* 0% approval rating-Savage is an incredibly unpopular figure especially in the book. His authority is ignored, someone keyed his car, he didn’t get invited to the faculty Christmas part even though Tony the janitor did, and it’s implied that in over twenty years of teaching he’s only gotten a single thank you card from a student at the end of the year.

* And I must scream: spoilers: Chris and Lisa trying to hold hands but moving past each other after zombification screams this, although it also has an optimistic interpretation-see HopeSpot.

* Asian airhead: zigzagged. Lisa is a Eurasian example. Early on she does make a few ditzy remarks (the DigginYourselfInDeeper moment, and nt knowing that a prosthetic leg and a fake leg are the same thing). This part of her character disappears after the first half hour though, once the zombies are making themselves known, at which point she comes across as more level-headed.

* BloodKnight: Nick and his friends, although there's a little more to Nick's character.

* break the cutie; averted with both Lisa and male cutie John, who are understandably shaken up by what they go through but are never quite broken.

*Digging yourself in deeper: played for laughs when Lisa briefly forget Nick and Anna used to date while insulting him.
Lisa-->I mean, yeah,he's got a body you could lick chocolate off but you'd have to have like, no self-respect
to even think...
[Lisa pauses and looks at Anna, then tries to backtrack]
I mean, um...Not you, obviously! The others! Not that there's been loads, you know, it's probably all just rumors anyway.

* : quite a few backgroundcharatcers during "Turning My Life Around" are last seen running like hell with zombies ambling after them.

* Foreshadowing:

to:

* FinalGirl: Anna and Steph both subvert a lot of cliches usually found with this trope (part of what makes the movie so refreshing) by being apparently sexually active, more assertive personalities and tough action girls. Lisa (committed relationship in a bit of a damsel role) and gender-flipped John (virginal, loyal follower, unrequited love, sensitive) evoke a lot more of this but spoilers: they both get bitten
.
* Foreshadowing:

Added DiffLines:

** Quite a few during "Turning My Life around"; first one of Ana's neighbors fights back with a hammer but this turns into a negated moment of awesome. Then we see a car managing to back out of a driveway, but the driver is apparently killed by a zombie based on how blood splatters across the windshield. Two of Anna's classmates try to wave her down and alert her to the zombies but she can't hear them over her headphones. On a lighter note, many of the background characters are still alive but running when they're last seen, which could imply that more of the townspeople survived than the rest of the film would imply.
** Finding Lisa and Tony alive when they reach the school.
**for a somewhat dark version, Anna does mention the hope of a cure and most characters are zombified, not dead. Also, the actions of a zombified spoilers Chris and Lisa may hint there can be lingering humanity in the zombies (although whether it’s enough to ever overcome their ravenous nature is vague).

Added DiffLines:

* InnocentlyInsensitive: in the novelization Chris mistakes the man whose running the soup kitchen for one of the homeless people, to his great embarrassment.
* Irony: a sad case Tony is the only person in the only person to show Mr. Savage any respect or kindness and yet he is the person Savage treats with the least respect and kindness.

Added DiffLines:

** Chris's mother also died when he was being born, according to the novel.

Added DiffLines:

* Negated moment off awesome: During "Turning My Life Around",
one of Anna's neighbors stands his ground and tries to de-brain a zombie with a hammer. Unfortunately, said zombie is wearing a hard hat, and the blows glance off.

Added DiffLines:

* RunningGag: Anna and John being unable to remember the names of Santa's reindeer.

Added DiffLines:

* ThoseTwoGuys: the penguin-costumed rappers, and Lisa's costume assistants, although all four are more minor characters than normal for this trope.

Added DiffLines:

* {{True companions}: Anna, John, Steph, Chris and (despite how she's spectated from the group for so long) Lisa, with Nick as kind of a sixth ranger.
