This movie is probably best known for being featured on a particularly memorable episode of ''Series/MysteryScienceTheater3000''. Rick Sloane, the movie's director, actually ''requested'' that the film be featured on the show. Despite this, Sloane and his film suffered some of the harshest riffing that the show ever dished out. Series writer Paul Chaplin commented that the film "[shot] right to the top of the list of the worst movies [they had] ever done". Nonetheless, the choice of this film lead to the creation of an episode that many fans of the show consider to be one of the best.

''{{Hobgoblins}}'' is a movie that has to be seen to be believed. The haircuts, fashions and generic music showcase most of what was wrong with [[TheEighties the '80s]]. The plot is completely uninspired, the monsters are [[FollowTheLeader blatantly ripped off]] from ''Film/{{Gremlins}}'', the [[SpecialEffectsFailure "special effects"]] are completely atrocious and the soundtrack contains one of the most incomprehensible songs ever "sung" (which, despite this, the movie actually ''grinds to a hard stop'' to show the band performing said song in its entirety).

''{{Hobgoblins}}'' is a movie that has to be seen to be believed. While it is probably not the worst movie to ever be screened on ''Series/MysteryScienceTheater3000'', it is one of them, and it is certainly the sleaziest. The haircuts, fashions and generic music showcase most of what was wrong with [[TheEighties the '80s]]. This movie is most well known by being [[Recap/MysteryScienceTheater3000S09E07Hobgoblins one of the most popular episodes]] of ''Series/MysteryScienceTheater3000''. Despite Rick Sloane, the movie's director, having actually ''requested'' that the film be featured on the show, it suffered some of the harshest riffing ever seen thus far: The Mads removed the film case from the [[IndianaJones Ark of the Covenant]]. The bots tried to flee the theater during ''the opening credits''. Crow set up a hotline for people traumatized by the movie. Mike and the 'bots tried to escape ''again'' by replacing themselves with cardboard cutouts in the theater and the bridge (it nearly worked, too). Crow impersonated Sloane during the end credits claiming he was "high on crack" and had "[his] brain replaced with rat droppings". Servo tried, and failed, to go back in time to prevent the movie from being made. ''[=MST3K=]'' writer Paul Chaplin commented that the film "[shot] right to the top of the list of the worst movies [they had] ever done". However, it's near universally recognized as having created one of the best episodes of ''Series/MysteryScienceTheater3000'' ever.

* CardboardPal: Mike and the 'bots try to trick the Mads by placing cardboard cut outs of themselves in the theater, along with a tape recorder playing some poorly acted generic riffs ("That's stupid") and escaping. In the host segment, we see they did the same on the bridge. Only Observer wasn't fooled.
** During the movie's closing credits, they used another cutout for their faux interview with Rick Sloane.
** Notably, the cardboard cut-outs are based on the silhouettes of Mike and the bots that appeared on the back of Rhino VHS releases of MST3K at the time (the "Pointing Mike" cut-out being the most obvious).
* CheeseEatingSurrenderMonkeys: When Nick runs away from the hobgoblins, Crow riffs "Oh, Nick's in the ''French'' army, I see."
* DisproportionateRetribution / CoolAndUnusualPunishment: Pearl uses this movie to punish Mike and the 'bots for jumping on her rent-to-own furniture.

** A John Agar film festival? [[BigNo NooooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooOOOOOooooo!]]
* CreatorBacklash: In a surprising twist, Sloane actually brought his own work to the Brains' attention. He thought they did a good job with it, though he did take offense to their personal insults of him mentioned above.

* StableTimeLoop[=/=]YouCantFightFate: Servo's attempt to erase the existence of ''Hobgoblins'' by going back in time and kicking Rick Sloane in the shins ends up being the latter's inspiration for the movie.
** Tom explains this while dressed in a leather jacket and sunglasses while holding a machinegun; Mike explains that he thought that Tom was going to "[[TheTerminator terminate]]" Sloane.
** "That bastard! I'm gonna go back and kill him."
** Appropriately enough, Rick Sloane's admiration for the ''Series/MysteryScienceTheater3000'' presentation of ''Hobgoblins'' inspired him to create the sequel.
*** According to an [[http://www.badmovies.org/interviews/ricksloane/ interview with Rick Sloane]], he enjoyed the riffing until he got to the part with the faux-interview attacking him personally at the end.

Slightly dorky [[TheEveryman Everyman]] Kevin gets a job as a security guard at an abandoned film studio mostly to impress his cold and domineering girlfriend Amy. One night, he chases a burglar into an old film vault which his boss, [=McCreedy=], warned him not to enter. By doing so he releases the titular hobgoblins, little furry aliens who have the power to [[LotusEaterMachine make any person's deepest fantasies come true]] and then use those fantasies to kill said person. Kevin, along with the help of WellExcuseMePrincess Amy, the slutty Daphne, Daphne's obnoxious Army boyfriend Nick and phone sex obsessed dork Kyle, sets out to capture the hobgoblins before it is too late.

The plot is completely uninspired, the monsters are [[FollowTheLeader blatantly ripped off]] from ''{{Gremlins}}'', the [[SpecialEffectsFailure "special effects"]] are completely atrocious and the soundtrack contains one of the most incomprehensible songs ever "sung" (which, despite this, the movie actually ''grinds to a hard stop'' to show the band performing said song in its entirety).

This movie is most well known by being one of the most popular episodes of ''Series/MysteryScienceTheater3000''.

And twenty years later, Rick Sloane ''made a sequel''. [[http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0962728/ Yes, really.]]

!!''{{Hobgoblins}}'' contains examples of:
* AffectionateParody: ''{{Hobgoblins}}'' was clearly meant to parody ''{{Gremlins}}'', ''{{Goolies}}'' and other 80s little monsters movies. However, it is so unfunny that the result is that it is utterly terrible.
* AllWomenArePrudes: Amy in the first half of the film.
* ArtisticLicenseMilitary: Nick salutes his sergeant.
* AscendedMeme: The trailer for ''Hobgoblins 2'' contains a cover of the "Hobgoblins" song Mike & The Bots sing.
* AutoErotica: with a side order of {{Squick}}.
* BadGuyBar: Club Scum, though once we see the interior we learn it's an InformedAttribute.
--> '''Servo''': "Club Scum", eh? So why are there lunch ladies back there serving tater tots?
* BeAWhoreToGetYourMan: Double subversion -- Kevin tries to stop Amy from doing anything she'd regret, but he ''is'' pleased with the new direction their relationship takes by the film's end.
--> '''Crow''': "Yes girls, this is the only way to make your boyfriends like you."
* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor[=/=]LotusEaterMachine: The hobgoblins purposefully corrupt their victim's fantasies to kill them.
* BigDamnHeroes: [=McCreedy=] rescuing Kevin at the end.
* CovertPervert: Amy
* DeathByFallingOver: Dennis
* DevelopingDoomedCharacters: It sure does take a while for the title creatures to show up on-screen.
-->'''Mike:''' Ah, Hobgoblins four hours in.
* DrillSergeantNasty: Appears as part of the army boyfriend's "fantasy." He starts randomly chucking grenades around and viciously pointing a submachine gun at his surroundings (though never actually firing it-- perhaps fake explosions were cheaper than a prop gun that could fire blanks?)
* DullSurprise
* TheEighties
** EightiesHair: ''Dear God.''
* FailOSuckyname:
--> '''Crow''': "{{Serpico}}. DirtyHarry. [[{{Chinatown}} Jake Giddes]]. ...Kevin."
** Road Rash. ''Road Rash''.
* FollowTheLeader: This movie really hopes that you didn't see ''{{Gremlins}}''.
** Rick Sloane has said that he started writing the film before ''Gremlins'' came out, but couldn't find backers. In the initial drafts, the hobgoblins were [[TheGhost never seen]].
* FridgeLogic: Why didn't they just blow up the hobgoblins in the first place, rather than keep them locked up for decades?
** [=McCreedy=] likely couldn't have gotten another job due to people blaming him for being crazy for telling the story of the hobgoblins. He waited until he was fired, void of any responsibility, and in a position where he could get back at the studio's owner for firing him (after all, the insurance company won't be happy to learn no one was on duty).
** Or as {{Phelous}} points out, [=McCreedy=] could just lock the vault to begin with.
* FunnyBackgroundEvent: The extra in the Club Scum fight scene who overturns his own table no less than three times.
** Outside of Club Scum, each of them passes their wallets on to the next one in the group for safekeeping. The last guy in line calmly pulls a switchblade and mugs everyone.
* GettingCrapPastTheRadar:
--> '''Slightly Effeminate Man:''' I'm sorry. The Donkey Mud Wrestlers are supposed to use the ''rear'' entrance.
--> '''Crow:''' You're the expert on that.
* HeyItsThatGuy: You may recognize bouncer Road Rash from the business end of [[PulpFiction Butch Coolidge]]'s katana.
** Especially considering that while this movie came out quite a while before ''PulpFiction'', the MST3K episode that made it well known came out a few years afterwards.
* [=~Hey, It's That Voice!~=]: The manager at Club Scum, played by DaranNorris, will sound familiar to anyone who has seen ''FairlyOddparents''. He is also [[TalesOfSymphonia Rodyle]], [[DigimonFrontier Mercurymon]], [[TeamAmerica Spotswoode]], [[FushigiYuugi Tatsuki]], and [[TransformersPrime Knock Out.]]
* InsecuritySystem:
--> '''Mike:''' "Tell me again why they have an elaborate security system ''but they don't lock anything?!''"
* IndecipherableLyrics: [[strike:Iced Chicken]] [[strike: Pig Sticker]] [[strike: Pig Liquor]] [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hla1_iYAztU Kiss Kicker '99]]
** The mysterious lyrics are finally revealed [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kspr_19zgl4 here]] (see video description)
* JumpingOnAGrenade: Nick does this during his "fantasy".
** ManOnFire: The result.
*** MadeOfIron:
-->'''Crow:''' So the only side effect of his [[KillItWithFire complete immolation]] is... ''mild redness and irritation?''
* MadeOfPlasticine: Apparently Dennis was killed by attempting to crowdsurf when nobody was actually there to hold him up. Even though he was like two feet off the ground, tops.
* MakeoutPoint: Called "Reputation Road". It's surprisingly elaborate, with signs to indicate where you should park based on what you plan to do. Mike thinks they must have public funding.
* MickeyMousing
-->'''Crow:''' Their garden tools make little Casio sounds.
* MildlyMilitary: While minor in the grand scheme of ''gaping'' plot holes this movie has, Nick has an incredible amount of hair for someone a) in the Army and b) just out of boot camp.
* MyGirlIsASlut.
-->'''Crow''': So, Mike, I learned from today's movie that Daphne was a slut, and Amy wasn't fun until she became a slut.
-->'''Mike Nelson''': Well, that's [[FamilyUnfriendlyAesop the fun message of today's movie]]!
* {{Narm}}: It's in abundance, but the moment that ''really'' stands out is the infamous rake fight
* OldShame: Surprisingly averted with DaranNorris, who despite going on to better things, looks back on his MC role with fondness and without regrets.
* [[OurGoblinsAreDifferent Our Hobgoblins Are Different]]: They're plush-sized furry space creatures that can make your deepest fantasies manifest.
** They're also incredibly incompetent for monsters. They only manage to kill one guy in the entire film.
* PlotHole: Why is it the Hobgoblins didn't escape from the vault when it was open for several minutes but the second time it was opened they run out in a second?
** Here's another: Why didn't the old man just blow them up immediately after it was clear they were dangerous? Sure, he would've lost his job but he wasn't too old at the time and would easily have gotten another as long as he could cover up the whole "blew up my last job" thing.
** He could at least have ''locked'' the vault. I mean, that's the sole reason for using a vault, isn't it?
** What happened to Dennis's body? Did [=McCreedy=] just leave it to rot in the vault?
* ReallyGetsAround: Daphne.
* SelfParody: The sequel, at least [[TrailersAlwaysLie so it would seem]] from [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HI8omyZbfeEthe trailer]].
* SpeedSex: After the rake fight, Daphne and Nick immediately make for the van for some celebratory sex, and it's seen [[DontComeAKnockin rocking vigorously]] [[FunnyBackgroundEvent while Kevin and Amy argue in the foreground]]. They reemerge after exactly thirty seconds, none the worse for wear.
* ThanksForTheMammary: Kyle [[{{Squick}} sure looks excited]] as he pins the corsage on Daphne's chest.
* ThreeChordsAndTheTruth: Club Scum, mocked by Crow.
-->'''Crow''': "Chord, chord, chord, chord, chord, other chord."
* TooDumbToLive: Most of the characters.
* WellExcuseMePrincess: Amy. Just watch the "rake fight" sequence.
* [[WhatDoYouMeanItsNotAwesome What Do You Mean, It's Not Awesome?]]: Epic rake-dueling!
* WithFriendsLikeThese: It is sort of baffling to wonder how this group of kids came to be friends.
* WhyDontYaJustShootHim: [[spoiler:Why didn't [=McCreedy=] blow up the hobgoblins' vault in the ''first place''?]] It makes a "bit" more sense in the uncut as [=McCreedy=] uses the opportunity to screw his boss over on not being able to file an insurance claim because said boss never believed [=McCreedy=] about the Hobgoblins. Of course, Kevin is almost certainly going to be fired too, but the movie never really addresses that.
* YouCanLeaveYourHatOn: [[FanDisservice And the rest as well, please.]]
