* ContrivedCoincidence: A lot of random variables all have to slot into place for Kevin to get left behind and spend the time believing his family has magically disappeared:
** Kevin instigates a fight in the kitchen after Buzz purposefully eats the last slice of cheese pizza, resulting in his plane ticket being thrown away while they clean up the mess.
** Kevin's reaction to being punished is to very willfully wish for his family to disappear.
** A wind storm that night knocks out the power, causing everyone to oversleep while not remembering to wake Kevin who was sent to sleep in the attic.
** When Heather is tasked with taking a headcount, a random neighbor kid around Kevin's build happens to be rifling through their luggage, and Heather is too annoyed from the rush and Buzz being a pain to turn him around and see his face.
** All throughout the rush to get on the plane, no one in the family notices that Kevin isn't among them.
** Having managed to sleep through the noise of a house full of people all rushing around, Kevin finally awakens, but he has no concept of what an airport shuttle is, so he immediately rules out the possibility of his family having gone to the airport upon seeing their cars still parked in the garage. As such, rather than spending most of his time alone trying to contact them, he instead believes that he magically made them vanish.
** Once the family finally realizes that Kevin was left behind, a massive blizzard cancels all outgoing flights at the French airport, and with the holiday season having booked practically every seat, there's a massive waitlist once the storm finally ends.
** With the phone lines having not yet been fixed on the [=McCallister=]'s street, Kate calls the Chicago police to get them to check up on him, but Kevin is too scared to answer the door after he notices Harry and Marv trying to break in, and the sent officer [[PoliceAreUseless as well as to an extent the entire department]] is too uninterested to stick around for more than a couple minutes.
** Kate is continually met with delay after delay on her journey back home, finally growing so desperate that she rides along with a polka band's tour bus because she refuses to wait for a later flight.

* BrokenAesop: Old Man Marley. It's supposed to be a "Don't believe everything you hear" aesop, but if an old guy with a notorious reputation just stared at you sinisterly without saying a word, you'd be creeped out, too. Let alone if you were an 8-year-old who was by himself.

* RuleOfSymbolism: The state of Old Man Marley's right hand throughout the film may well symbolise his relationship with his son, and by extension, the rest of his family. When he appears in the pharmacy, his hand is heavily wrapped in a bloody bandage, because at that moment, he hasn't spoken to his son in years and there is no sign of this changing. When Marley shakes hands with Kevin in the church, there is only a Band-Aid on his hand, because he is there to see his granddaughter sing in the choir, he has just told Kevin about the falling-out he had with his son years earlier, Kevin has just advised him to reconcile with his son, and Marley decides to give it a shot. [[spoiler:And in the final scene, Marley has indeed reconciled with his family and his hand is seen to have completely healed.]]

** Upon accepting that he's responsible for safeguarding his family home, Kevin decides to start sleeping in his parents' bedroom. While he has little in-story reason to do this (unless he just wanted to sleep in a bedroom with a television), it serves as an apt metaphor for him temporarily leaving behind his childhood and assuming the responsibilities of adulthood--and the image of an 8-year-old sleeping in an adult couple's bedroom serves as a fitting illustration of him feeling out-of-place in a big and scary world.

Adding details about Kate's flights

* AllForNothing: Kate wound up going on standby at an airport, manages to get on a flight after trading with a couple for cash, first class tickets, and a few other expensive items. She then flies to an unidentified US city but there are no flights to Chicago available. She rides in a Budget truck with a polka band to her home in Chicago in time to meet Kevin for Christmas. Her husband and Kevin's siblings arrive a few minutes later, having taken the Friday morning flight Kate didn't want to wait for.

* AmusingInjuries: The Wet Bandits suffer these in abundance thanks to Kevin's HomeAloneAntics.

** Kevin also does this when lip-syncing "Keep the change, ya filthy animal!" after scaring off Marv with firecrackers. This movie REALLY loves this trope, huh?

* CoversAlwaysLie: Kevin on the poster is depicted in a red sweater, performing his TheScreamParody which would go on to be a staple gag for the franchise, presumably in reaction to the burglars peeking through the window. Both times that Kevin actually performs the Scream, he is shirtless, having just stepped out of the shower. The reason he screams is because he tries to use some of his dad's aftershave.

* UnbuiltTrope: This was the movie that kickstarted the "kid empowerment" genre of the 1990s, but at the same time, it felt like a deconstruction. Instead of having wild and improbable fantasies like most other kid-empowered films, Kevin does mostly rather mundane things around the house, such as... jumping on the bed, sledding down the stairs, or eating tubs of ice cream while watching (somewhat) violent films. Also, because he was, well, home alone, he needed to find food and steal Buzz's money to survive. And unlike in other films, while Kevin does spend some of his money on junk food and toys, he also buys things he realistically needs such as washing machine liquid and microwave food, with him also being shown to do chores around the house. Furthermore, AdultsAreUseless not because of plot stupidity but because Kevin refused to trust them: he hated his extended family (especially Uncle Frank); he was scared that the police -- who were trying to help -- would arrest him after he (accidentally) stole a toothbrush; the Wet Bandits were constantly stalking him; and he was downright terrified of Old Man Marley. And despite all the traps and hilarious injuries Kevin inflicted on Harry and Marv, he actually ''failed'' to stop them in the end, and would have been killed [[spoiler: if it weren't for Old Man Marley coming in to rescue him]].

** The ending shows Kevin happy to be with his family and forgiving his mom for what she had done. This [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yh7-wAy_8ss video]] shows an adult Kevin (played by Macauley Culkin) is actually traumatized from being left by himself for a week at age 8 and having to defend himself against psychopathic home invaders. He also ignores his mom's calls due to a grudge against her for supposedly not caring about him and having become a groupie with a traveling polka band rather than try and save him (he apparently never heard the whole story mind you). He also seems to have pretty much become a sociopath as a result.
