* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: Hellboy finds out the hard way that being famous isn't all it's cracked up to be.

** The Golden Army is this, too. Given that the soldiers can rebuild themselves, they have the capacity to destroy all of humanity. Even when they were locked away beneath the elven capitol of Bethmora, the army brought with it a curse that caused the elves to abandon the city.
* ClassicalElementsEnsemble: The main four characters trying to save the world have ElementalMotifs related to the classical elements: Abe Sapien (an aquatic FishMan), Liz (a woman with pyrokinetic powers), Dr. Krauss (a ghost made of smoke-like ectoplasm) and Hellboy himself who has a hand made of stone. Therefore we have water, fire, air, and earth.

* FantasticFragility: Destroy or disassemble the Golden Crown, and the Golden Army [[KeystoneArmy becomes inert]].

* FunnyForeigner: Johann Krauss, who is a comic relief of sorts, is from Germany.

* HealingFactor: The Golden Army's soldiers are virtually indestructible due to their ability to reassemble themselves completely despite being broken up into a thousand pieces.

* PsychicPowers: Abe is telepathic and able to read the past of objects and places, probably to allow them to do an InfoDump for the audience without it seeming too awkward.

* TouchTelepathy: Abe Sapien can learn about objects or people by touching them. For example, he can touch a weapon left behind at a crime scene and see exactly how the crime happened—or he can touch a superior's hand and realize the man is dying of cancer. On a more positive note, when he touched Liz[[spoiler:'s belly]], he detected, that she [[spoiler:is pregnant with twins]].

* TwinTelepathy: Prince Nuada and Princess Nuala. Exaggerated, since this is constantly active, leading Nuada right to Nuala.

Meanwhile, Abe meets a nice elf girl, Princess Nuala of Bethmoora, and they hit off quite well. Unfortunately, her twin brother Prince Nuada has declared [[KillAllHumans war on humanity]]. He plans to reawaken the [[KeystoneArmy Golden Army]]--invincible automatons that nearly drove humanity to extinction the first time they were used--and he kills just about everyone who stands between him and the crown that would allow him to control the Army.

It looks like a rotary grenade launcher fused with a lever action shotgun, and takes six slugs the size of artillery rounds, each engraved with a baby bottle and the message "SUCK ON THIS." When used against a monster Nuala summons, the Big Baby fires two barrels at once and can liquify the creature's head.

A third film was reportedly in conceptual stage, but after a long period of DevelopmentHell, the project turned into a full-on ContinuityReboot, simply titled ''Film/{{Hellboy|2019}}''.

* ActionFilmQuietDramaScene: Hellboy and Abe sharing drinks and singing along to [[Music/BarryManilow Can't Smile Without You]]. While the scene itself is played for laughs, it nevertheless is a very effective way to flesh out their friendship and humanize them both.

* FragileSpeedster: Prince Nuada is extremely fast and agile, however, he is not invincible and relies on his {{synchronization}} with Nuala to protect him, since Abe and the others don't want to hurt Nuala. [[spoiler:This ends up [[DeathByIrony being his undoing]] ]].
