"Comprised of" is grammatically incorrect. Also fleshing out ZCE.

However, the film does also take great influence from the minimalist realism of Clarke's short; it was noted for its use of long tracking shots, extended sequences with little or no dialogue and a cast comprised mostly of non-actors, giving it a disconnected and ethereal quality.

%%* * AlcoholicParent: John's father.father is already drunk by the time he tries to drive John to school in the morning; he cannot drive the car in a straight line and keeps hitting parked cars by the roadside. John orders him into the passenger seat, takes over driving for the rest of the journey, and confiscates the keys when they arrive so that his older brother Paul can drive both their father and the car home. His phone conversation with Paul implies this is a regular occurrence.

Van Sant based his film on a 1989 BBC short film of the same name made by Alan Clarke. Clarke's film was a reflection on UsefulNotes/TheTroubles in Northern Ireland and was largely composed of cold, observational tracking shots following gunmen as they assassinate targets.

The structure of the film more closely resembles Van Sant's vision, as the story of a single day is shown from the viewpoint of different high school students, including the shooters themselves. While many possible explanations are offered for the shooters' actions (violent video games, neo-Nazism, bullying, etc), the film deliberately does not make their motives clear.

* UltraSuperDeathGoreFestChainsawer3000: Darkly satirized with the FirstPersonShooter we see Eric play at one point. Named ''Gerrycount'' as an homage to the director's previous film ''Film/{{Gerry}}'', it revolves entirely around wandering across an empty void shooting avatars of Creator/MattDamon and Creator/CaseyAffleck who keel over in a horribly canned animation, about as stripped-down as an FPS can possibly be. It feels like a parody of the idea that [[MurderSimulators violent video games make people violent]], as the game in question is so dull and plain that one can't possibly imagine anyone getting any excitement or aggressive urges out of it.

* RiddleForTheAges: Invoked by the director through having the school shooters have a dozen implied reasons to go on a rampage, but they never provide any kind of MotiveRant.
