->''This is the Island of Sodor as you've never seen it before.''
-->--Synopsis, ''Thomas Abridged''
[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11527582/1/Thomas-Abridged ''Thomas Abridged'']] is a WesternAnimation/ThomasTheTankEngine FanFiction by [[https://www.fanfiction.net/u/3446187/ToonGuy ToonGuy]], and [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin as you might expect from the title,]] it's TheAbridgedSeries in writing form, of the adventures of everyone's favourite tank engine with an attention deficit.

As the page quote says, this Island of Sodor is quite different to the one we're used to on screen; the engines are decidedly more cynical and arrogant, and in some cases more alcoholic, than their TV conterparts. The Fat Controller also has it worse off, having to deal with his unruly engines, his matriarchial and irritable wife, and avoiding an aneurysm.

Along the way, though, a much, ''much'' DarkerAndEdgier subplot starts in Season 2, which at first concerns [[spoiler: the ghost of a background engine and Diesel getting possessed on his first week]], and gets more and more significant as the story continues.

Filled to bursting point with British humour and a healthy dosage of the CerebusRollercoaster, one of the longest Thomas 'fics on fanfiction.net is most certainly worth a read.

The author has also written two (as of yet uncomplete) side-'fics; one is [[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11637312/1/Now-Playing-So-Don-t-Go ''Now Playing, So Don't Go'']], where a Humanised cast try to put on a production of ''Peter Pan'' in a run-down Knapford theatre, the keyword being 'try'. !!CUE THE TROPES!

* TenMinuteRetirement: Edward disappears at the height of the mayoral race, only to return to business a few days later.
* TheAce: Several characters, namely James, Thomas, and Gordon, see themselves as this.
* AchievementsInIgnorance: Including, but not limited to:
** The engines being able to shrug, write and punch despite the fact that they can only move their wheels and faces.
** Thomas somehow being accepted as a candidate for the Mayor of Sodor.
* AddedAlliterativeAppeal: Henry, Gordon and James carry over their trademark catchphrase from the TV series of:
-->'''Gordon''': Disgraceful!
-->'''James''': Disgusting!
-->'''Henry''': Despicable!
-->({{Beat}})
-->'''James''': That was nice, the way you did that.
-->'''Henry''': You think? You know, maybe that should be our thing, you know, Gordon says Disgraceful, you say...
* AffectionateParody: Of the TV series. All and any inconsistencies in the show are ruthlessly picked apart, including:
** James being seen before his introduction, and whenever he tries to talk before the events of "Thomas and the Breakdown Train" the other engines refuse to acknowledge his existence or call him by his correct name.
** Terrence the Tractor being a PerpetualSmiler, making Thomas wonder if there's something wrong with him.
** Rheneas being seen on the Skarloey Railway when he's meant to be at the works getting an overhaul, so for the first half of Season 4 the narrator calls him "Rheneas' stunt double".
* AndIMustScream: [[spoiler: Marklin's fate, pre-Diesel. The details of what happened exactly aren't told to us, but a botched operation at the Works is what caused his death and left him, to quote the narrator, "gutted like a fish". After that, his restless spirit wandered the area, before he left for the Other Railway.]]
* AlmightyJanitor: Duck may just be a tank engine, albeit a skilled and level-headed tank engine who's belittled and underestimated by the bigger engines, but he knows a ''hell'' of a lot about Sodor, especially concerning [[spoiler: the Magic Railroad and Lady.]]
* AscendedExtra: Many, ''many'' smaller characters in the Railway Series and the TV series get more developed personalities and larger roles, like Jinty and Pug, the unnamed engines seen in "Edward's Day Out" in "The Three Railway Engines", the Fat Director, and characters like P.T. Boomer and Marklin that didn't even appear.
* BadassGrandpa: Edward is one of the oldest engines in the 'fic, and can certainly pull his weight in doing work and controlling Bill and Ben. [[spoiler: Not at all surprising considering what he could do in the past.]]
* BerserkButton: James has two: before his proper introduction, the other engines deliberately getting his name wrong, and the other engines mimicking his pronunciation of "Rabbish!"
* BigBad: The Fat Director is the one at the head of the Other Railway, and is also [[spoiler: the one leading the operation to capture Lady from Sodor.]]
* CameBackWrong: [[spoiler: Marklin is confined to the spirit world after dying in an operation at a workshop on the mainland, but he returns to haunt Sodor and the Other Railway.]]
* CerebusRollercoaster: The 'fic changes in tone repeatedly, and often with little contrast; see CerebusSyndrome below.
*CerebusSyndrome: The 'fic gets hit with this '''hard''' in Season 2, when it's revealed that [[spoiler: Diesel was possessed.]] It gets LighterAndSofter during Season 3, though, but it gets DarkerAndEdgier at the end of 3 and throughout 4, where we get to see [[spoiler: the Other Railway in more detail and learn more about Edward's past]].
* ChekhovsGunman: Marklin makes a few, largely unimportant appearances throughout Season 1. [[spoiler: He returns to possess Diesel in Season 2 and becomes a major player on the Other Railway.]]
* ClusterFBomb: Being George Carlin, Henry's (and later Percy's) driver is susceptible to this.
* ColdBloodedTorture: [[spoiler: The Germans do this to Eagle, Albert, Biggles and Thistle in Edward's WWII flashback.]]
* CouchGag: Throughout Seasons 1 and 2, and part of Season 3, each chapter opened with a conversation between the narrator and the producers. This was eventually phased out, and chapters now just start with "CUE THE THEME!"
* CrapsackWorld: The Other Railway is dark, grimy, and never sunny. Oh, and it's populated by "fakes", which are mindless clones of Sodor diesels [[spoiler: with a taste for human blood]], and it's also the headquarters of an operation trying to [[spoiler: take over Sodor and capture Lady.]]
* CurseCutShort: Many times.
* DarkerAndEdgier: Things take a turn for the serious when "A Close Shave" reveals that [[spoiler: Diesel was possessed by the vengeful spirit of Marklin]]. The latter is confined to the sideplot for the rest of the season and throughout Season 3 and 4, but still keeps a heavy presence.
* DeadpanSnarker: Percy, and occasionally Edward and Toby, are prone to this.
* DemonicPossession: [[spoiler: The ghost of Marklin does this to Diesel.]]
* DenserAndWackier: Than the TV series.
* DrivesLikeCrazy: Bulgy and George are this. [[spoiler: It doesn't exactly help that their driver works for the Fat Director.]]
* FamilyUnfriendlyViolence: Some of the major accidents are described in a lot of detail, as is [[spoiler: the torture of Edward's friends by Germans during the Second World War.]]
* GrandTheftMe: [[spoiler: Marklin takes control of Diesel in an attempt to have Duck killed.]]
* GratuitousGerman: Spoken by Nazis during [[spoiler: Edward's WWII flashback.]]
* GoneHorriblyRight: A tank locomotive signing up as a mayoral candidate seems absurd, but every one of his friends bar [[OnlySaneMan Edward]], initially, happily support it, and ''somehow'' Thomas becomes one of the prime candidates for the Mayor of Sodor.
* HeelFaceTurn: After [[spoiler: getting possessed by an evil spirit, and then exorcised,]] Diesel goes from downright evil to relatively kind. Duck still doesn't trust him, though.
* IncompetenceInc: Even more so than in the TV series.
** The Fat Director sees the Other Railway as this.
* ItMakesSenseInContext: The Fat Controller purchases anti-aircraft guns for Sodor, despite the fact that the Cold War is over.
* KnightOfCerebus: [[spoiler: Marklin, a background engine who made but a footnote in the early seasons and dies following a botched operation on the Other Railway at the end of Season 1, is arguably one of the most frightening characters the 'fic has come across so far. He makes his first non-corporeal appearance possessing Diesel in an attempt to kill Duck, and he seems to be one of the masterminds behind what goes on at the Other Railway. From then on, he appears as a dark, shadowy engine-like shape that makes even ''Duck'' shudder. Hell, even his speech is in bold writing to make it stand out!]]
* LethalKlutz: Bill and Ben are so accident-prone that they've managed to burn down Brendam harbour. ''Three times.''
* LoadsAndLoadsOfCharacters: All of the characters from the TV series make appearances, plus some RWS-exclusive ones and a lot of people that either made miniscule appearances in the TVS and RWS, plus a few that were invented by the author.
* LongRunner: It's one of the longest Thomas 'fics on fanfiction.net.
* ManipulativeBastard: Diesel is this during the "Duck & Diesel Trilogy". [[spoiler: He was possessed at the time, explaining why he isn't like this in future appearances.]]
* MoodWhiplash: See CerebusSyndrome and CerebusRollercoaster above.
* NeverLiveItDown: Nobody lets James forget the time that he mispronounced "rubbish" as "Rabbish!"
* OnlySaneMan: Edward and Duck are undoubtedly these amongst the engines. Toby is also this, to a lesser extent.
* ParodyFic
* PrecisionFStrike: Duck does this on occasion to help get a point across.
* PunctuatedForEmphasis: When a particularly heavy cliffhanger is dropped, the "TO BE CONTINUED" is this.
* SanitySlippage: Edward goes through this when the Fat Controller makes him work with Bill and Ben.
* SealedEvilInACan: [[spoiler: The reason why Diesel was so horrible to Duck in the D&D arc of Season 2? He was possessed by the vengeful and angry spirit of Marklin. He's later exorcised, though.]]
* ShoutOut: There are a couple references to Literature/IvorTheEngine and Franchise/StarWars scattered throughout the 'fic and ''Now Playing, So Don't Go''.
* SoulJar: [[spoiler: Diesel becomes this for the ghost of Marklin.]]
* TeamDad: Edward and [=BoCo=] are begrudgingly this for Bill and Ben.
* ThoseTwoGuys: Bill and Ben are almost always seen together.
* ThoseWackyNazis: Averted; the Germans that [[spoiler: torture and kill Edward's friends during WWII are ''not'' PlayedForLaughs.]]
** Played straight when Oliver calls Bulgy a Nazi.
* WhamEpisode: "A Close Shave" reveals that [[spoiler: Diesel was possessed by the angry and vengeful ghost of Marklin.]]
* TheWoobie: It's not hard to feel sorry for Edward, considering just how much idiocy he has to put up with on a day-to-day basis and [[spoiler: the trauma that he suffered during the Second World War.]]
