King chats up the ladies, the minister lines up his shot. An aide inquires, "You can make this [wicket], surely?" The minister quietly replies, "And risk another royal tantrum? I shall miss by a league." Although croquet equipment isn't elaborate or expensive, it does require a large, level and manicured lawn, which only the French nobility possessed at the time.

to:

As with the books, the movies tend to be episodic and low on continuity. Every film has at least one "Bond Girl," who will provide some combination of casual romantic dalliance (Bond is TheCharmer), DistressedDamsel, helper and motivator; while Bond ReallyGetsAround, he doesn't typically do relationships, and in over 60 years of continuity has only developed genuine emotional connections three times. However, he does have an ArchEnemy, Ernst Stavro Blofeld, who runs the NebulousEvilOrganization SPECTRE, and a Lancer in the form of CIA Agent Felix Leiter on the occasions when he drops in. He also has a CastHerd who show up in most films: M, DaChief of MI-6; Q, the Quartermaster and GadgeteerGenius who preps Bond for his next mission; and Moneypenny, M's SexySecretary whom Bond constantly flirts with for fun. The main constant is Bond himself: TheAce, TheCharmer, The DeadpanSnarker, The RenaissanceMan, The ManOfWealthAndTaste, The OneManArmy... The ProfessionalKiller, The SociopathicHero, TheAlcoholic, The Orphan, the man who can always find women but can never find love. Which of these traits are pushed to the forefront will depend on the tone of the movie in question.

Creator/SeanConnery was the first actor to play James Bond in a theatrical film production, and set the bar high: while the producers first sought the suave, elegant type (Creator/CaryGrant, Creator/DavidNiven), they instead settled on the tall, sexy and laconic Connery... and both a movie star and a franchise were born. * Sequel: The Creator/DanielCraig Bond films put much emphasis on continuity, unlike the previous StandaloneEpisode Bond films. Film/QuantumOfSolace picks up where Film/2006 left off, Film/Spectre explore explored plot threads left from Film/Skyfall and Film/NoTimeToDie does the same with Spectre. Skyfall can be watched as a standalone meanwhile, standalone, but it's still Spectre brought back it into the continuity with Spectre.continuity.

* SequelEscalation: Sometimes inverted (Film/Moonraker > Film/ForYourEyesOnly and Film/DieAnotherDay > Film/CasinoRoyale2006), but usually the movies get bigger and bigger. As with GrayingMorality, it's something of a cyclical process, often (but not always) coinciding with a new actor taking the role of Bond; every so often, the series 'reboots' to adopt a more gritty tone only to gradually escalate into larger-scale plots and action sequences, at which it goes gritty again.
