* %%* AllLovingHero: Babe to a subtle degree.
* AngryGuardDog: Rex.Rex does not like Babe, though he eventually comes to respect and help him out. And the dogs that attack Maa are portrayed as such. But it's subverted with Fly, who [[ParentalSubstitute adopts]] Babe.

* AnimalsFearNeutering: Rex is acting wild for [[GreenEyedMonster perfectly understandable reasons]], but a vet, who doesn't speak dog, doesn't understand why except that a "snip-snip" will solve the problem. Because he's a stud, the Hoggets have him given an injection, instead of getting him neutered.
* AnimalsLackAttributes: Babe is always played by a female since they have less genitalia and to avoid showing a male's testicles.

to:

* CarnivoreConfusion: Acknowledged. When was Acknowledged when Farmer Hogget somehow assumes Babe killed the last time you cringed at sheep. Pigs are omnivorous and have been used to 'hide' bodies in the past by [[FedToPigs feeding them chopped-up corpses]]... but Babe is still a duck dinner?''piglet'', so it's unlikely he ''could'' kill a grown sheep.
* CatchYourDeathOfCold: Babe catches a cold after running away from home on a rainy night. Though the cold itself concerns the vet less than the little pig's refusal to eat, which unbeknownst to the humans, is because of the reason why he ran away: he just learned that humans eat pigs. But after Farmer Hoggett comforts him with a song and dance, assuring him of his love, he eats again and quickly recovers.

* CockADoodleDawn: Parodied when a duck crows to avoid being eaten. This really annoys not only the actual rooster, who sees it as ''his'' job but can never wake up early enough to beat the duck, but also the farmers, who opt to buy an alarm clock.
-->'''Esme Hoggett:''' We've got to do something about that duck.

* CrappyHomemadeGift: Subverted, as the gift (a huge dollhouse) farmer Hogget made is absolutely stunning, but [[SpoiledBrat his granddaughter]] throws a screeching tantrum because "it's not the one I saw on television", while her beaming parents look on.

* DomesticAbuse: A brief moment shows Rex [[spoiler: attacking his mate Fly]].
* DownOnTheFarm: The Hoggetts' farm is the main setting of this film.

* DomesticAbuse: A brief moment shows Rex [[spoiler:attacking his mate Fly]].
* DontWakeTheSleeper: Ferdinand enlists Babe's help with going into Farmer Hogget's house to steal an alarm clock so he can go back to crowing and not get eaten. Inside the house, Duchess the Cat is sleeping and it is revealed that Ferdinand needs Babe's help because [[PlotAllergy he is allergic to cats]]. Babe promises not to wake up Duchess, but after he gets his foot caught in a ball of yarn, Ferdinand decides to help after all. However, on their way out, Ferdinand is about to let out an IllTimedSneeze. [[SubvertedTrope It isn't that that wakes up Duchess, though]]. It's Babe dropping the alarm clock telling him to hold it in and setting it off that does.
* DownOnTheFarm: The Hoggetts' farm is the main setting of the film. It consists of a field of sheep and a barn with a variety of animals.

* FriendToAllLivingThings: Babe.

to:

* FriendlyTickleTorture: When the rest of the Hoggett Family comes to visit for a Christmas get-together, Esme (Farmer Hoggett's wife) uses measuring tape to see how big Babe has gotten (to see if he's worth being eaten for dinner). Upon realizing that Babe's too small to eat, she passes off her actions by playfully tickling Babe's stomach.

FriendToAllLivingThings: Babe.

* IMissMom: After Babe has seen his mother hauled off.
--> '''Babe:''' "I want my mom."
* InevitabilityClarification: Arthur Hoggett decides to enter a county fair contest to guess the titular pig's weight. As he leaves, one of the two contest organizers at the stand tells him they'll call him if he wins, only for the other to insist, "When you win, Arthur! When you win!" since Hoggett was the only person who was able to pick up Babe without the pig squealing. Sure enough, Arthur gets a phone call the next day telling him he won the pig.

* InterspeciesAdoption: Babe the pig is adopted by Fly who is a dog.

* MotorMouth: Mrs. Hoggett.

to:

* MenLikeDogsWomenLikeCats: Farmer Arthur Hoggett owns a pair of sheepdogs named Rex and Fly, whom he keeps for breeding purposes, and like most of the animals on Hoggett Farm, they refer to him as the Boss. Farmer Hoggett's wife, Esme, owns a cat named Duchess, who refers to her as the Boss and Farmer Hoggett as the Boss' Husband.
* MindlessSheep: Zig-zagged. The dogs wholeheartedly believe in this trope and that aggressively berating and wrangling the sheep is the only way to get them to do anything, but Babe discovers that the sheep are merely {{Kindhearted Simpleton}}s who are bad at listening unless spooked, and that Babe actually ''can'' get them to listen to his polite requests by using their secret TrustPassword.
* AMischiefOfMice: Downplayed with the three singing mice who serve as a GreekChorus to the movie. They don't affect the plot but tend to giggle mischievously when Babe is about to get in trouble (although they are sad and respectful when introducing the chapter when Ma dies).
%%*
MotorMouth: Mrs. Hoggett.

* NewParentNomenclatureProblem: Babe initially calls his border collie ParentalSubstitute Fly by her name, but after her puppies are sold, he asks if he can call her "Mom," and that's what he calls her throughout the rest of the film.

* OffendedByAnInferiorsSuccess: Retired sheepdog Rex is disdainful at this piglet who's been herding sheep with ease, in part thanks to encouragement from his mate Fly, culminating in him attacking her and biting his master, which leads to him getting deemed dangerous and chained up. Afterward, Fly explains to Babe that Rex doesn't like him because he's already done more than he ever did, telling him of when Rex tried and failed to save some sheep during a wild storm, [[ICouldaBeenAContender which left him nearly deaf and cutting his career short]].

* PlotAllergy: Ferdinand the duck wants to steal the Hoggetts' alarm clock (ItMakesSenseInContext), but he's allergic to cats, so to avoid waking the Hoggetts' [[CatsAreMean mean cat Duchess]] with an IllTimedSneeze, he recruits Babe to sneak into the house and steal the alarm clock for him.

* QuackingUp: A RunningGag in the movie is Ferdinand the duck [[CockADoodleDawn crowing like a rooster in the morning]] in an attempt to make himself indispensable so [[BlackComedy the humans won't eat him]].

* ReleasedToElsewhere: The movie features a variation on this in the opening, where the pigs in the industrial pen tell themselves that all the pigs that are taken away are sent to Pig Paradise, "a place so wonderful that no pig had ever thought to come back." Babe never learns their real fate, though he's the only one out of the whole group who's sad about his mom leaving like this. However, when the cat tells him that pigs are put on this planet to only be eaten by humans, he gets the idea that, yes, his mother and siblings might possibly be served with eggs at this point.

* {{Tagline}}: "A little pig goes a long way."
* TearfulSmile: Mrs. Hoggett hasn't finished crying with horror and embarrassment because she thinks her husband has gone crazy for entering a pig in a herding contest, before she begins laughing because [[spoiler:he won]].

* TwistedChristmas: Despite being a family film, it doesn't show Christmas in a positive light. We see Farmer Hoggett take Ferdinand's girlfriend Rosanna to the chopping block to be their meal, half of the sheep be stolen by rustlers, and the bratty granddaughter reject a homemade dollhouse.
* UncommonTime: Composer Nigel Westlake adapted the fourth movement of the Camille Saint-Säens' third symphony as the main theme, which often switches between 4/4 and 7/4, as opposed to the original 9/4 and 6/4.

* WhereTheHellIsSpringfield: It's not very clear where the Hoggett Farm and the rural town close to it are supposed to be; most of the Australian actors are doing FakeAmerican accents while the American Creator/JamesCromwell affects a vaguely English one. Compare this with the book ''The Sheep-Pig'', which is explicitly set in the north of England. Maybe this was done so viewers could assume it could, indeed, be a rural region anywhere in the world.
* YouAreTooLate: Though Babe does prevent the wild dogs from dragging any of the sheep away, [[spoiler: he's unable to prevent Maa from having her throat ripped out, killing her.]]

Hoggett takes Babe to the barn and prepares his shotgun to terminate the killer pig. Fortunately, Hoggett's wife announces that local police are seeking armed sheep rustlers in the area. While theoretically a children's movie, its offbeat charm and heartwarming (and remarkably {{Glurge}}-free) story made it a favorite amongst all ages. It even received seven UsefulNotes/AcademyAward nominations including Best Picture, to the surprise of many... and the chagrin of the Academy, which made efforts to keep further "children's movies" from qualifying in the future. (Hello, [[AnimationAgeGhetto Best Animated Picture]] category! Best Animated Picture says, "hi.")
