After a bank robber escapes from prison, his ex-girlfriend Sherry Pierce (Nia Long) flees with her young son Trent to the home of her mother, Hattie Mae Pierce aka Big Momma. Unbeknownst to Sherry, the real Big Momma is out of town and undercover FBI agent Malcolm Turner has stepped into a FatSuit to impersonate her. Malcolm and his partner suspect Sherry has the money from the original robbery, but Malcolm starts to doubt her guilt. Later, Sherry "meets" Malcolm out of the FatSuit, where he introduces himself as a local electrician, giving him a chance to bond with Sherry and her son as a possible romantic partner / father figure. Malcolm is torn between his duty as an agent and his growing feelings for Sherry.

* {{Easily Forgiven}}: Malcolm, who completely gets off scot free for impersonating Sherry's mother. He gets the girl. He even gets her mom's blessing!

* TooDumbToLive: Sherry, who despite saying on a few occasions that her mom looks different and also saying Malcolm's eyes look "familiar," doesn't realize that her mom is not only not her mom but the man she's dating. Also, everyone else who notices that she looks different but thinks nothing of it.

* {{Hilarious in Hindsight}}: Ritha, played by Tichina Arnold is giving birth and Big Momma has to deliver the baby. When she Big Momma tells her to close her legs, she snaps, "THEY DON'T CLOSE." To which Big Momma responds, "That might be how you got this way in the first place." Martin and Tichina's character Pam traded barbs constantly on Martin, so seeing them do the same in a movie, a few years after the show ended is pretty funny.

* {{Oh Crap}}: When Sherry catches [[spoiler: Lester in Trent's room, reading him ghost stories]].

* {{The Reveal}}: Done in every movie after Malcom beats the villain.

* WhyWouldAnyoneTakeHimBack: Seriously, Malcolm pretended to be his love interest's mother just to get close to her. He even shared a borderline incestual kiss with her when he realized Sherry had no part in her ex-boyfriend's crimes. He got an erection while in bed with her, continuously catcalled her on the sly upon seeing her body and attempted to befriend her son, all in an effort to get close to her and solve the case. Yet at the end of the movie, Sherry forgives him and as the rest of the movies indicate, they even [[spoiler: had kids]]!
