Jean Gilkyson (Creator/JenniferLopez) takes her daughter Griff and walks out on her abusive boyfriend (Creator/DamianLewis). They go to Wyoming to seek shelter from Jean's father-in-law Einar (Creator/RobertRedford), who receives them coldly due to blaming Jean for his son's death in a car accident. Einar is also acting as a caregiver for his ranch hand Mitch (Creator/MorganFreeman) after Mitch was badly injured by a bear. The bear is being kept in the town's makeshift zoo, while Einar watches it bitterly and Mitch feels sympathy for the animal.
