Makoto started off much like she did in the original game, but took an interest much earlier in trying to stop Kamoshida's abuse of the students only to get blackballed by Kobayakawa. That combined with Eiko suffering similar abuse at Kamoshida's hands and then getting put into a coma after an accident was what caused Makoto to finally snap.

* UsedToBeASweetKid: Akechi and Shiho say that Makoto used to be more compassionate. Chapters 11, 14, and 15 detail how she went from the kind individual she was in canon to the KnightTemplar she is now.

He then explains that a threat only works if you go through with it, and a pistol meant killing Mishima and providing no information. Akira changes tactics and holds a knife to one of Mishima's ears, which Arsene approves of as a maimed victim can still talk.
