** Stanley Lieber's old hero alias ([[LegacyCharacter now inherited by Hiro]]) "Excelsior" is Creator/StanLee's CatchPhrase. There's also the fact that "Stanley Lieber" is Stan Lee's real name, and his wife is later shown to be named Joan, which is the same as the real Stan Lee's own wife.

** During the attack on [=KreiTech=], Yama trolls Krei by claiming he and his men are after some [[Franchise/StarWars proton torpedoes]], some [[Franchise/StarTrek dilithium warp engines]], and a [[Film/BackToTheFuture flux capacitor]].

** Hiro and Fred's dad are concerned that the AVL might be aware of Big Hero 9's secret identities and are planing on tracking them down to arrest them for violating the Super Relocation Act. Except the ending of the last story reveals that the AVL is planning on ''recruiting'' them, and other heroes. Also, Fred's dad's line about the AVL having the most sophisticated equipment around is undercut by the next scene showing Agent Dicker struggling with an old out-dated computer.

** Gru held to the same standards when he was a villain as well, which is why he was one of the few villains willing to work with Megamind. Even after becoming a hero, Megamind still thinks highly of him.

* EveryoneHasStandards: While [=GoGo=] has no qualms in sneaking 18-year-old Violet into a nightclub for Girls' Night, she draws the line at bringing 12-year-old Riley and Tip there.

* MonsterRoommate: Oh has moved in with Fred (who claims that [[CloudCuckoolander he's wanted an alien roommate since he was a kid]]). Before that, Oh was this to Wasabi. Wasabi admits that he's much happier with Oh staying at Fred's.

* AfterActionPatchUp: After the Big Hero 9 is saved from the Syndicate by the Incredibles, Frozone, Megamind, and the Monsters, they are taken to the AVL Hero Base for medical treatment (and so they can fix Baymax).

** Dr. Cockroach was one to Robert Callaghan when he was still a student, and is incredibly disappointed in how he's become Yokai.

* ShapeshifterBaggage: Susan has the same mass when shrunken down, due to the way the SizeShifter device she uses works (contracting the empty space in her molecules).

* SuperStrength: Susan is as strong shrunken as she is big because of the SizeShifter device that she uses not changing her overall mass.
* ThatManIsDead: A minor example. Before he had the accident that turned him into a monster, Dr. Cockroach's real name was Vincent Delambre, a famed geneticist. He doesn't go by that name anymore, as the government faked his death after he was taken into their custody. Honey Lemon, a talented scientist herself, is starstruck when she learns that a man who's work she's studied for ''years'' is one of her newest teammates.

** The other members of the group ''aren't'' happy with Fred for letting their identities slip to Violet, even if she's a super herself. Fred manages to argue that his friends gave him no choice, as he was with Violet, in the lab, when they called him.

* GenkiGirl:
** Joy.
** Oh is a male version of this, as he's enthusiastic and doesn't always have an indoor voice.

* LetsYouAndHimFight: In chapter 14, the Incredibles and Frozone spar against Team Monster, Megamind, and Minion. Mr. Incredible is especially eager to fight Megamind, to the point that, in Chapter 15, the other teams have to stop him from continuing to beat up Megamind.

* LoveAtFirstSight: Fred develops a crush on Violet when he first meets her, to the point that [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness he can't speak]].

** After learning about Nefario's StartOfDarkness, Hiro sees similarities between the two of them, the main difference being that he had his friends their to act as as collective MoralityPet.

* EyeColorChange: When testing the emotion chip, Baymax's eyes change color to the associated color of the emotion he is experiencing, such as red for anger, green for disgusted, yellow for happy, and blue for sad.

* HeroesGoneFishing: In Chapters 11 and 12, [=GoGo=] takes Honey, Violet, and Susan to a club for a night out. Riley and Tip are mentioned having a sleepover (borrowing Baymax for some reason), while Hiro, Fred, Wasabi, and Oh have a video game night.

* JerkassRealization: When Bob points out Metro Man's decision to fake his death indirectly led to people dying, he appears to be shaken by it, perhaps realizing his mistake for the first time.

** During the nightclub fight, Susan is completely unharmed by anything her opponents throw at her, thanks to the nature of her SizeShifter powers making her virtually invulnerable at normal human size.

* OddFriendship: Plucky, energetic AVL operative Lucy Wilde and FemmeFatale former-supervillain accomplice Mirage. When Lucy feels that Mirage is being treated unfairly when she is sent to pick up the Monster team from Monger, even calling Mirage her best friend with Mirage doing nothing to deny this.

* BarBrawl: The girls night out turns into one of these when some drunk frat boys start harassing Susan and Honey, with them fighting back and [=GoGo=] and Violet coming to their defense.

* TimeSkip: For the Parr family, it's been four years since they fought Syndrome, so Jack Jack's a toddler, Dash's a teenager, and Violet's a college student.

The AVL team consists of a boy genius, a robotic nurse with karate skills, his girlfriend with empathic abilities, a germaphobic engineer/black belt in karate, a bubbly yet [[AdaptationalAngstUpgrade depressed]] chemist, a rough no-nonsense engineer and cyclist, the incredibly rich son of a super-hero, a normal girl who can drive a flying car, her alien copilot, a blue-skinned alien and former villain, his sidekick (a fish driving a robotic suit), a family of superheroes, their close friend with ice powers, a fifty-foot-tall woman, a butterfly kaiju, a sentient blob, a fish-ape, and a scientist who gave himself a cockroach head.

* InstantlyProvenWrong: PlayedForLaughs. When Megamind, Agent Wilde, Riley, and Tip go to see Gru, Megamind warns them that, while not a villain any more, Gru is still a highly dangerous man. Cue Gru opening the door while wearing a bright pink apron and asking them to make the conversation quick because he has cookies in the oven.

* SupermanStaysOutOfGotham: The reason why the AVL has been keeping itself out of Metro City is because Megamind was not considered a big enough threat to warrant their concern, his villain career consisting of robbery and property damage while not actually being a danger to the public (fully aware that Metro Man was alive and well).

* HeroesGoneFishing: In Chapters 11 and 12, GoGo takes Honey, Violet, and Susan to a club for a night out. Riley and Tip are mentioned having a sleepover (borrowing Baymax for some reason), while Hiro, Fred, Wasabi, and Oh have a video game night.

* IDontWantToRuinOurFriendship: Go Go says that this is why she spent so long putting off hooking up with Wasabi.

* ParentalFear:

During their first fight with the Syndicate, they are mercilessly beaten down, and most likely would have been killed if the AVL's reinforcements hadn't shown up in time.

* WouldHurtAChild: Underminer has no problem trying to strangle Tip. Later [[spoiler:he tries to kill a sedated Jack Jack as payback for the Parrs "messing with his business" earlier, justifying it by saying that Enigma didn't specify if he wanted the boy alive or dead, before Gru stops him.]]

* YouCalledMeXItMustBeSerious: Now that they're a couple, GoGo calls Wasabi "Darron" more often than she uses his nickname, showing how their relationship has grown more serious.

* KidnappedByTheAlly: [[spoiler: In order to maintain his and Lucy's cover in the Syndicate, Gru needs to kidnap Jack-Jack.]]

* UnskilledButStrong: Big Hero 9 is made up of highly intelligent and/or skilled people who can take down every day criminals with ease, but they (with the exception of Violet, who's been fighting crime since her early teens) have only been superheroes for a few months. The Syndicate is made up of villains with years, even decades of practice. As such, they are able to incapacitate (and almost kill) several team members in minutes. They are forced to retreat when Megamind, the Incredibles, Frozone, and the Monsters (all of whom have been fighting crime for years) even the odds.

* BrokenPedestal: Metro Man to Bob. Bob's anger at Megamind quickly transfers to Wayne after learning the latter faked his death to become a singer. As he puts it, the latter essentially ditched his city and left it at Megamind's mercy because he was in the midst of a "mid-life crisis". The pedestal is broken enough to the point where Bob actually ''wishes'' Megamind killed Metro Man. When Big Hero 9 hears about this from Violet, their reactions aren't as extreme, but they are just as disappointed as Bob is.

** Averted with the Syndicate, who know that three of the Big Hero 9's members are literal children, but try to kill them anyway.

** Megamind holds this attitude about his past actions as a villain, especially the incident involving Titan (which Margo is quick to remind him of when she meets him).

* CallingTheOldManOut: Abigail does this to her father in Chapter 9 when visiting him in jail, calling him out for using her as an excuse for his actions in the previous story.

* ComesGreatResponsibility: Bob believes in this strongly, which is why he's so unhappy to learn that Metro Man faked his death to become a singer of all things.

* MindRape: Mezzmerella inflicts this on Riley. Violet theorizes that her powers might have made it even ''worse'', and even a couple of hours or so later, she's in a TroubledFetalPosition, haunted by the experience.

* AdaptationExpansion: The story expands on the backstories of Bob and Helen in Chapter 27, particularly how each of them gained their powers.

* TheAtoner: Part of Megamind's motivation for his hero turn is to atone for all the people who were killed by Titan during his rampage.

* ItsAllMyFault: Hiro blames himself for the team getting curbstomped by the Syndicate, due to Enigma copying his technology.

* LetsYouAndHimFight: In chapter 14, the Incredibles and Frozone spar against Team Monster, Megamind, and Minion. Mr. Incredible is especially eager to fight Megamind.
* LightFeminineAndDarkFeminine: Lucy Wilde and Mirage.

* LockedOutOfTheLoop: Lucy and the assembled heroes don't know that Megamind didn't kill Metro Man and that he's still alive. Granted, it makes sense for the heroes to not know about that, but Dicker and Mirage are surprised that Lucy is completely unaware of it, leading them to assume that she never got that memo.
