The story starts out some while after Shinji and Asuka's SacredFirstKiss. However it introduces two new Angels after Ireul. The sequel ignores –possibly--Leliel, Bardiel and Zeruel entirely and skips straight to Arael. Touji never becomes the Fourth Children and Unit-03 never shows up.

* HurtingHero: In case that losing their mothers, being ditched by their fathers before being four and fighting giant otherworldly monsters was not traumatic enough, Asuka has sex with Shinji and gets pregnant. Now they have to patch their relationship up--even if they are barely capable to have a civil conversation--and learn to be parents--even if they are mind-broken teenagers. And even if they get together Asuka still may die when she delivers Teri because [[spoiler:Gendo is using her to create a new life-form, and giving birth that life-form may kill Asuka.]]

* ActionDad: Shinji to his daughter Teri. He can doubt himself, think he's unworthy or unfit to be her father... but he would protect her with his life, and he fought his own father when Gendo threatened her.

* TheHero: Shinji, who is determined to try to be a better person and fight to protect the woman he loves and their baby.

* TheyDo: Asuka and Shinji got married two years and one half after Teri’s birth and five years before the epilogue.

''The Child Of Love'' became incredibly popular and it spawned a sequel, several spin-offs and imitators. Even Rei -who had been absolutely and unconditionally faithful to him- said she'd rather obey Misato, because she was "more human".

* MandatoryMotherhood: When Shinji gets Asuka pregnant they have the baby even though they’re socially inept teenagers -and Asuka never wanted to become a mother- because they don’t want their child to go through the same pain that they did.

** [[spoiler:Kaji tried –and almost managed- to destroy SEELE to talk Gendo into giving up his plans]] and so protecting his former ward Asuka and her daughter.

* PeopleJars: In the sequel Rei spends a while floating inside a cylindrical transparent tube, wondering whether she should terminate the remaining Yui clones -and finally becoming her own person- or leave them alone in case her current body gets destroyed in battle. Later the remaining clones appear, floating in their liquid-filled tank.

** In chapter 2 Shinji gets confused because Asuka called him “Shinji-kun” (in the proper series Asuka only called him “Shinji” twice: when she met him for first time and –quite interestingly- before their kiss).
