* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: In trying to get the Runts to leave him alone while trying to get with Angelica, Buscapé gives them his joint. This is turn leads the Runts to consider Buscapé a "cool guy" for being nice to them for once (especially given [[WouldHurtAChild how Zé deals with them]]) and they personally leave Buscapé alone afterwards...though they are still more than willing to shoplift from the grocery store where Buscapé works, inadvertently getting him fired.

* AmbitionIsEvil: Applies to a number of characters but Dadinho/Lil Zé most of all: his StartOfDarkness is directly linked to his growing ambition to move up in the criminal world, and his goal through all of his [[spoiler:short]] life is to take control of the City's drug trade by any means necessary (usually violence).
-->'''Buscapé:''' To be a real hood, you need more than just a gun: you need ideas...and Dadinho had them.

* NoTellMotel: The scene of the Tender Trio's greatest heist, though planned by Dadinho: the Trio quickly mob the front desk and incapacitate the staff, then move through the hotel robbing the various customers and their "dates." The Trio figures that, as most customers are busy seeing prostitutes, they wouldn't dare call the cops either during or after the raid. They're right...[[OutsideContextProblem but then Dadinho decides that the Trio are having all the fun without him]], [[AxCrazy and he's now got a gun...]]

* NeighbourhoodFriendlyGangsters: The Tender Trio and Bene both try to exemplify this trope. The Trio ultimately fail at this as they take the blame for Dadinho's massacre at the hotel, though all three strongly deny killing innocents and Clipper ultimately finds religion from the situation. Bene never flags in his reputation as this, remaining beloved by civilians and hoods alike [[spoiler:until Blacky accidentally kills him]].
**PlayedWith for Carrot: he's nowhere as harsh or violent of a criminal as Ze, preferring to keep the peace if he can, is legitimately friendly with Bene and Mane, and he does appear to feel a genuine sympathy for Mane's situation. However, Carrot is certainly also an unrepentant hoodlum who has no qualms with killing if he has to (including civilians), sells drugs and guns to kids, and ultimately is able to steer Mane into a life of crime that destroys Mane's morals.

** Bene takes longer to become established, mostly being seen early on tagging along with Ze on the latter's various crimes. Bene's moment comes when, after he accepts Thiago's dad's watch as collateral for a coke trade, he feels a strong feeling of remorse. Grabbing a bike, Bene catches up to Thiago and gives him some money to buy Bene the nice clothes he wants. This starts a friendship between the two that leads to Thiago introducing Bene to Rocket and his friends, firmly establishing Bene as the [FriendlyNeighborhoodGangsters Friendly Neighborhood Gangster]] to Ze's [[BadBoss]].

** Rocket also takes a while for his moment to come, with his early life mostly being him getting in trouble by proxy for Goose's various misdeeds. His moment ultimately arrives when Shaggy is killed by cops in the street: a local journalist comes to snap some photos for a tabloid, and Rocket is instantly fascinated by his camera and vows to explore photography.

There are also scenes in the beginning where the police kill innocent bystanders by accident, then simply shrug and plant false evidence on them. They also deal contraband weapons to the various gangsters in the City, and when pursuing Clipper and Goose two of them makes plans to just kill the thieves and take the money if they catch them. [[spoiler:At the end of the film, Rocket takes a series of pictures showing Lil Zé paying off the cops and then being murdered by the Runts. Rocket decides to submit only the picture of Zé's bullet-ridden corpse to the newspaper as he fears submitting the picture of Zé and the cops will spur retribution from the latter, and they've certainly shown themselves to be willing to kill to tie up loose ends (as the arms dealer who Zé shorted found out the hard way)]].

** Carrot does this to Blacky as well, after the latter has admitted to shooting Bené. Carrot has two reasons for this: 1. he himself was good friends with Bené, and 2. he realizes that without Bené, Zé is going to come after him immediately, and thus Blacky has endangered not just his own life but that of Carrot and his whole crew as well.

* PetTheDog: The only good thing about Li'l Zé is that he actually gives a rat's ass about his friend Bené. He gives Buscapé the camera because Bené would have wanted it. And he leaves Carrot alone because he's friends with Bené. Doesn't make him any less of a monster.

** Clipper also gets one: after his HeelFaithTurn, he slowly walks through the favela to the nearest church: he passes by a group of cops, but they think that the innocent man walking behind him is actually one of the thieves and so pursue him instead of Clipper. Later, after killing the innocent man and realizing their mistake, the cops frame his death to make it look like the man was a criminal: they fire a bullet from "his" gun, which ricochets off of numerous surfaces before narrowly missing Clipper, hitting a rearview mirror right next to him. Clipper makes it to the church and from that point on devotes himself to a pious life. Was Clipper's great string of luck that day just that, or was there some divine intervention at work?
