Ip Man actually targeted the inner elbow joint not the upper arm. He was likely trying to target the medial nerves which are in that location.

* ArtisticLicenseMartialArts: Targeting the opponent's upper arms, especially with a couple of inverted forearm strikes from the pocket as Ip does, should have very little lasting effect, if any - there is no real vital part there, only dense bone and flexible biceps and triceps, anchored to a shoulder joint which would allow the arms to be freely knocked aside and dissipate a lot of the force - not to mention that Twister, an absolute physical specimen, would certainly have well armored upper arms. It's even strange that the film mentions this plot point altogether, given that it also seems to have no decisive effect on Twister, who only takes a moment to shake his arms before start whaling on Ip again; it's rather after Ip goes for the eyes and ears that he really manages to turn the tide.
* ArtisticLicenseSports:
** There is absolutely no way that featherweight Ip would have been allowed to fight light heavyweight Twister, who's ''four'' weight classes above him. This is presumably allowed on the basis that it is technically not a proper boxing match, but rather a style vs. style mixed kind of fight, but this in turn argues against the promoters' decision to ban kicking, which becomes undefendable if it is not hosted under Marquess of Queensberry Rules.

Boxers started to transition to a more modern guard by the 1920s. By 1949, they still kept their hands a bit low but it was already pretty close to a modern conventional guard.

** Aside from the fact that a supposed boxing champion like Twister only seems to know two moves (left hook and right hook), he ironically keeps a high, gloves-to-the-face style of guard that would not be developed until decades after the era the film is set. Back then, boxers still used the classical arms down, horizontal forearms guard you can see in black and white photos.

* RealityIsUnrealistic: Many viewers complained about the supposedly "unskilled" Twister presenting such a formidable challenge to Ip when he handily defeated multiple karatekas and General Miura in the previous film. Whilst there is some grounds for this view, as boxing is a sport with rules and more limited techniques compared to other martial arts, it ''is'' a martial art, and Twister is clearly portrayed as being [[CharlesAtlasSuperpower physically built to withstand a lot of punishment]], which likely gives him a fair advantage. There is a very good reason that weight classes are so stringently enforced in modern fighting sports; 10 or 20 extra pounds of muscle is considered an enormous edge to the point that people from different weight classes are usually not allowed to fight each other, and Twister seems to have well over ''50'' pounds on Ip. [[spoiler:That being said, when Ip Man [[AttackItsWeakPoint figures out a strategy]] for fighting Twister in the very last bout, it turns the battle largely in Ip Man's favor.]]
