The Three Witches' War has begun.begun.

''The Morrigan'' is a ''Anime/MobileSuitGundamTheWitchFromMercury'' fic by [[https://archiveofourown.org/users/Jerkus/pseuds/Jerkus Jerkus]] set in an alternate universe where Sabina Fardin and Nika Nanaura had long carried feelings for each other and, rather than continue to play pawns in a larger game, eloped together, stealing the Lfrith-Ur and escaping to Earth. In doing so, they set in motion a series of events that would plunge the solar system into a three-way war, a war they fight on the front lines in piloting the newly rebuilt Gundam Morrigan.

The fic is in part a continuation of Jerkus' earlier fics, ''Put Up Your Dukes'' and ''Simple Machines''. While those exist as their own independent stories, they explore the beginnings of the romantic relationships between Felsi Rollo and Chuatury Panlunch, and Nika Nanaura and Sabina Fardin respectively, which carry over into ''The Morrigan''.

Jerkus has also written ''Their Fond Pageant'', an anthology of (occasionally NSFW) sidestories set in the Three Witches War AU.

The story along with its predecesors and sidestories can be read [[https://archiveofourown.org/series/3694561 here]] on Website/ArchiveOfOurOwn.

!!''The Morrigan'' provides examples of:
* AbusiveParents:
** As in the show, Vim Jeturk. Guel is initially in denial about it, since facing the fact that his father was an abusive bastard would likewise mean that the family legacy he's trying to rebuild is rotten. He comes more to terms with it over time, acknowledging that his father was not a good man, and that his continued attempts at pleasing him were done in an attempt at getting back the father he remembers from his childhood.
** Shaddiq too has few good memories of his adopted father. While he doesn't mention any specific instances of abuse, it's implied that Sarius was perfectionist and demanding, as he denied Shaddiq's only competitor for heir on the basis of a minor lip deformity.
* AccidentalPervert: [[spoiler:The Morrigan tries her best to give Nika and Sabina privacy, but she can feel anything they feel, and they frequently have sex in her cockpit without knowing that she's sapient and can feel them. At least two cases resulted in the Morrigan spasming in pleasure in accordance with Nika. It becomes less accidental later, as Nika and Sabina embrace the idea of the Morrigan joining them]].
* AccidentalProposal: In chapter 26, Felsi assures Chuchu that she would come with her if she defected to Dawn of Fold, "sickness and health". A blushing Chuchu asks if she's proposing, and Felsi quickly clarifies she's not - but might in the future.
* AccidentalTruth: Norea figures that the best place for TalkingToTheDead with Sophie is in the Morrigan's cockpit, since it used to be her Gundam. [[spoiler:Given that the Morrigan ''is'' Sophie, she's entirely correct]].
* AceCustom: Chuchu and the Grassley valkyries all have unique mobile suits, as commanders of their respective squadrons.
* AdaptationalExpansion: The fic expands a bit on the other Enhanced Persons aside from #4 and #5. #2 is described as dissociative, was apparently religious, and peeled his own face off; #3 was depressed and apathetic after #2's death and was killed for being catatonic; #6 was the most emotive of them but was executed after trying to kill the original Elan. We also learn that #4 and #5 were close friends.
* AdaptationalSexuality:
** Rouji, who in the original has no indication of his sexuality, is here implied to be aromantic, asexual, or both, based on his mutterings that "allos" (allosexuals or alloromantics, people who experience sexual or romantic attraction) are weird.
** Likewise, there's no indication that Guel is anything other than straight. Here, he's definitely bi or pan.
* AdaptationSpeciesChange: Downplayed since she's still human, but in canon Norea had no indication of being anything but baseline human. Here, she's an enhanced person like Elan.
* AffablyEvil: Her villainy is debatable, but Nika is surprised at how friendly [[spoiler:Prospera]] is despite her horrifying reputation. Not only is she happy to engage in friendly conversation, but she casually uses affectionate nicknames and makes puns.
* AffectionateNickname:
** Chuchu calls Felsi "Pineapple", a holdover from ''Put Up Your Dukes''.
** Felsi takes to calling [[spoiler:Sabina]] "Bibi". She in turn calls her "Sissy", based on both the last two letters of Felsi's name, and an affectionate insult.
* AffluentAscetic: Guel, despite being vice president of a corporate union spanning the entire solar system, lives in a small apartment on the Asticassia campus. He had enough of giant cavernous mansions in his childhood.
* AIIsACrapshoot: Peil Grade is less an actual AI and more a very large algorithm, and as such is limited by its code and input. Similar to real-life generative algorithms (often called art AI), it struggles in creating something that isn't based on existing art, it can't truly distinguish humans from each other, and a part of its original code means that it shuts down when dealing with nudity.
* TheAllConcealingI: The second intermission follows Renee Costa as she runs into her ex, Lilique. They have coffee together, and Lilique is surprisingly open about her regrets regarding their relationship, giving Renee hope that they might try again. All of this is told from first person POV to hide that [[spoiler:"Renee" is actually Henao, experiencing Renee's memories and personality due to the TAT system]].
* AllohistoricalAllusion:
** Just like in the penultimate episode of the show, Felsi stops two feuding friends from killing each other and screams at them for being stupid, even using some of the same dialogue. Only this time, said friends are [[spoiler:Chuchu and Nika]] instead of Guel and Lauda.
--->'''Felsi:'''You two are so stupid! Are you both trying to die over an argument between friends?! If that’s your idea of a joke, it’s not funny at all!
** When Norea explains that she can't launch the Pharact due to the presence of Cathedra troops, Elan imagines her being vaporized in the cockpit by a Cathedra sharpshooter, which is exactly how she dies in the show.
* AmbiguousGender: The Cathedra honeypot in chapter 19 goes unnamed and ungendered.
* AndThenWhat: Shaddiq confides in Guel that he's worried he's been on his quest to help Earth for so long that he's forgotten the end, only thinking about the means. If he reaches his goal, he doesn't know if he'll know it.
* AnimalMotifs:
** Suletta is associated with hounds. Her cane has the head of a dog, her callsign is Barghest (a black hound of ill omen from Celtic mythology), and many within the CAUL think of her only as Miorine's dog who goes wherever her master tells her to. Suletta herself doesn't mind this comparison, but is frustrated as being dehumanized.
** Chuchu tends to be associated with rats; Small, ferocious, and fiercely protective of her young. She has a torso tattoo of a rat and her squadron is called the Bilge Rats. And like a rat, she [[spoiler:flees the sinking ship that is CAUL]].
** The Morrigan [[spoiler:Rebuild is painted in dark colours, wears a feathered cape (actually felchettes), has a cry reminiscent of a crow or raven, and is created from pieces salvaged from other mobile suits similar to a carrion bird feeding on the dead, all of it giving it a corvid motif]].
** [[spoiler:The Nemain has an insect motif, having boosters thin as insect wings, spikes in its palms, bit-staves that latch onto an enemy like tics, and its primary weapon is a stinger that injects poison. It goes with its theme of decay and pestilence]].
* ArtificialFamilyMember: Nika and Sabina refer to the Morrigan as part of their family, initially as a kid but as it becomes more apparent that the Morrigan has some kind of self-awareness, they start thinking of it as their lover instead. [[spoiler:The Morrigan herself returns the sentiment in full]].
* AttackDrone:
** [[spoiler:Morrigan Rebuild's flechettes are actually bit-staves, but unlike the Aerial's Escutcheon, they have only enough tech and intelligence to pursue a target and return when called. Jerkus also hints that some of the flechettes have special abilities]].
** [[spoiler:Nemain's twelve small Cliona drones are smaller than most bit staves, have tendrils of permets following behind them, and are kept inside its bracer when not in use. With these tendrils they can link together to form the Ochain shield, or the Neit whip. They also have the ability to drain the energy of attacks that hit them in both forms, and once charged can attach to an enemy mobile suit to fry the pilot with a datastorm]].
* TheAtoner: Guel, having seen the oppression and exploitation of Earth firsthand, wants to return his company from weapons manufacturers to its roots as a manufacturer of construction equipment who treats its workers fairly.
* AuthorAppeal: Apparently the [[VampiricDraining Beguir-Dearg Du]] exists entirely because of the author's love of vampires.
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: Whenever she goes into combat, Norea takes a moment to analyze the opponent, taking note of their potential abilities, how many there are, what they can do, and how best to approach them.
* BadassCreed: The Dawn of Fold motto; ''Nemo me Impune Lacessit''. "None may strike me with impunity", taken from the House of Stewart that ruled Scotland from 1371 to 1714. Not so coincidentally, it's also the motto of the House of Montressor from ''Literature/TheCaskOfAmontillado''.
* BadassNormal: Felsi and Chuchu actually get close to [[spoiler:destroying the Morrigan]] (and may have succeeded had Felsi not ended the fight), while piloting a perfectly ordinary non-gundam mobile suit.
* BaitAndSwitch: Chapter 8 opens on a dream or flashback seemingly told from Ireesha's example. Then the linebreak hits, and it turns out that ''Henao'' was the point of view, as she's experiencing Ireesha's dreams.
* BarehandedBladeBlock: [[spoiler:Felsi, piloting the Demi-Balor's baori pack, catches and breaks the Morrigan's sword mid-swing]].
* BatmanGambit: Miorine pulls of a rather impressive ''nested'' one to stop the Space Assembly League from using their WaveMotionGun on Quiet Zero. Through Chuchu and Felsi, she [[spoiler:provides the Dawn of Fold with evidence that the SAL are planning on doing it, treating the potential destruction of Earth as a beneficial consequence. As Miorine expected, Nika releases these documents to the public, and Miorine immediately condemsn them as fraudulent lies and fabrications, declaring that the Space Assembly League would never do something so heinous. Again as she expected, the SAL immediately put their plans on hold, or they'd lose any and all support they may have had]].
* BattleCouple: Several couples in the fic pilot mobile suits together.
** Nika and Sabina pilot the Morrigan together, having borderline telepathy due to its GUND-format.
** Chuchu and Felsi command a squad of CAUL demi-barding pilots together. While they lack Nika and Sabina's actual borderline telepathy, they are so in sync that they might as well have it. While Chuchu is the Demi-Balor's pilot, Felsi provides backup by piloting its Baori pack.
** In chapter 31, Norea and Elan [[spoiler:after confessing their love]] pilot the Pharact, taging in and out whenever one is exhausted.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: ''Put Up Your Dukes'' reveals that Felsi's loyalty to Guel was based on an event in their childhood, when he listened patiently to her concerns over being forced into an unhappy marriage and then prevented it by loudly chewing out her parents (insulting her in the process, but she was fine with it).
* BeenThereShapedHistory: Guel's family built the first space elevator and were integral to the early push into space.
* BelligerentSexualTension: Felsi and Chuchu think that Guel and Shaddiq have this going on. Miorine think they just hate each other, but admit that those are not mutually exclusive.
* BeneathNotice: Suletta's veil makes her blind and robs her of individuality by hiding her face. The silver lining of this is that people tend to forget that she's there and that there is nothing wrong with her ''hearing'', resulting in her overhearing a lot of private conversations.
* BerserkButton: For Suletta, referring to her by her maiden name instead of Rembran gets on her nerves, though she keeps herself to TranquilFury and veiled threats at worst.
* BestFriend: As in the show, Felsi and Petra are thick as thieves. Petra actually also extends this friendship to Felsi's girlfriend Chuchu, and the three regularily hang out.
* BilingualBonus: When Shaddiq and Guel drink together, Shaddiq says ''Sláinte'', "Health" in Irish, and Guel answers ''Na Zdrowie'', Polish for "To [your] health". Both are the respective languages' version of Cheers.
* BoringButPractical: Downplayed since there are hardly any circumstances where a giant robot would be considered "boring", but the Morrigan eschews any fancy gimmicks or bit-staves in favour of simply being a hard-hitting robot that hits hard and moves fast, all done to make the strain on the pilot as low as possible. [[spoiler:The Rebuild is a bit fancier, having a cloak and bit staves, but still not much more than a normal mobile suit]].
* BrainUploading:
** [[spoiler:The personality in the Morrigan is Sophie Pulone, though she doesn't quite remember being Sophie]].
** [[spoiler:Chapter 31 ''strongly'' implies that the same is true for Elan #4 in the Pharact]].
* BreadEggsMilkSquick: In ''Their Fond Pageant'', Nika describes Belmeria as "an excellent doctor. Smart, professional and with a surprisingly good bedside manner. Shame about all the human rights violations."
* BreakTheCutie: Nika in the show was an idealist who dreamed of uniting Earth and Space in peaceful cooperation. In the fic, the trauma of being kidnapped by Shaddiq, kept in a room with a woman that wanted to kill her, never being found by her friends at Earth House, the escape from Asticassia, and every event since has broken her to a very angry woman who is fully onboard with using violence and killing to fight for Earth.
* BrickJoke: On her way to Earth as part of her decision to become TheHedonist, Norea picks up a bucket of colourful novelty popcorn. Later, Secelia, who's in the same area, mentions that she's only had a bucket of presumably the same popcorn to eat all day. Norea liked it, Secelia found it wretched.
* CainAndAbel: Suletta and Ericht are generally just FriendlyEnemy. Chapter 22, however, [[spoiler:escalates their friendly banter into a violent and borderline murderous fight, as Suletta is furious that Ericht would kill innocents so lackadaisically, while Ericht thinks Suletta is stupidly naïve for not seeing the realities of the war around them]].
* CallForward: In a flashback in the third intermission, Maisie tells Ireesha that she can't die because if she does Maisie will go crazy. Sure enough, Ireesha lives... but Maisie does not, and it has a clear negative impact on Ireesha's mental state.
* CapedMecha: The Morrigan has a cape of iron chains. [[spoiler:The Morrigan Rebuild gets a FashionableAsymmetry shoulder cape carrying flechettes]].
* CategoryTraitor: A lot of Spacians prejudiced against Earthians see Felsi as a traitor to her kin because she's dating Chuchu and takes her side in arguments about Earthian oppression. Felsi, for her part, fully embraces and revels in it, [[spoiler:even defecting to Dawn of Fold]].
* CaughtWithYourPantsDown: Downplayed in that she wasn't actually caught, but in ''Their Fond Pageant'', Nika has just finished masturbating to a video of her wife in the Morrigan when Olcott calls her to ask why the gundam just shrieked and expelled smoke.
-->She didn't think there was a technical way to explain that your Gundam had just had a screaming orgasm.
* CentralTheme: Using people. Various factions and characters, including Grassley, Dominicus, Shaddiq, Ochs Earth, Peil, and Prospera, use people, especially children, as tools, molding them and cutting out parts of them until they fit their purposes. All of the protagonists are victims of this on some level, and working through it in different manners, wether that be unlearning and recovering from their trauma, continuing the cycle, or breaking it.
-->'''Nika:''' What Grassley did to you. What Shaddiq continued to do. What Dominicus did to Olcott, and Peil did to Elan, and Ochs Earth did to Norea and Sophie. Whatever other sins I have to commit, I won't ever use people like that.
* ChainPain: The Morrigan has a cape made from iron chains, each link larger than a human. It's used mostly to store weapons, but can be a weapon in the midst of battle.
* CharacterDevelopment: Norea has undergone a lot, going from the stoic-but-seethingly furious girl in the show who wanted to kill Spacians on sight, to a much more considerate and thoughtful girl who carefully considers her options before doing something rash. [[spoiler:Just before the fight with Nemain, she realizes to her pleasant surprise that she actually doesn't want anyone to die anymore]].
* ChaseSequence: The middle part of chapter 29 consists of Elan escaping the Asticassia police [[spoiler:after tazing Secelia because she realized he was a fake]].
* ChekhovsGun: In chapter 24, Miorine mentions a few unusual permet types, namely Lonely Permet, which seeks out bonds with standard permet. Come chapter 31, and we see this in action with [[spoiler:the Nemain's primary weapon, the Gae Bolg]].
* ColdBloodedTorture: Much of chapter 32 is about Sabina torturing a former enforcer of the prison colony the DOF just liberated for information on [[spoiler:the whereabouts of Chuchu's papa Nanami]].
* CombatPragmatist: Once it becomes obvious that Suletta [[spoiler:might be good enough to beat Ericht in a fair fight, Ericht distracts her with an AwfulTruth before chopping all of the Schwarzette's limbs off]].
* ConflictingLoyalty: Chuchu believes in Miorine and that she has everyone's best interests at heart, which is why she fights for the CAUL. If it wasn't for Miorine, she would almost certainly join the Dawn of Fold since she's Earthian and knows spacian oppression first hand.
* ConnectedAllAlong: A minor case. Guel mentions that his great-grandfather was from Six Points, Chuchu's hometown, and might have played a part in making the place a city.
* ContrivedCoincidence: The officiant at Sabina and Nika's wedding happened to be [[spoiler:Chuchu's papa Nanami, and the free port they got married at happened to be what remains of Fólkvangr]].
* CopHater: Most characters who grew up on Earth understandably has a dim view of law enforcement. Aliyah apparently especially loathes cops, and is happy to delay them when she sees Elan on the run even without knowing the context.
* {{Cult}}:
** Ericht's worshippers grow into one of these at some point between book 1 and 2, calling themselves Aeriali. As their [[spoiler:Dawn of Fold allies grow into a proper government, the Aeriali grows into a proper church]].
** Peil is describes as a cult worshipping the company's AI, Peil Grade.
* DamnedByFaintPraise: Nika describes Felsi's electric guitar playing as "...passionate."
* DeathByAdaptation:
** Just in the fifth chapter, a flashback shows that Kenanji Avery and Maisie May are both dead, killed in Nika and Sabina's escape from Asticassia. The start of the next chapter establishes that Delling Rembran died from his injuries at the Plant Quetta attack.
** [[spoiler:Naji Geor Hija is killed by Ireesha in chapter 15]].
** Golneri, one of the Peil [=CEOs=] is stated to have died in an accident between books 1 and 2. [[spoiler:Kal and Nevola follow her in Ericht's attack at the Peil HQ]].
* DeathFromAbove: In chapter 9, [[spoiler:the Morrigan picks off the bilge rats by climbing a skyscraper and attacking from above]].
* DeityOfHumanOrigin: Ericht is already nigh-godlike, but the endgame of Prospera's plan would expand Quiet Zero's influence across the solar system, allowing her to appear in any place and control any technology she wants. [[AGodIAmNot Ericht herself worries about what this will mean for her humanity]].
* DisabledInTheAdaptation:
** Suletta is not technically blind, but she has to wear blinders that flood her vision with junk data, so she might as well be. She uses a white cane for navigation.
** Nika's permet left arm is only intermittently mobile, needing to keep it in a sling most of the time.
** Guel suffers debilitating back pains, though it's ambiguous if it's a physical disability, brought on by guilt for not saving Seethia during his time on Earth, or even if he's genuinely haunted by her ghost.
* DisappearedDad: Chuchu's Papa Nanami was working in space when Quiet Zero's blockade struck, and has been unable to get back to Earth. [[spoiler:She eventually finds that he's working with a crime syndicate operating out of Fólkvangr that has been supplying Cathedra]].
* DissonantSerenity:
** '"I am going to fucking beat you to death," Secelia said brightly.'
** Elan's reaction to [[spoiler:the Peil headquarters being vapourized]] is a very neutral "Oh no, this is terrible", followed by equally deadpan claims to be completely devastated when confronted about it.
* DivertingPower: The main difference between the Morrigan and other gundams, and why it requires two pilots. When it enters higher permet scores, rather than empowering the entire system, Nika directs permet to the parts that needs it, which reduces the strain on both pilots from deadly to simply painful.
* TheDividual: Invoked. Since the Peil Grade AI has a hard time distinguishing between people who look and act similar, Elan and Norea make a conscious attempt at mirroring each other, styling their hair identically and wearing one of Elan's earrings each.
* DragonWithAnAgenda: Over the course of the second book it becomes steadily more apparent that he valkyries are not fully under Shaddiq's control. Though their exact goals are so far unknown, they include [[spoiler:making Shaddiq pay for letting Maisie die due to his arrogance]].
* DramaticIrony:
** The reader learns way before anyone else that [[spoiler:Sophie Pulone and the Morrigan are one and the same. Sabina and Nika suspect that the Morrigan is sentient, but signs of it are infrequent enough that they could be coincidence (implied to be Quiet Zero suppressing her), and they have no idea it's Sophie]].
** In a flashback set after the PointOfDivergence, but prior to their reunion after their breakup, Miorine wishes that for once Suletta would ignore her wishes and just come rushing to get her back. Unbeknownst to her, that's exactly what Suletta did, but just before they could reunite she was stopped and left to float in the void by her mother and sister.
* DrivenToSuicide: It's mentioned that the second enhanced person, Elan #2, ripped his own face off out of despair that God would not recognize him like this.
* DwindlingParty: The scene of the bilge rats going through the empty city in chapter 9 is like something out of a horror movie, with the Morrigan picking off demi-bardings one by one while they barely get the chance to scream over the radio.
* EliteFour:
** President Miorine's bodyguards at the onset of the war were three who remained from her father, and one fresh blood. They operate as a well-oiled machinery able to keep her safe against absurd odds.
** The dawn of fold focal characters are four; Nika, Sabina, [[spoiler:Chuchu, and Felsi]].
* EmbarassingNickname: Norea specifically decides to call the original Elan Ceres "Nolan" because he hates it.
* EmpatheticWeapon: [[spoiler:The Morrigan is on some level sapient, containing a personality that sees Nika and Sabina as its family, and can feel their sensations at times, especially Nika's permet-covered arm]].
* EvenEvilHasStandards: The SAL still want to use the WaveMotionGun from the show on Quiet Zero, but even they have to admit that doing so when there's a solid risk of destroying Earth, and even a best case scenario woud devastate the planet, is a bit too risky. They are warming up to the idea as a last resort, though. [[spoiler:It gets subverted heavily later on when a number of SAL documents get leaked revealing that they ''want'' the devastation of Earth because it would benefit Space economically]].
* EveryoneCanSeeIt: After Guel and Shaddiq's makeout session, the tension between them is so obvious that even the blind Suletta can tell.
* EvilLaugh: Lilique jokes that she's actually only pretending to be nice to manipulate people, before letting out a comical "Mwahahaha".
* EyeLaser: The Demi-Balor, Chuchu and Felsi's mobile suit, has an array of lenses on its head that can fire off a powerful energy beam.
* TheFaceless: InUniverse. Suletta has a sort of holographic projection that displays a dense mesh of junk data in front of her face at all times which hides her face behind a black veil. Unlike other examples of the trope, she can't see out through it either, rendering her effectively blind.
* FairytaleMotifs:
** The Morrigan is described as an undead revenant, to form a trifecta with the Aerial (vengeful ghost) and Calibarn (savage beast).
** Grassley seems to model itself on medieval motifs, describing the Valkyries as Shaddiq's "knights" and even designing the outside of their orphanage compound as castle wall.
* FallenHero: Jeturk Heavy Machinery started out as a company known for putting their workers' safety and well-being first. By the present, they're one of the worst oppressors of Earth.
* FallGuy: Because of the circumstances of their escape from Asticassia, and some choice wording on Shaddiq's part, Nika and Sabina ended up taking the full blame for Plant Quetta and the Rumble Ring attack.
* FashionableAsymmetry: Elan and Norea wear one earring each. [[spoiler:They actually contain data drives they use to smuggle information in and out of Peil, along with a virus that knocks out Peil Grade for a short while]].
* FauxAffablyEvil: How Shaddiq describes Grassley; They act nice, but in reality they're just repackaging old atrocities in shiny new wrapping. Of note, the orphanage Shaddiq grew up in was marketed as a humanitarian effort to bring Earthians out of poverty, but was in reality basically a eugenics program.
--But that was Grassley's ethos, writ-large; an opulent facade over clinical violence.
* FictionalDisability: Spontaneous Permetic Growth, named in ''Their Fond Pageant'', is a rare condition where humans develop permet growths across their body, causing paralysis. Prospera suffers it in both her legs, and Nika has an unusual benign case in her arm.
* FinishingEachOthersSentences:
** Felsi and Chuchu apparently do a variant. Whenever one calls Guel and Shaddiq's bickering "palpable sexual tension", the other will chime in with "Palpable".
** The Valkyries do a variant by [[spoiler:speaking in each others' voices while using the TAT]].
* FlippingTheBird: Ericht does a hillariously elaborate one when Suletta chops off the Aerial's arm; She tells her sister to look at the lost arm, only to flip her off with it.
* ForcedToWatch: During the NEAR attack, the Morrigan turns a destroyed mobile suit's head so that its cameras can view the ensuing massacre, presumably so CAUL high command can watch it later.
* FragileSpeedster: Both the Morrigan and the Pharact are at different points stripped down to the skeleton for the sake of speed and agility, sacrificing both armour and weaponry.
* FreudianExcuse: It's mentioned that Renee was abandoned by her parents as a child, left sick and alone in a ruined building. This informs her later pathological fear of being alone and need to be loved.
* FreudianSlip: Miorine nearly calls the Peil [=CEOs=] hags before catching herself.
* FriendlyEnemy: Suletta and Ericht will fight when the situation calls for it, but they both would much rather just be siblings, and their "fights" are more about distracting each other while the actual battle is fought around them.
* FunWithAcronyms:
** The Colonial Allied Unification League, or CAUL, is a coalition between the Benerit Group led by Miorine Rembran, and the Space Assembly League.
** The Dawn of Fold's alliance with [[spoiler:Quiet Zero and various off-Earth fronts]] is called the Near Earth Union, or NEU.
* GambitPileup: In addition to the three-way war between Dawn of Fold, Quiet Zero, and CAUL, there is a ''lot'' of scheming going on. Miorine has multiple schemes to preserve as many lives as possible, Norea and Elan are working towards their own freedom from Peil, Cathedra remains in the background with their own schemes, and then there's the mysterious black-clad faction who tried to assassinate Miorine and destroyed Folkvángr, and the equally mysterious Goodfellow who opposes them.
* GenerationXerox: In a flashback, Miorine realizes that her treatment of Suletta during their breakup was not so different from how Delling treated her; Ignoring her agency, making decisions on her behalf, and refusing to explain or give a reason, all in the service of supposedly protecting her.
* GenreRefugee: Felsi Rollo's characterization carries over from the much more comedic fic ''Put Up Your Dukes'', making her effectively a character from a romantic comedy in a dark and serious war story. [[https://twitter.com/jerkus110/status/1701936710064468077 Jerkus stated on twitter]] that they intentionally writes Felsi to be slightly cartoonier than the rest of the cast, such as appearing out of nowhere or [[spoiler:resolving a grim and deadly conflict between former friends by calling them both stupid]].
* GetAholdOfYourselfMan: Felsi hits Chuchu (or rather her mobile suit) in the head to stop her from [[spoiler:killing or getting killed by Nika. She then apparently knocks her out cold to take over command and surrender to the Dawn of Fold]].
* GratuitousLatin:
** Miorine describes the dueling system as glorified huma trafficking with random bits of latin thrown in, in reference to the Alea Iacta Est[[note]]"The Die is Cast", attributed to Gaius Julius Caesar when he crossed the Rubicon[[/note]] used to initiate duels.
** PlayedForLaughs when Elan confesses that he considered the name Nemo, causing Norea to be surprised that he speaks Latin. Elan admits that he doesn't, but liked ''Literature/20000LeaguesUnderTheSea'', ''ComicStrip/LittleNemo'', and ''WesternAnimation/FindingNemo'' as a kid. [[spoiler:They end up using the word "Nemo" as their codephrase]].
* GroinAttack: It's mentioned that Felsi at one point kicked a guy in the crotch so hard that he got "testicular tortion" because he was racist to Chuchu.
* GoodOldFisticuffs: Chuchu's Demi-Balor has pistons in its arms that enhance its punches, fitting with its very punchy pilots.
* TheHedonist: Norea has spent most of her life being TheStoic, denying herself even the smallest of life's pleasures unless Sophie dragged her into it. After Elan talked her out of suicide, she resolved to start living, enjoying every pleasure and temptation she can in gratitude to Sophie and Elan.
--''Why had it taken her so long to realize that life was lived in moments like these? That she was here to fuck around first and work second?''
* HappilyAdopted: Naji adopted Nika as a child and cares about her deeply, and she does not appear to have anything bad to say about him. He wanted to adopt Norea and Sophie as well, but Ochs Earth would not allow him, and Norea would rather kill spacians.
* HappilyMarried: Both Suletta and Miorine and Nika and Sabina are married, and while the circumstances they live under can hardly be call happy, they love each other greatly.
* HappyFlashback: The third intermission is a flashback to Ireesha and Maisie enjoying a quiet evening together after being accepted into the Valkyries.
* HatesBeingAlone:
** [[spoiler:The Morrigan, aka. Sophie, hates being "asleep" because it means being apart from Nika and Sabina, and completely alone]].
** Renee has a pathological fear of being alone. [[spoiler:She jumps into the TAT system with both legs, and seem to suffer almost an addition to it]].
* HeavyMetalUmlaut: Elan remarks that every middle aged dad in sports bar has played "Hotel California" with their band, Midlífe Crïsïs.
* HeelFaceTurn: [[spoiler:Chuchu and Felsi defect to the Dawn of Fold in the time between book 1 and 2, having already grown disillusioned with the CAUL]].
* HellIsThatNoise: When the Morrigan uses it's water-based cooling system, it causes a sound that's usually described as banshee-like. [[spoiler:The Rebuild upgrades it to a crow-like cry, almost musical but still unsettling]].
* HeroicSacrifice: Defied. Norea always idealized the idea of dying heroically for her ideals, but since Sophie's death she has instead resolved to live and refuses to sacrifice anyone else.
* HeWhoFightsMonsters: Shaddiq may have wanted to save Earth once, but that goal is long gone and by now he only plays lipservice to it while ordering attacks that kill thousands of Earthians.
* HistoryRepeats:
** [[spoiler:The Valkyrie attack on Quinharbour is the second time that a reneage Spacian with a vendetta attacks the city behind Miorine's back, and the blame is pinned on Miorine and the Benerit group]]. Norea notices the parallel and takes great pleasure in being able to do something about it, whereas last time she simply had to sit by.
** InUniverse, Shaddiq states that taking out the SAL would require purging their entire leadership, thousands of people, comparing it to the [[UsefulNotes/RomanovsAndRevolutions murders of the Romanov family]] or the [[UsefulNotes/TheFrenchRevolution French Reign of Terror]].
** Norea and Elan's escape from Asticassia in chapter 31 mirrors Nika and Sabina doing the same two years earlier, including [[spoiler:fighting the Valkyries]].
** Nika and Sabina are uncomfortably aware that [[spoiler:the Dawn of Fold's alliance with Ericht's cult (later church) is uncomfortably similar to historical revolutions and their religious allies]].
* HiveMind: [[spoiler:The TAT system developed by Grassley and tested on Henao, Ireesha, and Renee, while intended to grant combat telepathy, functionally makes them a hivemind. While they all retain individual identities, their personalities start bleeding into each other, physically as they start talking with each others' mouths, and mentally as their memories and emotions start bleeding over]].
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: The CorruptCorporateExecutive in chapter 8 bought a high-end pacemaker that ran on Permet despite it serving no purpose, just because it was more expensive. It allows Ericht to kill him.
* HollywoodToneDeaf: Nika describes Sabina's confidence while singing as adorably misplaced.
* HonoraryUncle: Miorine calls Rajan, her father's NumberTwo, uncle.
* {{Hypocrite}}: Shaddiq claims that the reason he didn't ally with Prospera Mercury is that he remembers her attack on Quinharbour, right after [[spoiler:he ordered his own attack on Quinharbour for equally petty reasons]].
* HypocriticalHumor: At one point Norea remarks that she thought Nugen's name was Nougat. Elan admonishes her before misnaming her the same way (most likely intentionally).
--'''Elan:''' Norea, please, show some respect. Anyway Nugget is still alive.
* IJustWantToBeLoved: Renee Costa just wants someone who loves her and sees her as the most important person in the unvierse. Sadly, she ruined her relationship with Lilique, who ''did'' see her that way.
* ImCryingButIDontKnowWhy: Downplayed since it can't actually cry, but whenever [[spoiler:the Morrigan sees Sophie's grave it feels the need to]].
* TheImmodestOrgasm: Nika is rather loud when she finishes, which is part of why Nika and Sabina mostly do it in the Morrigan's soundproof cockpit. [[spoiler:This is a trait shared by the Morrigan herself, which shrieks and releases its SuperSmoke when Nika finishes]].
* InnerCircle: Miorine's circle of agents and confidantes consist of the old Dueling Committee, minus Elan but including Suletta.
* InnocentlyInsensitive: A spacian named Earlton once told Chuchu that he genuinely prefers the cities of Earth to Spacian colonies because of their grittiness, thinking it was a compliment. He got punched for it.
* InternalReveal: Suletta learns the true nature of the Elans in chapter 23.
* {{Irony}}: It's noted several times the irony that Guel, the son of the CEO of a company that manufactures weapons for oppressing Earthians, is far more dedicated to saving lives and sparing Earth as much devastation as possible than Shaddiq, who grew up in the middle of that devastation.
* ItsAllMyFault: Maybe not ''all'', but Suletta insists on taking at least part of the blame for Sophie's death, even though Ericht freely admits to having killed her.
* JavelinThrower: [[spoiler:Nemain's primary armament, the Gae Bolg, has is a beam rifle in one end and a hollow permet spear on the other, and is meant to be thrown as a ranged weapon. It was refitted from the Variable Rod Rifle of the Calibarn, replacing its thrusters (which were moved to the Nemain's back) with the spearhead]].
* KillAndReplace: Not quite that murderous, but [[spoiler:Elan knocks out Nolan using painkillers after temporarily disabling Peil Grade, taking his place and keeping him complacent under threat of death as part of his and Norea's scheme to escape]].
* KilledMidSentence: Maisie May wanted to tell Ireesha that she loved her. She didn't get to finish the sentence.
* LadykillerInLove: Renee has gone through a steady line of boyfriends, but it's obvious that she only has eyes for Lilique, who dumped her.
* TheLastDance: [[spoiler:Norea and Elan's battle with the Pharact is certainly treated as one, as they somberly realize that they might not be making it out of it alive, and confess their love for each other before deciding to go out fighting]].
* LaughingMad: After [[spoiler:she killed her first person]], Miorine collapses into maddened giggles due to her shock.
* LetsGetDangerous: Belmeria is usually a nervous, withdrawn, and apologetic woman. When she's in her element as a medical doctor, however, she becomes smug, confident, and commanding.
* LikeAnOldMarriedCouple: Elan and Norea do care deeply for each other, but spend most of their time bickering, shouting, and poking fun at each other. This is especially apparent [[spoiler:before their escape from Asticassia, when they fight over the Pharact's controls]].
* LiteraryAllusionTitle: The titles of each chapter is taken from a play by Creator/WilliamShakespeare. Chapters in book 1 are taken from ''Theater/{{Coriolanus}}'', a theater about an exiled Roman politician who goes to war against his homeland, while book 2 is taken from ''Theater/RichardIII''. In addition, each chapter opens on a quote from a poem, play, or work of literature.

** Chapter 27 opens on a quote from Emily Dickinson's ''The Rat is the Concisest Tenant''. The chapter continues Chuchu's AnimalMotif of a rat, as well as shows [[spoiler:that her father was squatting at Folkvangr]].
* LivingEmotionalCrutch:
** Norea and Elan keep each other alive and motivated, and without one the other would certainly not be able to go on.
** The remaining Valkyries (Henao, Ireesha, and Renee) see each other as their only family and will go to great lengths to keep each other safe and supported, though their relationship gets steadily more disturbing due to the [[spoiler:TAT turning them into a HiveMind]].
* TheLostLenore:
** Sophie is this to both Suletta and Norea. Suletta blames herself for her death and thinks of her as her would-be little sister, while Norea couldn't find cause to move on after her death, only saved from suicide by a desire for revenge.
** Ireesha clearly didn't take the loss of Maisie well, having gone from TheCutie to a sharp and hard woman who's thin to the point of starvation. Nearly every chapter from her perspective shows how much she misses her and is barely able to go on without her.
* LoveConfession: In chapter 29, while Elan is on the run from law enforcement, Norea jokes that he'll love her fo the escape advice she's giving him. He responds that yes, he does love her, much to both their shocks.
* MageKiller: The Witch-hunting Beguir line returns, this time with some nifty new upgrades. The new Antidote system, in particular, focuses on protecting against GUND-format abilities (such as Quiet Zero's override), and the Beguir-Dearg Du can drain permet directly from any mobile suit, gundams included.
* TheMaidenNameDebate: Suletta and Miorine apparently solved this by taking each others' last names. Suletta Rembran and Miorine Mercury.
* MakeAnExampleOfThem: The Peil hags executed Enhanced Person #6 by incinerator, and had the others watch to show them what happens to those who act disobedient.
* MaliciousMisnaming:
** Norea decides to call the original Elan Ceres "Nolan" specifically because he asks her not to.
** Shaddiq repeatedly calls Suletta "Mercury" instead of her married last name Rembran, as a way to insult her and take petty shots at her marriage while claiming it was just an accident. Suletta eventually has had enough and threatens him with violence if he doesn't stop.
** After the [[spoiler:Peil HQ attack]], Norea and Elan call Nugen "Nougat" and "Nugget" respectively.
* MaybeMagicMaybeMundane: In the third intermission, [[spoiler:Ireesha enters the datastorm fully and perceives it as an ocean containing everyone who has ever died, even interracting with the souls of Maisie May and Naji Geor Hija. While the datastorm ''has'' been known to contain the spirits of dead witches, it's unclear if what Ireesha saw was the actual hereafter, or simply a hallucination brought on by the pain]].
* MeaningfulAppearance:
** The Beguir-Dearg Du is read, because it's vampiric.
** The Morrigan [[spoiler:Rebuild]]'s black coloration and cape is meant to invoke a crow or raven.
** The [[spoiler:Nemain swaps Calibarn's white-and-red for purple-and-white, which according to the author is meant to invoke the image of the typical white Gundam hero colour, but bruised and rotted like a corpse]].
* MeaningfulName:
** Suletta's callsign while piloting the Schwarzette is "Barghest", a black hound of ill omen. Apparently it was meant as an insult from Lauda, but she likes it. It also fits rather well, as she wears a black flgihtsuit and is an ill omen for anyone facing her. "Schwarz" also means black in German.
** The Demi-Balor has an EyeLaser. Balor in Celtic mythology is a deity with one eye, and everyone who met his sight died.
** The Beguir-Dullahan's head can split into small "lantern-drones". A Dullahan is a headless horseman, which is often depicted with a jack-o-lantern as a head.
** The Beguir-Dearg Du can drain the permet from other mobile suits, and is named after a non-historical creature (as in, invented recently) reminiscent of a vampire.
** The mysterious Goodfellow takes their name from ''Theater/AMidsummerNightsDream'''s Puck, aka. Robin Goodfellow.
** Each of the Morrigan's subsystem names are taken from history or mythology. The sword is Fragarach, the sword of high king Nuada Airgetlam; It's beam vulcan wrist-shooters are Tathlum, after the slingstone of the god Lugh; and the [[spoiler:the vampiric blades taken from Beguir-Dearg Du is Weregild, after an old judicial system in Scandinavia where the perpetrator of a murder could pay money equivelant to the dead person's value, to prevent blood feuds]].
** [[spoiler:The Nemain's subsystems also have similarily meaningful names; The bladed Trichome bracer is named after hairs and spiky growths on plants; The Cliona drones after Clíodhna, the queen of the Banshees; the Ochain shield after the shield wielded by Cu Chulainn's uncle; the Neit lash after a war god married to the mythical Nemain; Catha's Eye after Catha, the Irish word for carrion crows; and the Gae Bolg primary weapon after Cu Chulainn's spear]].
* MidSeasonUpgrade: [[spoiler:Following the second Quinharbour attack, and with input and advice from Prospera, the Morrigan is retrofitted and upgraded from its bulky and mishmash heavy-duty design to the much more sleek and agile Morrigan Rebuild, using gundvölva parts. It also comes with some nifty new abilities, like using its sword to block beam weapons, a temporary cloak, and bit-staves in the form of guided flechettes]].
* AMotherToHerMen: Chuchu refers to the Bilge Rat squadron as her pups, knows their names by heart and personally grieves every death, and cares deeply about their safety. SAL's disregard for their safety is part of the reason she transfers to Miorine's command [[spoiler:and later defects]].
* MundaneUtility: Similarily to Ericht in the show, [[spoiler:Sophie can cause permet burns on anyone piloting the Morrigan. Unlike Ericht, however, Sophie uses it for sex with Nika and Sabina, causing a very small and localized permet burn to imply touch across her pilots' skin]].
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Once [[spoiler:Felsi stops them from killing each other, Nika is horrified as the realization sets in that she had been trying to kill one of her best friends]].
* MysteriousStranger: A figure who calls themselves Goodfellow has twice provided advice to characters (first Miorine, then Nanami) just before they are attacked by a mysterious black-clad faction. Their advice consists only of the word "RUN" repeated over and over.
* MythicalMotif: Loads and loads to Myth/CelticMythology.
** Of the two (so far) original Gundams in the fic, rebuilt from canon Gundams, each are named after one of the Three Morrígna, a trio of Celtic war goddesses.
*** The Morrigan is, of course, the Morrigan, goddess of war and fate and the most famous and recognizeable of the trio. She often appears in the shape of a crow, which is referenced in [[spoiler:Morrigan Rebuild's feathered cloak and crow-like shriek]]. The sound created when the Morrigan expells steam is also often described as a Banshee-scream, and the goddess Morrigan has often been associated with Banshee.
*** [[spoiler:The Nemain, rebuilt from the Calibarn, is named for the goddess or personification of the frenzied havoc of war. Nemain's pilots, the Valkyries, are also a HiveMind of three girls, which fit with how Nemain is sometimes thought to be an aspect of Badb Catha, another war goddess. Its primary weapon]].
** The [[spoiler:Nemain]]'s primary weapon is the Gae Bolg, a javelin that releases "lonely permet" into the victims mobile suit. The lonely permet seeks out other permet clusters, destroying the mobile suit's internal systems in the process and bursting out of joins looking like thorns. In the mythology, the Gae Bolg is the spear of Cú Chulainn which could cause thorny vines to grow through the victim's veins, killing them instantly.
** Nika has a silver arm (covered in permet growths). An arm made of silver is a trait of Nuada Airgetlám, the first king of the gods the Irish pantheon. Like Nuada, Nika fights a being called Balor, though unlike Nuada, she survives the battle. She does have the nickname Silverhand among the Dawn of Fold, which is what ''Airgetlám'' means.
** The Morrigan is meant to represent a RevenantZombie or Frankenstein's Monster, to go with the Aerial (vengeful spirit) and Calibarn (savage beast).
* NamedWeapons: While all Gundam subsystems tend to have names, the Morrigan's sword in particular is named Fragarach according to WordOfGod.
* TheNeedsOfTheMany: When the CAUL are planning on launching an attack on greenhouses on Earth, Guel objects since people (Earthians) will die. Shaddiq, who is Earthian himself, argues that it's better that a few die rather than the millions that would die if the SAL got their way.
* NeverMyFault:
** Sabina accuses Norea of having deserted from the Dawn of Fold, conveniently ignoring the part where Sabina and Nika destroyed her gundam and stole the only other available mobile suit before leaving her in the dust. Norea correctly deduces that she's projecting her own guilt for doing nothing to help Nika earlier onto her.
** Shaddiq seems chronically incapable of admitting that he fucked up, always acting like everything was part of the plan and he's on top of things even when they ''clearly'' aren't.
* TheNothingAfterDeath: Assuming [[spoiler:Ireesha's vision was true, the Ad Stella afterlife consists of floating in a frozen ocean, packed like sardines, with no understanding of time and unable to do anything but see. Forever]].
* NotSoStoic: Sabina generally keeps a very stoic face through any situation, including ColdBloodedTorture. Once she's in private, however, she lets herself go and throws up. Also, she enjoys playing rock music.
* NouveauRiche: The Jeturks have been rich for four generations (since Guel's great-grandfather), which is nothing compared to the Grassleys or the Rembrans.
* NumberTwo:
** Nika is the Captain, and Sabina is her Lieutenant. [[spoiler:Later, Nika becomes General and Sabina becomes Captain]].
** Guel is Miorine's vice-president, while Suletta is her foremost fighter.
** Henao Jazz has taken over as Shaddiq's second in command after Sabina defected. Miorine notes that she takes after Sabina to an almost disturbing degree, emulating her to the point of losing herself in the role.
** Felsi is commander Chuchu's lieutenant.
* OccupiersOutOfOurCountry: The Dawn of Fold's goal is to make Earth independent of the CAUL. [[spoiler:They succeed over the course of the second book, liberating Earth and a number of near-Earth colonies, and establishing the Near Earth Union as a new provisional government]].
* OddFriendship:
** Once they actually started spending time together as a result of the former dating Felsi, Chuchu and her former bully Petra found themselves becoming close friends.
** Felsi, the hot-blooded daughter of wealthy spacians, gets along swimmingly with [[spoiler:Sabina, an IceQueen Earthian freedom fighter, once the former defects to Dawn of Fold]].
* OfficialCouple: Suletta and Miorine are married, of course, going by each others' last names. Sabina Fardin-Nanaura and Nika Nanaura-Fardin have also tied the knot, and Felsi and Chuchu are together.
* OldGuardVersusNewBlood:
** The battle in chapter 14 pits Norea, a first-generation enhanced human piloting the two or more years old Pharact, against three recently modified transhumans piloting top-of-the-line Beguirs.
** In chapter 18, it's the [[spoiler:Schwarzette, the most advanced mobile suit Jeturk could come up with using technology borrowed from Shin-Sei, against Aerial, a 20-year-old mobile suit piloted by a ghost. It's only because Suletta is one of the world's best pilots that she can even keep up]].
* OminousWalk: The Morrigan takes its time approaching a downed Demi-Barding in chapter 9.
* OmniscientCouncilOfVagueness: Whoever is in charge of the Space Assembly League is never seen, though they appear to be a senate of some sort.
* TheOneThatGotAway: Renee Costa and Lilique had a brief relationship, but it ended poorly, and Renee still has feelings for her.
* OnlyFriend: Shaddiq remarks that Guel is probably the only person who's happy he's not hurt. Guel admits that it's true, though he brought it on himself.
* OocIsSeriousBusiness: Suletta is usually a sweet and forgiving ingénue. So when she openly says that she dislikes Shaddiq, and later has to keep her temper in check when addressing him, it's obvious that he's gone over the line.
* OpenMouthInsertFoot: Norea's first words to Nika are "You broke your arm again?" The mental Elan standing in for her conscience immediately admonishes her for it.
* OperationBlank: Operation: Asura Drop is an attempt by CAUL to retake some Earthian hydroponics facilities from Dawn of Fold in order to prevent more widespread destruction from the SAL using their superweapon. [[spoiler:It fails miserably, accomplishing none of its goals, resulting in the deaths of a beloved enemy leader and a lot of civilians, and the defection of a skilled field commander to the enemy]].
* ParentalFavouritism: Like in the show, it's not hard to see which of her two daughters is Prospera's favourite. Suletta is perfectly aware of it and tries to not let it bother her, [[spoiler:but it boils over when she's fighting Ericht and adds to her many grievances]].
* ParentsAsPeople: Naji Geor-Hija is arguably the best father in the fic, but he is shown to have many ''many'' flaws in his parenting. In particular, as the leader of a freedom fighter organization, he had to allowchild soldiers, either directly (Sophie and Norea), or simply as a consequence of their life (Nika).
* PointOfDivergence: The most notable divergence between the fic and canon is that Nika and Sabina knew each other from childhood and had long pined for each other. The more direct point of divergence from canon events is that they stole the Lfrith Ur to escape Asicassia during "The End of Hope", and destroyed the Lfrith Thorn in the process, preventing Norea's rampage.
* Polyamory:
** [[spoiler:In ''Their Fond Pageant'', Nika and Sabina's relationship with the Morrigan, aka. Sophie Pulone, is distinctly romantic, as they are both okay with her being part of their sexlife and the narration describes Nika sleeping with Sabina in the Morrigan's cockpit as being embraced by her lover''s''. The fic is even tagged "Sophie/Nika/Norea" and "Polyamory", with Jerkus describing Nika and Sabina as Sophie's wives]].
** The remaining Grassley valkyries have a ''very'' close relationship. Though the messed up {{Transhuman}} nature of their relationship makes it impossible to describe properly.
* PoorCommunicationKills: Lilique and Renee broke up because Lilique said she couldn't stand seeing Renee be mean to her favourite person. Renee reacted to this with jealousy, whereas Lilique had actually meant to imply that ''Renee'' was her favourite person, and she wanted her to stop her self-deprication.
* PosthumousCharacter: Delling Rembran died from the injuries he sustained at Plant Quetta, and has been dead for a while by the time the fic kicks off. Likewise, Kenanji Avery and Maisie May died at the PointOfDivergence.
* PretentiousLatinMotto: The Dawn of Fold use "Nemo me impune lacessit", None may strike me with impunity. Except [[spoiler:it's not their motto, but a codephrase used by Elan and Norea. It's actually the motto of the House of Montressor from ''Literature/TheCaskOfAmontillado'', one of Norea's favourite novels]].
* PurpleIsPowerful: [[spoiler:The Nemain has gotten a new purple-and-white colour scheme to contrast the Calibarn's WhiteAndRedAndEerieAllOver]].
* QueerEstablishingMoment: In a quiet moment with Norea, Elan tells her that he had a name before becoming Elan but considers it a "dead name" and doesn't want to use it, implicitly coming out as trans.
* RageBreakingPoint:
** Ericht [[spoiler:attacking and destroying the Peil HQ with everyone inside causes Suletta to finally snap and attack her with the intent of taking her out for good, all of her previous grievances like Prospera's ParentalFavouritism and Ericht's tendency to treat everything like a game adding to her anger. While Ericht tricks and defeats her, TheReveal of Elan's true nature causes her to snap again and violently beat up Shaddiq for keeping it secret]].
** When Miorine returns to Asticassia to find [[spoiler:the Valkyries trying to kill Elan and Norea, she furiously threatens to have them executed if they don't stand down. While the Valkyries would consider this an empty threat from Shaddiq, they know better than to ignore a threat like that from Miorine]].
* RagsToRiches: Guel's great-grandfather, the founder of Jeturk Heavy Machinery, started out as a miner who grew sick of his friends dying to unsafe equipment. He used stolen and salvaged junk to make his own mobile suit, and sold the patent for a pretty penny, using the money to buy the mine he worked in and the income from that to establish his company.
* RaisedInALab: Sophie and Norea spent their formative years in an Ochs Earth lab being made into enhanced humans. Norea's memories of it does not paint a pretty picture.
* RealMenCook: Vim was of the opinion that a man should know his way around a kitchen as well as he does the bedroom, passing those values on to Guel.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Suletta gets one from [[spoiler:Ericht in chapter 22, with Ericht calling her out for treating the war like a petty squabble and never comitting to anything or accepting kwhat needs to be done. Suletta is too furious to answer]].
* RedBaron:
** Suletta is known by the callsign Barghest.
** Ericht is known as the Ghost Princess of Earth.
** Nika has gained the nicknames "Architect", "Silverhand", and "Bluebird of Victory" for her ability to plan and manage the entirety of Dawn of Fold, and her permet-encrusted hand.
** Prospera is known as The Witch of Quiet Zero, Fleetbreaker, She of the Black Coffin, etc.
* RedRightHand: Nika's entire arm is covered in permet growths that react when she uses the Morrigan's permet scores. The exact reason is unclear, but it first happened when it got hurt during the escape from Asticassia, and the numbness and pain decreases when in contact with the Morrigan.
* RegionalRedecoration: It's mentioned that California no longer exists. The region is now called Arizona Bay.
* TheReliableOne: Miorine notes that she can always trust Secelia to do what's best for Burion, and Rouji to follow Secelia's lead, making them the most trustworthy of her inner circle aside from Suletta.
* ReligiousAndMythologicalThemeNaming: Most of the Mobile Suits introduced in the fic are named after creatures and people from Celtic mythology and folklore.
** The Morrigan is a Celtic god of war and fate.
** Demi-Balor is named for Balor, the one-eyed king of the Formorians in Irish mythology.
** The Beguir-Sidhe is named after the Celtic term for faeries, the Beguir-Dullahan after the original headless horseman, and the Beguir-Dearg Du was supposed to be after a creature reminiscent of a vampire, but due to CriticalResearchError does not actually exist.
* TheRemnant: Cathedra is not entirely defunct as an organization quite let, being still dedicated to their mission of eradicating gundams under the command of Sarius Zenelli, but they have been reduced to little more than well-funded space pirates.
* TheReveal: While it was previously hinted at, chapter 11 makes it clear beyond doubt that the Morrigan [[spoiler:contains the mind of Sophie Pulone]].
* RevenantZombie: Not literally, but when Belmeria sees the Gundam Morrigan she thinks that it resembles an undead revenant. Considering that it was built from the wreckage of Sophie Pulone's Lfrith Ur, she's half right.
* RevengeIsSweet: Discussed. Prospera is of the opinion that whoever said that revenge is meaningless was a liar, and that revenge is both cathartic and stops further harm. That said, she also warns that revenge only soothes the pain of loss as much as any other distraction, and one should always put their survival loved ones first.
* {{Revenge}}: Norea is positively ecstatic at the chance to hunt down the Morrigan, since it was built from the wreck of her dead best friend's gundam. [[spoiler:Subverted when she actually gets the chance, as she decides to put her ideals before her revenge, and that Sophie would be happy with the Morrigan anyway]].
* TheRevolutionWillNotBeCivilized: The Dawn of Fold are ultimately heroic and their enemies are worse, but they do not shy away from the darker sides of revolution, including executing enemy leaders with CruelAndUnusualDeath, ColdBloodedTorture, and other violence.
* RhetoricalQuestionBackfire: Shaddiq sarcastically asks if Guel isn't having his servants cook for him. Guel, aware that it was meant as an insult, doesn't let Shaddiq get to him and instead responds sincerely that he enjoys cooking.
* RichKidTurnedSocialActivist: Felsi, after she started dating Chuchu, dedicated herself to understanding the oppression of Earth and social situation Chuchu grew up in. Thanks to some lessons and reading reccomendations from one of Chuchu's more politically inclined fathers, she's now firecely anti-capitalist and pro-Earth.
* RuleOfSymbolism:
** Chapter 19 have the Valkyries stand in a circle around a man they're about to kill while in an overgrown grove with wicker dolls hanging around them, evocative of witch covens performing human sacrifice.
** Cathedra mobile suits are modified to be heavily armoured at the front but not the back, meaning that retreat is inadviseable. Chuchu thinks it fits their image as fanatic crusaders.
--"With your shield or on it, and all that."
* SecondLove: Elan is this to Norea, the only person she loves aside from the late Sophie. Though she insists on being tsundere about it.
* SeinfeldianConversation: During the war meeting in chapter 20, Elan and Norea have a short discussion about wether the enemy flagship resembles a cow or horse more.
* SecretHandshake: [[spoiler:Felsi and Sabina develop one once the former defects to Dawn of Fold. They perform it with their mobile suits, and drag their reluctant partners into it]].
* SesquipedalianLoquaciousness: Felsi develops a tendency to launch into lengthy complicated rants about Earthian oppression thanks to some literature recommendations from one of Chuchu's dad.
--'''Felsi:''' And what constitutes ‘Earthian’ is an ever-shifting subject position based not on geography but on the-”
* ShadowArchetype: The Valkyries are this to Norea, representing who she could have been if she let anger and vengeance consume her to the point of not caring what lives she took as long as she could make someone pay, their [[spoiler:attack on Quinharbour]] meant to echo Norea's rampage at Asticassia in the canon events of the show.
* SharedDream: Henao somehow experiences one of Ireesha's dreams, a vivid flashback to a conversation only she and Maisie were present for.
* SharedUniverse: Jerkus' earlier fic, ''Put Up Your Dukes'', about Felsi and Chuchu's relationship is canon to this fic up until the PointOfDivergence. Chapter 25 directly references several events from that fic.
* ShipOfTheseus: Norea notes that the Lfrith-Ur has been so thoroughly rebuilt and modified into the Morrigan that it can hardly be called the same mobile suit, directly referencing the Ship of Theseus.
* ShoutOut:
** A few Earthians in chapter 8 speak Belter Creole, from ''Literature/TheExpanse''.
** WordOfGod is that the scene of the Morrigan clinging to the side of a skyscraper was inspired by the scene in ''Literature/{{Dracula}}'' where the Count climbs down a sheer castle wall "In lizard-like fashion".
** Guel has an apron with a cartoon chicken and the text "Behold, a man!", a reference to an anecdote about Diogenes the Cynic.
** This line from chapter 19:
---[[Film/ThePhantomMenace A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one.]]
** Norea is fond of Creator/EdgarAllanPoe, and even uses a quote from one of his short stories as her codephrase with Elan.
** Elan at one point considered using Snorri as an alias, presumably in reference to the Icelandic poet and scribe Snorri Sturlasón.
** The people in the stream chat in chapter 21, with the exception of Go-Between-Queen nad Birdwatcher2, are characters from previous ''Gundam'' anime.
** In chapter 29, Elan #4 is trying to learn [[Music/TheEagles "Hotel California"]] on the guitar.
** Also in chapter 29, Elan's chase leads to the destruction of a [[WesternAnimation/AvatarTheLastAirbender cabbage cart, much to the owner's dismay]].
** Norea is a fan of Music/{{ABBA}}, and mentions that their music was adapted into [[Film/MammaMia one of the most enduring stage musicals]].
* ShownTheirWork: The fic includes a lot of allusions to Irish and Celtic mythology, as well as historical events ranging from the infamous (the French Reign of Terror) to the rather obscure (the motto used by the Scotish House of Stewart dynasty).
* ShrinkingViolet: Sophie, of all people, used to be this as a kid, hiding behind Norea when she was scared.
* SigilSpam: The Aeriali Cult stamps Ericht's handprint on all of their mobile suits.
* SignificantHaircut: Elan and Norea have both styled their hair identically to the original Elan Ceres, so that the Peil Grade AI won't be able to tell them apart.
* SkewedPriorities: After reuniting with Norea ''in the middle of a battle'', Naji's first reaction is to ask if she has eaten well.
* TheSociopath: Maisie May was officially diagnosed with high-functioning sociopathy as part of the Grassley orphanage evaluation program. In a flashback to her and Ireesha's interractions, she needs Ireesha to point it out when she does something hurtful, at which point she'll apologize not because she feels remorse but to indicate that she won't do it again.
* SophisticatedAsHell: Sabina, as part of being TheStoic, tends to use very precise and proper manner. She does occasionally slip up and swears, much to Nika's delight.
* SoleSurvivor: PlayedForLaughs: When Ericht [[spoiler:destoys the Peil facility, one of the people in her chat (going by the handle Replyguyver) was really excited about being killed, only for Ericht to avoid the part of the facility he was in. He types a disappointed "damnit" in the chat afterward]].
* SparedByAdaptation: Norea du Noc is still alive in this continuity, the PointOfDivergence being just before the events that killed her in canon. Likewise, anyone killed or injured during her rampage in ''End of Hope'' (like Petra Itta) are presumably fine.
* SpeakInUnison: While using the [[spoiler:TAT, the Valkyries speak not in unison, but through each others' bodies. Generally this takes the form of for instance Henao asking a question through Renee's mouth, and Renee answering through Henao's]].
* StealthExpert: The Beguir-Sidhe can render itself invisible to even advanced sensors like the Pharact's, which is made even better when it operates under water where visibility is low.
* StealthHiBye: PlayedForLaughs. Chuchu's giant hair pompoms give her a massive blindspot behind her, meaning that Felsi can sneak up on her with impunity. She generally uses it for harmless pranks, but in one case shows up next to her girlfriend without Chuchu realizing she was there.
* TheStoic:
** Sabina was raised by Grassley to dissociate and be as cold and emotionless as possible. She is making a conscious attempt at unlearning that to be with Nika.
** Henao Jazz, like in the show, emotes very little and keeps her emotions close to her chest. Unlike in the show, this is noted to be an unspecified form of neurodivergence on her part, possibly dysthymia.
* StopWorshippingMe: Some people on Earth has started worshipping Ericht as a deity, which she doesn't really like because she doesn't want to lose her humanity, but answers their prayers when she can.
* SuperPersistentMissile: The Dullahan's missiles can be directed by its Lantern Drones, allowing them to trace targets by impossible accuracy.
* SuperSmoke: Unlike most mobile suits, that use a permet cooling system, the Morrigan uses water for cooling, allowing it to operate at full efficiency within Quiet Zero's sphere of influence. Whenever it vents, it creates a thick blanket of superhot steam. [[spoiler:Rebuild upgrades it to a black fog infused with permet functioning as a cloak]].
* SupersticiousSailors: Gundam Pilots actually. Sabina, despite her serious and stoic demeanor, is actually quite superstitious, using rituals to ward off bad luck and fully believing that Morrigan is sapient. [[spoiler:Not that she's wrong on the second count]].
* SurvivalMantra: Guel has used "One foot, then the other. I can do this." ever since Earth.
* {{Synchronization}}: A bit of a motif.
** When they use the Morrigan's GUND format together, Nika and Sabina are so intermingled that they can barely tell where one ends and the other begins, and feel each others' pain and sensations. This seems to have been strongest the first time in the Lfrith-Ur, and lessened with time and as they perfected the Morrigan's systems.
** Henao somehow experiences her fellow valkyries' dreams, and the feelings associated with those dreams. We later learn that [[spoiler:this is a new Grassley system called Triune Associative Technology (or as Henao calls it, Thou Art That) that enables trios of pilots to effectively become a hive mind, tested out on Henao, Ireesha, and Renee]].
** [[spoiler:The Morrigan is fully sapient, and can feel Nika's sensations through her permet-encrusted arm, especially when they're in physical contact. Most notable, that time Nika and Sabina decided to have sex in her cockpit]].
* TheSyndicate: Chuchu's Papa Nanami works for the Hannya crime syndicate, a sort of mafia and arms dealers that have [[spoiler:supplied Cathedra with weapons]].
* TakeThat: The Peil Grade being unable to create original art or distinguishing between humans, along with its many other flaws, is evocative of AI art programs.
* TalkingDownTheSuicidal: Elan managed to talk Norea down from killing herself during their first few days in Peil custody by telling her that he needed her if he was to kill them all.
* TeensLoveShopping: Chuchu, of all people, found herself greatly enjoying trying on clothes that Petra bought her, and has since greatly expanded her warderobe.
* ThirdEye: [[spoiler:The Nemain's Catha's eye is mounted between the former Calibarn's crown, and, at permet 4, can be used to "see" the flow of permet links in another mobile suit, which works like a kind of CombatClarivoyance]].
* TimeSkip: There is one of a few months between book 1 and 2, giving enough time for Dawn of Fold to rebuild and the war to escalate.
* TortureTechnician: Sabina was trained in torture as part of becoming a Valkyrie, and retains the skills years after. Notably, unlike many torturers, she avoids doing anything that will cause permanent harm, relying mostly on the psychological aspect - fear of pain rather than pain itself. While Grassley taught her to dissociate while torturing someone to be more efficient, she elects not to, staying stoic in public but letting it affect her when in private.
* TranquilFury: When Miorine ''doesn't'' shout in anger, that's when you know she's ''really'' angry.
* {{Troll}}:
** In the first ''Their Fond Pageant'' story, [[spoiler:Sophie freezes Nika's arm just as she finishes masturbating, resulting in Nika going around with her hand stuck in a rather obvious and embarassing position]].
** In a flashback, Elan #4 is trying to learn "Hotel California" on the guitar, much to #5's annoyance. He proceeds to sneak lyrics of the song into the conversation as much as he can.
* TrueCompanions: The Valkyries certainly have a very close relationship, seeing each other as their only family and willing to [[spoiler:give up their individuality to keep each other safe]]. Since Maisie's death and Sabina's defection, the remaining three has become borderline codependent.
** the Earth gang
* {{Tsundere}}:
** Elan and Norea are this mutually, making a game out of how sincere they can get without letting it slip that they care about each other.
** Norea would have you know that she does not see Naji as her father figure, thank you very much, even if she has a hard time not smiling when he expresses concern and care for her and calls him annoying in the same breath as she calls dads annoying.
* TwoAliasesOneCharacter: [[spoiler:Gundam Morrigan, aka. Sophie Pulone]].
* {{Ubermensch}}: Delling fashioned himself a "Nietzschian Overman beyond the trivialities of human emotion" before his death.
* UndyingLoyalty: Sabina trusts Nika fully and entirely, to the point where she tells her that she would line up and shoot defenseless hostages if she asked her to. This is phrased less as an oath of dedication and more as a warning to not misuse that trust.
* VagueAge: Norea doesn't know her and Sophie's exact ages, but the number they use is close enough.
* VampiricDraining: The Beguir-Dearg Du can drain its enemies of permet through the permet blades attached to its arm, boosting itself and its pilot's sisters. To drive the point home, Ireesha accidentally stabs the pilot so the blade is bloody when it comes out. [[spoiler:Nika later salvages it for use in the Morrigan, giving it the same ability]].
--'''Norea:''' Get your own, asshole!
* VirtualYouTuber: [[spoiler:On Suletta's suggestion, Ericht has taken up streaming as a hobby, using a cartoon bunny as her vtuber avatar. She uses that same streaming platform to livestream her destruction of the Peil facility to the world]].
* VirtualGhost:
** [[spoiler:Sophie still "lives" as the personality in the Morrigan, though she can't communicate with anyone.]]
** [[spoiler:Chapter 31 strongly implies that Elan #4 still "lives" in the Pharact]].
* WackyMarriageProposal: Chapter 24 shows in a flashback that, while Suletta already proposed during the events of the show, Miorine said yes shortly after the Benerit HQ attack at Yushura's amusement park thanks to some prompting from the latter.
* WeUsedToBeFriends: Chuchu and Nika were at least close to friends at one point. Then the whole thing with the Morrigan happened, and there's little good blood between them anymore. When they meet again, their fight consits mostly of Chuchu calling Nika a terrorist and liar, while Nika calls Chuchu an oppressor and class traitor, and they genuinely want to kill each other.
* WhamLine: From chapter 31; [[Music/TheEagles "On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair..."]]. Since an earlier flashback showed that Elan #4 was learning "Hotel California", this seemingly confirms [[spoiler:that he exists in the Pharact in the same way as Ericht and Sophie]].
* WholeFlashbackEpisode:
** Chapter 5 is entirely a flashback to Nika and Sabina's escape from Asticassia, the PointOfDivergence for the fic.
** Chapter 11 recounts the events after chapter 5, as they made their way to Earth, with the slight twist that it's all told from Lfrith-Ur/The Morrigan/[[spoilerSophie Pulone]]'s perspective.
* WhyCouldntYouBeDifferent: Henao, who has an unspecified neurodivergence, was told all her life that she should just be normal, to the point that the word "normal" is a TraumaButton for her, especially when said by someone she cares about like Renee.
* WistfulAmnesia: [[spoiler:The Morrigan remembers being ''something'' before, and has vague recollections about what she likes and what's important to her, but doesn't remember that she was Sophie Pulone. She seems to remember when she sees Norea, though immediately after when she meets Ericht she admits that she's not sure who she is]].
* WreckedWeapon: The Morrigan's sword, Fragarach, is broken [[spoiler:by Felsi in the battle with the Demi-Balor. The Morrigan Rebuild keeps it like that, but gives it a permet edge that enhances its abilities]].
* WrenchWench: Nika is of course one of the best mechanics in the world, able to rebuild and retrofit the Lfrith Ur using nothing but scraps. Felsi has also picked up mechanics to help her girlfriend modify her mobile suits to work better, and while she's not as good as Nika she's a pretty good mechanic herself.
* YouAreinCommandNow: [[spoiler:Nika becomes the leader of the Dawn of Fold after Naji is killed in battle]].
