* InNameOnly: [[DownplayedTrope Sorta]]. While the movie keeps all the essentials like the protagonist, his parents, one of his [[BigBrotherBully big brother bullies]] and having the plot center around said protagonist having a bad day, because it's a two-hour long movie adapted from a short kids' book, the story (unsurprisingly) goes through a number of changes. In addition, the book focused on Alexander having a bad day while the movie focuses on him and his family having a bad day.

In addition, the book focused on Alexander having a bad day while the movie focuses on him and his family having a bad day. It also wasn't Alexander's birthday in the book, and the things he hated about the day were far less outrageous, instead largely being mundane annoying situations that could happen to any kid, like being ignored by other kids during recess, having a cavity found by the dentist, not enjoying the vegetables at dinner, and a nightlight burning out.

Alexander Cooper spends a day (revealed to be his ''birthday'' no less) miserable as the rest of the family are reveling too much in their success to notice his rotten day. After ending up making a birthday sundae for himself, he wishes his family could experience the same sort of disappointment he goes through. What happens the next day is just that...

* NiceMeanAndInBetween: The four Cooper siblings are divided into this. Emily is the kind and friendly nice, Anthony is the rude and immature BigBrotherBully mean and Alexander and Trevor are both the in-between as the former is a JerkWithAHeartOfGold and the latter can be an AnnoyingYoungerSibling at times but he's still harmless.
