Andrea'' (a Marine), who manage together to cause enough trouble to shake the world, much to the dismay of other Marines such as Sengoku or Kuzan, and the complete terror of World Government and pirates alike.

* CodeOfHonour: The official Code of Justice and Conduct of the Navy (which is more often than not ignored by the World Government) is this, as Danarans consider ''love, duty, honour and justice'' as interrelated if not the same.
** In consequence, the worst punishment the Navy knows is the punishment given to a common criminal, a [[PublicExecution semi-public Death by Hanging]] (as opposed to a firing squad or allowing suicide). Given how big Dai Senmei and their followers are on an honourable life (and death), this is the ultimate humiliation.

** The TrademarkFavouriteFood of the Navy are pot stews, particularly ''East Indian/Vietnamese Style Curry Stew'', for which the Navy chefs are famous; there exists a regular competition amongst the cooks for the best recipe, and the officers at Marineford fight for the best seats at the weekly curry. But the extremes Garp, Sakazuki and Shirotatsu's [[TeamChef Chef de Cuisine Chef Stroganoff]] go to surrounding the dish are ridiculous even by Navy standards.

Born exceedingly fragile in health and overall physique, her family ties and an incident involving a block of Seastone put her on the radar of Admiral Akainu, who, in true Jerkass fashion blackmails her into becoming an agent for the Navy. After a series of misadventures where she tries to stay neutral in mentality, she eventually winds up as a Vice-Admiral and the student of the ultimate born-and-bred female Marine, Admiral Shiroyoru, much to her fright.

* AbnormalAmmo: Any distance attack she employs often uses a devil fruit power or on the rare occasion she has sported a gun before with Seastone Bullets.
** This had been passed from Admiral Akainu to her Grandfather as a show of trust, which says quite a bit as at the time, she was less than enthused about working with Akainu

** Not made any better by the fact one of her subordinates had pretended to be a bartender during his original mission and is apparently adept enough at the skill that the Whitebeard Pirates approve
** Played with during Doflamingo’s Mess Arc when Andrea’s workaholic habits start to literally destroy her body, they use sake to force her to sleep
** A rather barbaric alcoholic however as played with in Chapter 14 of Andrea’s Awakening, as she (in a very fancy restaurant) turns down the waiter’s suggestion for wine for “just Sake” (not even a particular brand/brew either, just sake). Kuzan blames Sakazuki due to him being a sake hound
* AllJustADream: Sabo’s way of warning the sister who did not know he was alive. Unfortunately, it later leads to a great amount of resentment on her end.
** In Chapter 7 of Awakening, Andrea’s dream shows her try to enforce her will over her scar to attempt to put it in a logia mode. Unfortunately, her body isn’t meant to shift into a logia form and it starts to kill her from the palm, up her arm, to the rest of her body. She awakens right before she dies and is relieved that she’s alive.
*** Funnily enough, this dream was due to an spell of Sabo’s which causes an inversion of this trope for him as he starts to experience some of the effects (tremors up his arms which split his skin)
* AsleepForDays: Due to her narcolepsy and body’s annoying tendency to just stay asleep when it deems she still needs rest, she sometimes can be out of commission for some time.
** Played straight at the end – she falls into a coma
* TheAtoner: Her attempts to rebuild Dressrosa’s destroyed buildings at the cost of her vitality and health which would lead to her falling into a coma from self neglect
** Andy submitting to Theodora’s training schedule without protest also counts. Even more after she learns that Theo is basically the queen of Danara Marina, and thus her sovereign.
* AwesomeButImpractical: Despite imitating devil fruit powers, the limited range of effect and drain on Andrea’s stamina make her right scar limited in a fight against a superior opponent or one with much greater stamina
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: Gets promoted to Vice Admiral following the aftermath to Marineford. Prior to that, uses her status as an underling to basically enlist most of the CP 9 as her subordinates.
* BadassCrew: Andrea literally names her subordinates, the Crew, and they are made of the survivors of CP 9
* BadassGrandpa: Monkey D. Garp, despite not technically being blood related to Andrea, considers her family. Although being significantly more frail than her brothers, he does manage to impart some basic fighting techniques that put her above some rookies that Admiral Aokiji (a vice admiral at the time) was training when she was but a child.
* BadassInANiceSuit: She thoroughly enjoys wearing suits and blazers when on official business.
** Averted after Chapter 12 of Awakening when Andrea has the revelation that she cannot wear her suits anymore during active duty as it is not the uniform for an STOC officer, not to mention a candidate for the same; however, the STOC uniform may also count, especially with the collar not all zipped up.
* BadassLongCoat: Wears the stock accessory of a Marine officer. However, due to lack of Applicable Phlebotinum (sense of justice), it will not stick to her in a battle unless she actually wears it or uses the chain, at least until after the Time Skip.
* BadassPrincess: Technically. She’s the daughter of Gol D. Roger, the fucking Pirate King, and she can cause a lot of damage.
* BattleCouple: With Admiral Akainu/Vice Admiral Akarô. After the time skip, even more so.
* BeamSpam: One of the first ways Andrea taps into her unusual power on her right hand or more particularly the scar there. Teaching courtesy of Admiral Kizaru.
* BeingGoodSucks: Lately has come to see just how difficult the justice of the Marines is.
** Made in many ways worse by the fact she’s dating the least hesitating of the admirals.
** Theo’s Reason You Suck Speeches don’t help.
* BelligerentSexualTension: Very obvious early in after Akainu pulls the stick out of his ass and lets Andrea see how bad pirates can really make the world and actually tries to be nice to receive positive results
* BerserkButton: Insulting or threatening her family and friends. Blonde males to some extent of which only Sabo and Marco appear to be the exception. Intentionally belittling her strength without the means to back it up.
** Plagiarism and taking credit for others’ work
** Seeing Dragon under any circumstance
** After Chapter 12 of Awakening, being belittled for her gender or for looking weak
* BewareOfTheNiceOnes: Despite being relatively easygoing and even a relaxed person, when in the presence of particularly odious or annoying pirates, Andrea becomes rather murderous and relentless. Especially if there is no one around to worry about getting hurt, she does not have to worry about holding back but she tames this somewhat around her family.
** Near the end of the Dressrosa Arc, Andrea tries to extend a courtesy and be polite as well as sympathetic to a woman only to have it thrown in her face, the Revolutionaries brought up as well as the moral choice of to kill her or not. The fact she had skived off enough of her duties and the risk presented left her with no choice as she chokes the woman to death within her own house
* BigEater: Practically obligatory if you were raised among Andrea’s family. She does utilize basic table manners and silverware however (kind of like Garp in company).
** Eating a lot is necessary to keep her body functioning with her weakened life force
** Also she cannot control when her narcoleptic tendencies strike so she has a ‘reserve’
*** Lampshaded by Kizaru when he’s escorting her back to Marineford that her failure to eat her normal big meals is causing a lot more damage. Her stomach then protests wildly as she has been asleep for several days
** Averted near the end of Perils, starting in the Doflamingo’s Mess Arc. She starts eating less out of guilt (does not want to deprive the local populous of food) then when Kizaru forces her to start eating, she only eats enough for a normal human
** Lampshaded by Theodora in Chapter 4 about how much life energy she requires (to be healed) and how much of a glutton she is
** Lampshaded by Natsuko in Chapter 5 of Awakening with how, even when unconscious/comatose, she consumes a great deal as her food bag (which has as much calories as chankonabe, the sumo stew) has become depleted quickly

* BondBreaker: Joining the marines (at least for Ace more so than Luffy) and failing at Dressrosa

** Played straight in Chapter 12 where Andrea actually calls him out on his brooding (this time, about Kuzan’s speech). Afterwards, she restrains herself from confronting a recruit who starts to belittle her
* ButtMonkey[=/=][[ExtremeDoormat Admiral's Doormat]]: After the time skip, she and Sakazuki are this in the STOC due to being on the black list of atonement.
** Andrea has moments where she goes through an unspoken order then realizes she had basically offered to be the admiral’s doormat and thus cannot complain.
* CallingYourAttacks: Lampshaded in the Doflamingo’s Mess Arc in the beginning where Andrea mourns the fact she has no real labelled attacks and decides to come up with one after a pushy councilman mocks her building effort and orders it destroyed. It was unfortunate her first official called attack was tested on bricks but she admits to thinking how to apply it in a real battle

*** First tested on bricks but it is a combination of Andrea’s devil fruit power loosening earth and soil while imitating Isshô’s devil fruit to force the loosened rubble to fly.

*** With this, Andrea imitates the properties of Diamond Jozu’s devil fruit on her scar while strengthening the rest of her hand with Armament Haki.
*** The naming of it is rather deceptive as it is more akin to an open palm thrust rather than a punch
* CanineCompanion: During Skypiea and when training with Akainu, she demonstrates the ability to make magma puppies
* ChainOfDeals: The Dressrosa Arc illustrated this best with multiple deals going around uniting half of the Yonkô, several Shichibukai, all the admirals and a few vice admirals in a plot to take back Whitebeard’s devil fruit from Donquixote Doflamingo
** Of course, an argument between Akainu and Andrea makes it all go to hell on the realization that they are not aware of every single person actually involved
* CharacterDevelopment: Goes from the description above over extremely confused to finally sad and grimly determined Marine over the course of the entire story.
** BreakTheCutie: Getting the undiluted truth about the World Government and the Marines shoved down her throat, on her own wishes no less, certainly had that effect on her. The difference between Andy in the first story and Andrea in the second after Chapter 18 are staggering.
* ChefOfIron: Has a talent for cooking and displays a keen interest in culinary preparation. Her family adores her cooking to the point where Luffy drools actively at the thought of it.
* ColdBloodedTorture: From Andrea and Akainu to Spandam before his death.
* ConvectionSchmonvection: Akainu actively controls his magma powers around Andrea as to not burn her.
* CuddleBug: Andrea likes to hug Akainu but has hugged on occasion her family, friends, and her female subordinates to show comfort
** Played straight in a depressing way in the last chapter: she falls into a coma after hugging Sakazuki.
* CursedWithAwesome: Being able to fuck with people’s devil fruit abilities or manipulate the ones of which you know the person wielding them seems pretty damn awesome. Until you realize this came into play by touching your (not really) dead brother’s gravestone made of a substance that tries to kill you after accidentally consuming a devil fruit. Add the fact that Seastone is not meant to be in such close contact or inside a human normally without adverse effects. Also, Theo has demonstrated that with sufficient skill, it is easy to block an incoming use of the hand: the female admiral and combat master blocks it with two fingers of her right hand. Finally, Andy’s scar cannot imitate what she cannot truly imagine, meaning that she cannot imitate devil fruits surpassing human imagination, most notably the four Elemental Cardinals.
* DangerouslyShortSkirt: Played with in the start of Dressrosa Arc where Andrea does pretend to be on vacation and this involves abandoning her normal attire.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Impossible not to have considering she was the child of Gol D. Roger. Being unofficially the adopted granddaughter of Monkey D. Garp did not completely protect her from her childhood trauma at the hands of Morgan while at Marineford itself. After the incident, it is dubbed no longer safe for her to visit any longer but the scars of that event still carry over to her distrust of blonde males.
* DarkerAndEdgier: A few early chapters showcase Andrea’s acquaintance with the more evil pirates but later in the story and flashbacks to rather unpleasant times as well as current situations with her health becoming worse and her questioning her worth, summarizing some of the later chapters turns out to be rather dark and with far more significant deaths
** As Awakening progresses, the dark facts about Andrea and Kuzan come more to light as well as the conspiracies going on in the world of One Piece
* DealWithTheDevil: Andrea’s initial bargain with Admiral Akainu felt like this.
* DeathGlare: Via Conqueror’s Haki or when she’s just really angry
** AwesomenessIsAForce: Has very high-ranking Conqueror’s Haki, surpassing her brothers in the matter, and matching her grandfather. Additionally, her training changed the root of her Haki from ambition to resolve, meaning that it is down to a contest of sheer strength to overcome her.
* DeathSeeker: Andrea is one until she actually starts caring about Admiral Akainu enough to actually take care of herself besides basic survival but this trait of hers restarts in Doflamingo’s Mess Arc
* DeusExMachina: Dressrosa Arc where Andrea’s unwillingly acquired power that she learned how to manipulate from fighting a dream version of Whitebeard helps her to negate the natural earthquakes that she accidentally triggers
* DevotedToYou: Goes both ways in Sakazuki and Andrea’s relationship but Sakazuki demonstrates this to a high degree when his stepping down from an admiral bars him from ascending to fleet admiral, humbles himself before a woman who hates marines like him, and gets himself beat to a pulp just so Andrea has a chance to become rejuvenated and survive
** Both of them use each other as a source of strength to endure after finding out about the True Justice
* DidntThinkThisThrough: Andrea’s plan she offered Whitebeard which Sengoku gave her the approval to approach him with because he knew that the pirate would turn it down. Afterwards, when it is pointed out that they, the ‘Good Pirates’ would be eliminated after the ‘Bad Pirates’ were gone, she realizes how badly planned it was.
** Andrea skips part of her breakfast during her first training session with Theodora in Chapter 10 of Awakening. Unfortunately, Theodora decides to adjust her schedule to take up that time that she skipped and makes this part of her schedule until she gets a new one where it is then lampshaded with a direct order
* DisappearedDad: Cannot be helped since Gol D. Roger is dead
** Andrea does express a fair amount of disappointment in regards to how Dragon is with Luffy
* DogWalksYou: Prior to accidentally consuming her devil fruit, when she’s in the water, her palm propels her out of the water to a dangerous extent
* DudeWheresMyRespect: Andrea is rarely respected outside personal friends or her subordinates. Even after she manages to survive a ‘spar’ with Akainu holding back, he still had used some powers that would have killed the person who instigated this in the first place (Helmeppo) but rather than get some awe, she still suffers sneers and jabs.
** Justified with Theodora’s lack of regard – Andy once blackmailed her husband into sleeping with her. Which is all the more painful as Andy owes Theo her life. Twice.
* DysfunctionJunction: Father who was a king of the pirates while adopted by a marine war hero, horrendous medical history, and in general cruel treatment by anyone (World Nobles in particular) who realized who she was prior to Marineford
* EasilyForgiven: Andrea to Lucci when she has him become her subordinate. Although not much back story was revealed, it is insinuated that Lucci was a jerk as well as downright rude to her as a child. Nonetheless, Andrea looks past that and the fact that he had tried to kill her little brother and even offers Spandam as a gift.
* ElementalPowers: Andrea’s palm gives her manipulation of logia fruits if she is able to harmonize herself with how the fruit user is like and the fruit itself
* EndOfAnAge: Andrea being presented to the world at large as the marine daughter of the king of the pirates triggers quite a backlash among many pirates. Although thankfully her brothers realize she is happy where she is, that does not stop others from reasoning she must be under control of the government. The result is that Whitebeard dies.
* EpicFail: Whitebeard pointing out to Andrea that her plan to have the ‘good’ pirates take out the ‘bad’ would leave only the ‘good’ as targets for the World Government and the Marines
* {{Epithet}}: Mountain Crusher (破山撃(hasangeki)), due to her crushing a mountain as her final test for Eight Shadows. Her and Sakazuki use their epithets endearingly when they are over Den-Den Mushi and unknowing if there are other marines around
** NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: After the time skip and her earning the moniker.
* EverythingTryingToKillYou: Andrea and Ace’s childhood.
* EverythingsWorseWithWolves: Jabra, wolf Zoan of the CP 9, attacks her out of paranoia when she goes to meet and negotiate with them. Due to her not being on her guard, she was struck in the stomach and miscarried.
** This gets used as another reason why Jabra is extremely loyal to her and often serves as her punching bag when they need to force her to vent more anger within her training sessions.

The entire incident is made worse by the fact that Kuzan was married at the time and basically only gave in because his wife had been MIA for over a year at that point [after a mission that had already taken another year], making the otherwise cheerful man rather depressed and lonely, thus it being a case of Andy taking advantage. Cue in a week later Theodora turning up again. He was a mess for weeks, especially since Theo took it fairly well, and had to be kept away from alcohol (which was troublesome as both Theo and Kuzan have a penchant for enjoying fine alcohol). It is played for laughs whenever Luffy refers to it.
*** To his credit, Kuzan did not take her to his marital bed, but a storage room, and had enough of his wits about him to be gentle. In Theo’s own words, it was his body that betrayed him and her, not his heart, letting the entire incident border on rape.

But she also suffers a blatant lack of life energy that will likely kill her before turning 55, or trying to have a child on her own without help. In addition, she used to have a lousy immune system. This is of such immense concern that her attending doctor is no-one less but the resident genius of the Navy, Doctor Vegapunk, and her medical records are well known to all her superiors.

** WeaponOfChoice: After learning the basics of Eight Shadows and furthering her skill in Haki, Andrea picks up fighting with a quarterstaff that is a replica of a legendary staff and treasure of the Danarans (and thus Navy HQ), the Whisper of the Five Blues, and called Shadow of the Great Blue (Hikai no Kage, 丕海乃影). Andy has shown to have great talent for the crowd-controlling weapon. The five-sided staff is at a quality level that would bring a sword the status of Ô Wazamono at the very least. Later, she combines, like her sensei, all three areas of skill (hand-to-hand, weapon, devil fruit) to deal devastating blows with the staff that crush houses and ships alike (not to mention skulls and other bones).
** TookALevelInBadass: The result of the training is that at the time the Straw Hats reunite, Andy is actually stronger than Luffy, much to the nightmares of the pirate captain, leaving him eat her dust.
* TraumaCongaLine: Andy has several shades of this and ends up locked in a mixture of C (Despair Event Horizon), E (Knight in Sour Armour), and G (Woobie)
** Depression, losing idealism but not morality and having a sense of normality

Anything she gets handed, she pretty much does but also gets handed a lot of weird things like going off to Amazon Lily or getting to go rescue Jewellery Bonney. Other than the normal marine stuff, she isn’t really assigned a certain area or jurisdiction
** Subverted after becoming STOC, which goes with its usual standing orders.
* WhatTheHellHero: From a duty standpoint and that of Absolute Justice, Andrea was justified in killing someone who openly supported the Revolutionaries and threatened to spread slander about the Marines/World Government but all the same, she feels torn at herself.
** At the same time, it can count as an aversion as Lucci and Kalifa wholeheartedly approve
* WhoWatchesTheWatchmen: Up until Dressrosa, Andrea basically had near free reign in how she did her duties and ‘necessary’ justice but the enormous amount of damage in Dressrosa causes Sengoku to majorly re-evaluate how the admirals supervise her. After becoming Fleet Admiral, Kuzan simply hands her over to his wife, who holds her to a sadistically strict standard in training.
** On the rare occasions that Theodora is impressed with some progress or breakthrough Andrea makes, she intensifies the training. When discovered that Andrea can read lips using Observation Haki as well as determine what people are writing, she immediately steps it up by having multiple people talk out of earshot of the vice admiral and a person (with bad handwriting) writing in close proximity while having her balance a bucket on her head and avoiding attacks as well as giving them. Then she decides to test the writing theory by doing calligraphy while multiple people are writing.
* TheWorseningCurseMark: Andrea’s reliance upon her palm scar’s problems tends to drain her life and stamina much faster than if she refrains but out of stubbornness and the fact sometimes she just needs it, she uses it. As she progressively gets stronger as the story goes in terms of power, her life force becomes weaker and more prone to longer spells of narcolepsy and exhaustion
** Made even worse after consuming Whitebeard’s devil fruit where the scar now actively tries to fight back against the fruit by killing off part of her body that has the fruit as in ALL of it. Luckily for her, Kizaru and Law manage to extract the fruit from her so the only part of her body it has succeeded in attempting to kill (through direct effect/contact) was the starburst pattern around her hand. Unfortunately became of the nature of permanence her scar caries, it does still affect the surrounding tissue while her body still gives life to herself, scar included. This locks the starburst patch of flesh in a state of life/dying/undead
*** The undead state is healed when Theo takes her powers to her, but the starburst retains as a discolouration, signifying that Andy has copied the Quake-Quake Fruit.
* YouPirateScum: At first, Andrea attempted to avoid anything that would push her into this thinking but meeting enough nasty pirates does put that mindset there.

Real name Sakazuki, Akainu (赤犬, Red Dog( used to be one of the three Admirals, the strongest fighters in the Marines. Akainu is apparently the most hard-line of the Marines, following the doctrine of Absolute Justice. During the destruction of Ohara, he destroyed an evacuee ship on the chance that one of their targets was aboard, saying that if one is to do a job it must be done properly. He has eaten the Magma-Magma Fruit (Magu-Magu no Mi), a Logia Devil Fruit based around magma, turning him into a living volcano.

However, falling in love with Gol D. Andrea, the daughter of ''Gold Roger the Pirate King'' of all people, and nearly losing her as well as a hellish mission that goes even beyond his rather low ethical standards makes him reconsider all that he has believed in, and ultimately give up his seat as admiral to someone more deserving, symbolised by his alias change to Akarô (紅狼, crimson wolf).

It's ambiguous who is the Black and who is the Grey with him.
* TheBrute: Fit the trope perfectly among the three Admirals. Even after changing, his choice of sword – a western longsword – is certainly the most brutal of swords amongst them, meant for hack-and-slash techniques (Kuzan uses a rapier, Theodora a very long katana, and Kizaru’s is a laser blade tsurugi made from his devil fruit; later, Isshô/Fujitora replaces his cane with an overlong shikomizue).
* ButtMonkey: For the Dai Senmeibukai. Even his own crew hazes him at times after the time skip.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Hinted at several times, and is not uncommon knowledge in-universe. Sakazuki is a war orphan, the survivor of a pirate raid, and was raised in a World Government orphanage, where government agents took note of the boy’s violent hatred of pirates. Instead of dousing it as usual, they fanned it until it was an integral part of what he was. Then, when he decided to join the marines, they made him what proper marines refer to as a “pet”, making sure he would never get reprimanded for any misconduct, earning him the anger of the Assembly of the Flag Officers (the collective of “true” marines that performs the higher court martials). It culminated into what the reformed Sakazuki would call “his ultimate sin”, the Ohara incident. The reason for this ugly thing is just as sinister: Two of the Five Elder Stars sought to seize control of the Navy from the Danarans, much to Theodora’s and Sengoku’s anger. The plan backfired spectacularly when Sakazuki’s love for Gol D. Andrea proved to be the ultimate spanner in the works, as it had him reconsider everything in his life, and, in the end, give up his seat as admiral to Theodora.
* DealWithTheDevil: Sakazuki seeking help from his greatest rival, Theodora, is technically this, as he has to pay for the woman’s help with his position of admiral. It gets played with as it turns out that he’s weaker than her, and thus, she had been more deserving of the title for decades.
* DidntThinkThisThrough: His tendency to do exactly this concerning his orders was a major beef with most of his peers.
* DragonInChief: Formerly. Though he was the main antagonist during the Marineford arc, he still serves under Fleet Admiral Sengoku, who didn't take much action during the arc, until the last act.
** Is this again after becoming a part of those who know the truth about the world, this time to Theodora, who even refers to him as a knight of Danara Marina.
* [[EvenEvilHasStandards Even Absolute Justice Has Standards]]: During the time-skip, he surprised everyone by not killing Jewellery Bonney on the spot when he had an easy chance, instead, he helped burying her murdered crew, and later, when they had been used as zombies, made a funeral pyre for them to spare her feelings.
** The same man that had no problem blackmailing Andy into becoming a Marine, hunted down Luffy just for being the son of the government's most dangerous enemy and killed a man who just wanted to go home to his family because he was understandably outclassed finds Z to be extreme in his methods.
** Sakazuki also hates anything that involves children being used, especially orphans, due to being one himself. Losing his unborn child to an attack does not help it.
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: If there’s one person who’s unpopular amongst Marines, it’s Sakazuki; even after the Time Skip and becoming STOC, he’s the Jerkass of the troupe, and knows it.
* GoodIsNotNice: See Jerkass. Sakazuki is the least social Marine in a few generations, probably ever, and even after changing, he’s the master of excessive force and telling you that he doesn’t like you with a fist to the face.
* HeelFaceTurn: Enforced by the end of Andy’s Perils through the missions to Dressrosa, Punk Hazard and Andy’s near-death, and realised through duelling Theodora, who loves trick questions that turn your world upside down.
* HeWhoFightsMonsters: One of Sakazuki’s major personality problems and greatest temptation after learning the truth. Having practically been raised for this by some World Government jerks who preyed on the war orphan’s hatred, Sakazuki became just as brutal and arguably more monstrous than the criminals he hunts down, even given most of the pirates seen so far have been assholes or utterly inhuman. For the Dai Senmei who still maintain a high standard of morality, honour/respect and dignity in their ways despite being raised for war, he was thus pretty much non grata.
** Due to this temptation, he knows the full quote by Nietzsche by heart, and does not take it well when [[spoiler:his son starts spouting Absolute Justice phrases in front of his liege, who in answer slaps the boy and invokes the phrase; when the boy comes then running to him to complain, he paddles him instead of standing up for him, scolding the boy for being a parrot (he’s heard this in school).]]
** IronicEcho: Type A. When Sakazuki voices his doubts about his original path in life to his ''only'' friend, Borsalino, the older man repeats, word for word, the statement that burnt Ohara to the ground to emphasise just how AxeCrazy he was.
** KnightInSourArmour: After his Heel-Face Turn. Sakazuki is still an ass and a cynic, but he’s far more willing to stick to moralistic ideals.
* HellHound: Arguably his signature move and the one that gave him the moniker 'Red Dog' was the Inugami Guren technique, making a giant dog head made of magma.
* InsaneAdmiral: Formerly. He used to go to the extremes to protect the World Government. No crime should be overlooked and anything with even the hint of pirates should be purged for the greater good. When he was a Vice-Admiral, he chose to kill over one hundred refugees to ensure none of his targets escaped from the attack. As an Admiral, he killed his own men for deserting in a battle they had no chance of doing the enemy harm. The fact they were flies against the enemy only the Admirals and above could actually harm didn't factor in. They were deserting and so had to die.
** GeneralRipper: His relentless crusade against pirates reached some rather frightening lengths.
*** And then there's him killing a captain who tried to flee the Marine HQ battle, mentally scarring Coby and Helmeppo, who were also thinking of fleeing.
*** The reason he wanted to kill Luffy so badly is solely because of who his father is. Sure, him being a Pirate is part of the reason, but he would probably still want him dead if he was civilian.
* {{Jerkass}} KnightTemplar: Big time (formerly). Still has a lot of jerk running for him (“True” Marines are notoriously vindictive). At best, he treated his allies at expendable, and was all too willing to kill any pirates or allies who are insufficiently dedicated to his brutal version of justice, while insulting their viewpoints. Subsequently, he was extremely wary of Marines who did not share his view and had the power to back it up, most notably Kuzan and Theodora, the latter not being above breaking his nose at times his mouth ran off with him.
* KiManipulation: Can use both basic forms of Haki proficiently enough to cancel the effect of other people’s haki-enhanced attacks. However, it’s useless against Theo, Kuzan and Borsalino.
* LackOfEmpathy: His No. 1 trouble. Originally, he didn’t even understand family beyond something that could be exploited for blackmail and manipulation, and snorted with disdain at the love his colleagues held for their partners. For the Haki-genius Theodora, this notion is unthinkable.
* [[MaliciousMisnaming Malicious]] [[PunnyName Punny Nickname]]: Both on his real name and his alias due to him calling himself a dog (worst insult possible to a Marine) get targeted by other marines, modifying them with the Japanese word for fool/idiot (Bakazuki and Bakainu [roughly translated in meaning/intent, Stupid and Stupidity]). After changing, he tends to call others who believe in Absolute Justice or the Five Elders when trying to cover up stuff “more stupid than the man who couldn’t tell a horse from a deer” (which is the literal meaning of baka), and uses the latter nick himself at times as reminder.
* MagmaMan: One of the reasons he's so feared.
** ConvectionSchmonvection: He's made out of and attacks with lava, but nothing takes any damage unless it actually comes into contact with something. Even then, it acts more like a solid projectile than something that should vaporize everything around it. We'll forgive this one though, since if it was actually treated realistically, no one would be able to beat him. Also, proper Logia users affect only what they want with their power.
*** Actually gets played with in the anime – Ivankov attacks Akainu with a weaponised kiss, getting his face burned. He then pulls his usual "it was just thick make-up" joke, showing an undamaged face… and then collapses from having his lungs burned by the heat and fumes. Also, he can melt his way through solid rock as if it was air.
** [[ElementalPunch Elemental]] [[GoodOldFisticuffs Fisticuffs]]: Barring the Hell Hound technique, Akainu is much less flashy in his use of his powers than other Logia users. His whole game plan is – 1. Take arm; 2. Turn it into lava; 3. Make it as large as necessary; 4. Punch until target is vaporized. Since he's living lava, it works quite well (and is probably one of the few where this is a good idea in the first place). It only becomes useless against the Elemental Cardinal of the Ice Series (Theo) that can be used to turn his magma back into cold, hard rock, and the Cardinal of his own series (Fire), who can evaporate his magma.
** ElementalRockPaperScissors: As it turns out, lava beats fire. However, Lava gets beaten by higher forms of ice like Crystal or Zero Element. It also loses to the Elemental Cardinal of the Fire Series due to superiority of solar fire, which would vaporise him.
** RocketPunch: His powers allow a particularly nasty approximation.
** ShapingYourAttacks: "Inugami Guren" attack.
** SuperpowerLottery: He's made out of lava. Not only does that mean that you can't get anywhere near him without being vaporised, but it's also superior to (as in, can outright kill) at least two other Logia.
* ManipulativeBastard: Has a way with words. It’s also the reason why many marines used to think that he’s not just a jerkass, but also an idiot: For someone who can make his enemies run into certain death with a few choice words, he sure as hell didn’t think much for himself if it came to his orders.
* MeaningfulName: His old codename, like his fellow Admirals, is derived from the Momotarô legends.
** His real name as well. A "sakazuki" is a small ceremonial sake cup like the one Luffy and Ace used when they swore an oath of brotherhood. It gets even more ironic if combined with the aforementioned Malicious Nickname he’s earned himself, which could be interpreted as “faithful idiot”.
** The "inu" in Akainu means Dog, thus automatically making him Monkey D. Luffy's enemy by default since there is a common myth that dogs and monkeys are mortal enemies. Additionally, the worst possible insult one can give a proper Marine is calling him or her a “dog of the World Government”.
*** The insult is the reason why Sakazuki takes up a new alias after his beat-down at the hands of Theodora, choosing to become “Akarô” (crimson wolf), as wolves are way more independent than dogs. The name is actually a suggestion by Theo, who knows the man’s preference of canines.
* [[MoralSociopathy Moral Sociopath]]: Formerly, as his original desire and methods are perfectly acceptable to the World Government, it's the extremes he goes to do so is what gets him in trouble and the hatred of both pirates and marines alike. Given that he’s originally a government pet, it’s of little surprise he’s never been court-martialled.
* MayDecemberRomance: Andy is half his age. The fact that he never had a steady relationship before her made him the target of Borsalino’s scheming for a long time.
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: Based on famous Japanese actor Bunta Sugawara. His real name, Sakazuki, seems to be derived from a series of films featuring Sugawara.
* OddCouple: With Borsalino. The light user is the only one willing to put up with him.
** HeterosexualLifePartners: Not completely by choice, as Sakazuki’s number of friends in the world amount to exactly one person. Borsalino also likes meddling with Sakazuki’s personal life, much to his chagrin originally.
* OneManArmy: Given that he originally didn’t have a concept of overkill or empathy, it’s of little surprise he could do this.
** AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: Even more than his fellow Admirals, if only because he's so dedicated to the job.
** CharlesAtlasSuperpower: Beside his Logia, he has shown to have enough strength to stop Whitebeard Gura-Gura bisento with his foot.
*** MusclesAreMeaningless[=/=]MusclesAreMeaningful: Sakazuki might be the most muscular of the pre-time-skip admirals, but as his fight with Theodora shows, he’s much weaker than his former peers, just able to match the female Zero Element user. In fact, the much more slender Kuzan is the physically strongest of their generation. Still, his physical strength is nothing to laugh at, as he’s able to punch-parry Whitebeard.
** ImplacableMan: When you plough through a whole BadassArmy and effortlessly shrug off everything but punches from Whitebeard in the pursuit of your enemy, you definitely deserve the title.
** PersonOfMassDestruction: He is a living volcano capable of launching huge gobs of lava on top of his enemies.
** ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill: Before changing for the better, it was doubtful that he even knew the concept of overkill existed.
* OhCrap: The look on his face the entire time, especially in the anime, when he's getting a first-hand demonstration of just why Whitebeard is called "The Strongest Man in the World". Also, the moment he realises his logia powers are utterly useless against Theodora’s, who just turns every attack of his into stone again and leaves him frostbitten.
* RealMenWearPink: The shirt he wears with his suit is rose-coloured.
** BadassInANiceSuit: That is a damn fine suit.
** FlowerMotifs: He has what looks like a rose pinned to his suit, and sports a floral pattern on both his shirt and a chest tattoo. The latter though gets him into trouble with the various respectable bathhouses in Marineford Town, who call him on the yakuza similarity.
* RedemptionPromotion: Got stronger after giving up being the Navy’s No. 1 Jerkass and getting his ass handed to him.
* SuperDrowningSkills: Big Time. He’s a devil fruit ability user, and, unlike the ice users of the Kumori, he can’t do anything about falling into the water.
* VillainByProxyFallacy: The first thing we see him do is blow up a ship full of evacuees that the Marines had promised to spare on the grounds that there might be the slightest possibility that there is a scholar on board who could read the Poneglyphs.
* WeaponOfChoice: Quite literally. After reforming, Sakazuki picks up fighting with a longsword to stop his overkill tendencies. The blacksmith who made it found it a funny idea to engrave it with the primary two articles of the Naval Code he used to violate frequently, much to his chagrin (even though later generations might interpret this as devotion).

Real name Kumori C. Theodora [曇理・シ。・テオドーラ, ''te o do ra''], Theo (never “Thea”) is the head of the Kumori Clan, Smoker’s eldest sister, and Kuzan’s wife. She is noted to be the “strongest woman” in the Navy, easily having the power of becoming admiral (which she becomes in Awakening), and intimidating Monkey D. Dragon. Already a deathly combatant without any extra powers, she has eaten the Zero-Zero Fruit, giving her the ultimate freezing powers and control over Thermodynamics. Marines call her the “most awesome thing alive since the invention of curry”, and her mere presence usually demands respect, a fact enhanced by her mastery of Sovereign’s Haki. Andrea describes the latter as a compulsion to bow to her, which is even worse for Danarans of any social standing.

Like all of her siblings but Smoker, Theo is noted to be left-handed, meaning that whenever she is not using her left to attack, she is trying to refrain from killing her target.

Theodora’s given name is Ancient Danaran, and thus gives people trouble to pronounce it properly, leading to her initial alias of “White Night” [白夜], which is also her codename as admiral.
Due to a genetic quirk, Theo is unable to blush, and will instead make various grimaces that indicate similar states of agitation. Out of her four children, only her eldest has inherited this trait.

However, the actual sword is laughable compared to the sublimation cutting blades she can create through her Devil Fruit power, which can only be blocked with a huge amount of Armament Haki. In turn, she’s idolised by many cadets and younger officers, and considered the very image of a proper female marine officer.

* AgreeToDisagree[=/=]NotSoDifferent[=/=]GoodVersusGood: With Monkey D. Dragon. Both have “a better world” firmly in place as their goal, it is just their methods, patience with the goal and ideals that differ – while Dragon approaches the corrupt system of the World Government with a blunt force approach (resistance, terrorism, warfare) for ideals unknown so far, Theodora and her entire clan as such work from inside the system (including the limitations of such methods) to bring back the very ideal the Navy writes on their coats [justice], and are willing to work for it for generation after generation (essentially, forever). The fact that sometimes Dragon’s methods bring quicker results as well as [[SwordOfDamocles the fact that he’s Garp’s son are the only reasons she lets him live so far]]. Also, since their goal is the same, they meet from time to time, usually exchanging information. However, Theo is not above punching and choking Dragon for perceived blunders (such as him miscalculating the attention Whitebeard’s Devil Fruit would bring to Dressrosa).
** LeaveBehindAPistol: This is what she promises Dragon for the day she'll capture him so he won't slander his father's name any further. Dragon just asks that he'll be given a glass of Icewine and the truth on the world beforehand.
* AnIcePerson: After eating the Zero-Zero Fruit, Theo is made of the Zero Element, the highest form of ice that allows control of Thermodynamics and kinetic energy in the surroundings.
** ElementalShapeshifting: The Zero-Zero Fruit allows her to turn either into living ice, living snow or living pure, live-stealing cold/living tempearture. She tends to have a boatload of fun with it to perform various disappearing acts on people, as the lattermost form renders her practically invisible.
** HarmlessFreezing: Averted usually. The dangers of her freezing you solid are mentioned and shown several times. She even demonstrated the ability to capture or sink an entire fleet with it. However, she has demonstrated to be able to do the harmless variant from time to time.
** HumanPopsicle: A common application of her power. Can do so at a distance.
** KillItWithIce: Her standard method of attack.
** NighInvulnerable: Like all Logia powers. Though her ice form can be shattered, doing so is little more than a brief inconvenience to her. Also, unlike her husband, she's not explicitly solid in the first place.
** PungeonMaster: Tends to make puns referring to extreme sub-zero temperatures, absoluteness and time-outs.
* {{Angrish}}: Doesn’t really curse, but when annoyed, she might fall back on this.
* AnimalMotif: The dragon is her seal. To be precise, it’s a Leviathan/Tiamat, a water/ice dragon.
* AwesomenessIsAForce: As one of only three known users of the Colours of the Warring Sovereign, Theo’s sheer awesomeness is legendary amongst Marines (who worship her and her awesomeness to the point they manage to ignore Boa Hancock) and the nightmare of every criminal in the seas, matched only by Kuzan. Entire crowds are nothing before her sheer awesomeness, and when the Straw Hats are faced with a focussed form of it, they are bent into submission (until Rayleigh Silvers shows up).
** DeathGlare: Theo’s glare makes even strong Haki users submit, and allegedly is dangerous enough to leave weak people in a coma for a while from mental stress. She frequently uses the skill for interrogation.
*** Even without Haki, her eyes take on a judging quality most people who fail in them would like to escape. They’re the reason Sakazuki always fails to meet her eyes for longer than a second. Andrea describes the feeling as being put on trial.
* BadassInCharge: Commander-Coordinator-in-Chief of the STOC. The person holding this position is not only the leader of the STOC, but also the strongest member, rivalling admirals in power. Later, Theo actually becomes admiral, handing the Coordinator-in-Chief position to her right-hand woman, Vice-Admiral Dawn.
* BadassLongCoat: Standard issue for a Marine Officer. Theo’s has white cuffs with a black and a blue stripe, the black standing for her command of the STOC.

** CulturedBadass: Has a penchant for fine food, drink and ice sculpting. She also considers getting drunk or binging food without appreciation an insult towards all the work that went into making them.
** FourStarBadass: Marine Admiral aka “Greatest Military Power”. Enough said.
** StaringDownCthulhu: It’s the reason she doesn’t have much of a concept of fear – she stared down Rayleigh Silvers as a teen and lived long enough for the injured Gold Roger to call him back.
* BadassCrew: Plural. As the Commander-In-Chief of the STOC, the minimum power level for being on one of her crews is 150 Doriki (average armed Marine: 10), and she has three of them.
* BattleCouple: With Kuzan. They also have, due to several similarities in abilities, a lot of synchronised/cooperative attacks, and are capable of syncing up their Haki, making it so powerful they can knock out anything but the highest lieutenants of their enemies.
** HappilyMarried: This goes without saying, but Theo and Kuzan value their love higher than any hiccups they ever had. Understandable though, as the world they live in has it out for them due to their jobs.
* BerserkButton: Threaten her family and you find yourself with a fistful of ice sent to the next wall or as a human popsicle. Be corrupt, morally or otherwise, and you get a YouWouldntLikeMeWhenImAngry. Same goes for attacking Marineford, which automatically turns it into ItsPersonal. Theo also hates chivalry to a certain extent, as she feels that it disrespects a woman’s strength; especially {{Chivalrous Pervert}}s are also on her shit list, since as a female marine, such overbearing behaviour is offensive, mistrusting, degrading and disrespectful for her strength (meaning that both Sanji and Cavendish have another thing coming for them). To her, chivalry has no place in battle. Finally, she is barely able to stand the sight of Monkey D. Dragon for personal reasons.
* BewareOfTheNiceOnes: Theo is normally perfectly sociable, and so lazy in attitude that she often cannot be bothered to stand or sit while talking to someone, even pirates, but once she gets her sights on you, you better order a coffin-maker.
* BigDamnHeroes: Does so in her first face to face meeting with Luffy for Andrea.
* BigSisterInstinct: Same as MamaBear, but particularly towards Smoker, who is the youngest (and most maverick). [[spoiler:This goes so far that when Drake nearly murders her brother Smoker, she doesn’t trust herself that she would not retaliate with force and not investigate properly, sending Isshô instead.]] Flynn has the habit of taking her place in that if she’s not around.
* BlingOfWar: Not as impressive as Sengoku (who wears a ChestOfMedals), but still remarkable enough when she wears Ceremonial Dress Uniform. Her pronged hair sticks also count – they are military awards.
** About the latter, Akainu mentions that she has ''20 pairs'' of these, meaning that she got ''twenty different occasions'' for which she was awarded with twenty different types of Sea King Bone prongs.
* BrilliantButLazy[=/=]ProfessionalSlacker: Being an Admiral, she’s one of the World Government’s “Ultimate Military Forces”. They are the strongest the WG has to offer; also, as Sengoku’s student, Theo is a genius in her own right. However, Shiroyoru herself is a very carefree and lazy person. She even upholds what she dubs as “Lazy Justice” (unless really pissed).
** It is later on revealed that her lazy habits are a mix of her natural sense of knowing when to act and when to be patient and an effort of trying to balance out the stress of everything she has on her plate as a marine and the “queen” of the Danarans.
** SleepyHead: A family trait that goes nicely with Theo’s lazy/relaxed attitude, same as her husband. Notable instances are her habit of falling asleep at her desk. It goes so far that any ship associated with her keeps a pair of deck chairs, including that of her old teacher, Garp. As such, she can fall asleep nearly on command.
*** InstantWakingSkills: Ironically enough, Theodora (and Kuzan) will awaken rather easily firing on all cylinders if disturbed, and thoroughly annoyed if there was no reason to.
*** WakeUpFighting: As a Spec Ops officer, she tends to do that if the person’s haki is too unfamiliar or radiates malevolence, usually resorting to her devil fruit or a punch.
** NervesOfSteel: Her being the lazybones she is, she is composed to a fault in battle.
* TheCoatsAreOff: Does that when she’s about to do something big, drastic or when she’s going truly serious. [[spoiler:She even makes a coat rack from ice to toss them aside.]]
* ColonyDrop: Can send giant icebergs at a target at will.
* CombatPragmatist: Fights with pretty much everything available, a result of being trained by Garp, Tsuru and Sengoku and being the Grandmaster of Eight Shadows, which stresses pragmatism over “looking pretty”. Also, she has little trouble to suck out the stamina of her opponent while fighting.
** GroinAttack: Eight Shadows is a combat style, and is not above this, and thus Theo isn’t, as its Grandmaster.
** StrongAsTheyNeedToBe: Despite the fact she is easily capable of total overkill, Theodora tries to avoid the same, mainly because of the potential damage to the environment.

Also, as a Navy admiral, [[EliteArmy she has control of thousands of soldiers]], [[AFatherToHisMen but will never unnecessarily sacrifice even one of them]], considering doing so as DirtyBusiness at best and a disgrace at worst, since after all, they are all loyal troops. As the same, she qualifies as a PersonOfMassDestruction, but avoids hurting or killing innocent bystanders at all costs, even if it means losing the criminal. Her devil fruit also counts, as its ability to steal any type of energy (including life) is considered so dangerous her family keeps it as a family treasure and perfected the art of reincarnating devil fruits for keeping it under wraps. * DuelToTheDeath: In Andrea’s Awakening, this is what happened between Akainu and Shiroyoru during the Time Skip of the Manga. The two had the first ever feud between Admirals, and it was over him being in line for the Fleet Admiral position. The conflict escalated to the point of a “death match” (Staged) on the barren island of Punk Hazard, lasting twelve nights and eleven days and permanently altering the climate of the island, making it a permanently frozen wasteland where blizzards tear through one's clothes. In the end, the winner was Shiroyoru, but, in a rare moment of sympathy but a typical moment of honour, she spared his life, and the latter proceeded to ditch his attitude, becoming a knight of Danara Marina. He is still considered somewhat extreme and definitely a fanatic, but above all, he is the king of atoners.
* EverythingIsBetterWithPenguins: Theo and Kuzan breed Super Penguins, her own being Camille, Camel’s life mate.
* [[EveryoneHasStandards Justice Has Standards]]: Theo is a Marine, and thus is everything but soft (hey, they’re Marines). Yet she was outright disgusted when Akainu (then known as Vice-Admiral Sakazuki) blew up a ship of innocent evacuees on the off chance that one criminal managed to get on board. So much so that once he aims for becoming Fleet Admiral of all things after Sengoku resigns, she beats the living crap out of him so much he nearly ends up taking his life, having a Grade-A identity crisis.

** TheFettered: Played straight, and goes rarely beyond the MoralEventHorizon, unlike her Absolute Justice AxCrazy comrades.
* [[ColorFailure Eye Colour Failure]]: Had a massive case of it the moment Shiki attacks Marineford the first time. To be fair, he could have easily flattened her house.
* FictionalCounterpart: Of Tokugawa Ieyasu. The lazy justice mentality is just one of MANY similarities. Also, with Kuzan, of Justinian and Theodora of Byzantium in their glory days.
* ForGreatJustice: Her clan has been working on that for the last millennium, with only one total failure (but that was as big as it can go, resulting in the fall of their kingdom and the emergence of the World Government). Theo is not above forging a wide-spread conspiracy against the World Nobles or threatening the Five Elder Stars with renouncing the Navy’s fealty for the sake of True Justice.
* TheFourLoves: Theodora holds all of them for her husband, her family and the Navy. They are also the reason she is so angry with Andy; [[spoiler: had Kuzan truly given in, she would eventually have accepted the truth that he had given up but as Andrea took advantage of him to the point of having to call it rape, she makes it her mission to point out every mistake and fault of the young woman, beginning with this fact and the other reason why Kuzan would never have bedded her willingly had he been in his right mind – they have a daughter around Andrea’s age.]]
* FriendToAllChildren: Like all her siblings, Theo has a big soft spot for children, much to the surprise of many civilians who meet her the first time. (Granted, since most times people meet her it’s a situation in which shit has long since hit the fan, this is somewhat crass.) It is also noted that whenever children are involved on the battlefield, she will hesitate to use lethal force on a large scale. However, if you are stupid enough to hurt children or use them, you better plan your funeral.
* [[GeniusBruiser Genius]] LightningBruiser: As the student of Garp, Theo learnt how to make her very body into a deadly weapon, and sometimes joins her mentor throwing cannonballs, although she admits she isn’t even near his level in that department. She’s also physically faster than any of her peers, excluding Borsalino when using his DF powers. As for the genius, she’s not just an admiral, but also the Coordinator-in-Chief of the Special Forces, and pulls off the absurd stunt of timing their return to Marineford so precisely that they have their own Big Damn Heroes moment. And she’s Sengoku’s student too.
* GlowingEyesOfDoom: Has even an attack that deliberately invokes this. Beyond that, it is unclear if it is her devil fruit or her Haki that make them glow when she is angry, given that Kuzan can do something similar.
* [[GoodParents Good Mother]]: Not as much as Kuzan, who has the household privileges and duties as the consort, but Theodora’s children are never shy to seek out their mother, and hate to disappoint the woman, who in turn always does her best for their sake, never being short with a word of praise or encouragement. Like Kuzan, she considers the use of her Haki for dealing with children a cheap trick, proof of her parenting skills.
* GoodIsNotSoft: Theo is a nightmare to most pirates and criminals in the that freezes them to solid ice world with a single stomp, and puts the fear of the Sea Gods into corrupt or stray-from-the-path Marines or worse, makes them change their ways with only words, but to most of her allies and the public, she is a shining example of grace, beauty and heroism.
** CruelMercy: Theo lets her enemies live more often than not so they are faced with the consequences of their deeds. She will also tell absolutely stray-from-the-path Marines or Revolutionaries the legendary Truth of the World before offing them just to see their misery at their ignorance. She also has a thing for letting people live and terrify them with her vast superiority in skill and power, making it clear that she could have hurt or killed them and has the skill and power to not needing to.
* GoodPeopleHaveGoodSex: Theo and Kuzan have the habit of playing relatively harmless sex games (compared to Borsalino’s like of bondage and submission on his part) and reserving entire days for these, such as leaving a trail of clothing for the other to find the owner of said clothes. It goes so far that their children have the habit of staying on base when this happens; Evermist however comments that she’d rather have them raunchy like that than estranged from each other.
** RightThroughTheWall: [[LampshadeHanging Lampshaded]] by her daughter ''Evermist'' of all people, who asks her to be “not so loud”, indicating that this is a bad habit of theirs.
* GoodThingYouCanHeal: Theo can cheat recovery times and the most grievous of injuries by drawing upon life energy she’s stolen beforehand, which is the reason she doesn’t have a single major injury after fighting with Sakazuki.
* GratuitousForeignLanguage: Tends to speak High Danaran to her followers. Sometimes, a few words in the same slip out to others. It’s arguable though, since Danaran is the language of the Navy and her actual native tongue; the common language (aka Japanese) of the Twenty is in fact foreign to her.
* [[HeroAntagonist Heroine Antagonist]]: There’s nothing villainous or evil about her; she just happens to oppose the Straw Hats by default.
* HeroicBSOD[=/=][[HeroicSafeMode Safe Mode]]: The reason Theo can use the attack ''Thief of the White Night'' was a moment of this, combined with UnstoppableRage, as it enabled her to instinctively reach for the lives of her enemies. Later, she learns how to replicate the effect consciously, and also perform the opposite (expelling Life Energy); “Rejuvenation” on herself and others as long as she has extra “life” stored up.
* HeroicLineage[=/=]{{Famous Ancestor}}s: The Kumori clan descend from Kumori C. Aletheia and Prince Consort Justinian, the founders of the Navy, and various visionary Fleet Admirals like Lord Acton. Thus, it is completely made up of Marines and retired Marines, with Theo being just its latest leader. Exceptions are the so-called helpful vagrants, homeless wanderers with the blood of the Kumori who travel from place to place to help. But in the end, the inability to help enough people will make them join the Marines, with Kuzan being the most famous example in recent history.
* HonorBeforeReason: Has a few moments of that in the case of Red-Haired Shanks, Whitebeard and Trafalgar Law. It is also the reason she often refuses to duel with pirates or freezes their crews first, as she would otherwise be honour-bound to not attack the comrades of said pirates.
* HyperAwareness: Theo’s senses are on par with that of the other admirals, and superior to her younger siblings safe for Flynn, who is infamously paranoid. Also, her Kenbunshoku Haki has a ridiculous range due to her DF powers being able to sense energy sources, especially heat and life.
* ImADoctorNotAPlaceholder: Uses the pattern whenever people get annoyed with Kuzan pulling a disappearing act, usually as “I am his wife, not his babysitter”. To be fair, Kuzan does the very same when she goofs off. Variants include “I married him, but that doesn’t mean I own him”.
* INeedAFreakingDrink: Tends towards that in moments of exasperation with her fellow Marines, the World Government and the Straw Hat Pirates. Notably, in Chapter 19, when the fake Straw Hats ruin her day off, she freezes most of them first and then goes off with these exact words.
* [[KiAttacks Ki Attacks[=/=]Manipulation]]: Is one of the most powerful Haki users in the Navy, matched only by a handful of people in the world, together with Whitebeard, Kuzan, Shanks and Garp. She also has the Kumori-unique form of Conqueror’s Haki, Colours of the Sovereign, allowing her to use Oath to Order speech.

** Does that regularly to the most vile of pirates, especially if they threaten civilians and/or subordinates. Threatened to do that to Akainu several times.
* [[ManOfKryptonite Made Of Kryptonite]]: Somewhat. Theodora’s devil fruit has the (un)fortunate ability to render nearly all devil fruits or incoming attacks useless since everything in the world runs on some form of energy, reducing her opponents to fighting her physically, which is also not a good idea due to her usually vast physical superiority. (At least, she won’t stop you from trying to hit her by taking the air out of your attacks!)
** Also, as she reveals at the end of the fight with Sakazuki, fighting her for a long time is hazardous, as she’ll steal your stamina while you’re at it, causing her to become stronger the longer the fight is drawn out. In her own words, you have to defeat her very early on in one strike to avoid making her stronger, unless you’re made of limitless energy (Star-Star Fruit, Glint-Glint Fruit).
* MamaBear: Theo is the head of the Kumori clan, and does ''not'' take well to anyone threatening her children.
* MasterOfAll: Pretty literal. Theodora’s raw strength is enough to ''[[PunchParry punch/kick-parry]] Sakazuki'' one-on-one, she is master in two hand-to-hand styles (Meteor Fist, Six Powers) and ''Grand''master of Eight Shadows, which also qualifies her as a master swordswoman amongst other things. Finally, she has mastered complete control of her devil fruit.
** DualWielding: Demonstrated only once so far, straight up in the duel between her and Sakazuki; Theo has little trouble fighting with a spear ''and'' her sword at the same time, which is, while not completely unheard of in RealLife, all the more curious due to the vastly differing reach of either weapon.

All of them are heirlooms, most of them dating back to the Void Century, proof of their superior make.

* MeaningfulName: Theodora is Danaran for “the gods have given”, alluding to her immense talent, her Royal Haki and compass powers. “Kumori” is a Japanese/Common Tongue pun – it can either mean cloudy (as in weather) or Cloud (of) Justice. Shiroyoru, the White Night, is the realm of ice in eastern and western magic, as it is a poetic way to refer to the arctic summer – the polar day. Even the persistent mispronunciation of her given name by most characters In-Universe counts – Teiô tora means Sovereign Tiger, the former befitting the royal heritage of the Kumori. As for the latter, the tiger is well-known for its ferocity and watchfulness. It keeps a very close guard on its cubs, watches vigilantly for an opportunity to catch its prey, and walks great distances to patrol its territory, both alluding to her Mama Bear persona and her diligence as a Marine.
* ModestRoyalty: Theo consistently wears standard issue uniform despite being amongst the richest people in all of Marineford and the leader of the Danarans.

Also, she has repeatedly been called one of the four best Haki users in the entire force both in terms of raw power and skill.
*** Theodora didn’t eat her Devil Fruit until she was nearly 20, a week after her wedding, while she was already Vice-Admiral, meaning she got to that rank all on Charles Atlas Superpower alone.
** HeroKiller: While way more reasonable than some other marines, she is still one of the Marine's feared "Greatest Attack Force". If you’re a pirate, this is the likely outcome.
** ImplausibleFencingPowers: Part of the Eight Shadows combat style, where the pressure in blows becomes long-range cutting with a sword. It becomes insane when she combines it with her devil fruit, which allows her to cut a mountain complete with laboratory in it in half. From a distance.

** PersonOfMassDestruction: She can start an ice age all by herself if he wanted to. Requirement for becoming Admiral. Borsalino comments that one of the requirements of becoming admiral is having combat power whose equivalent is higher than a Buster Call.
*** Justified – Theo’s Devil Fruit abilities have the power to turn everything into a frozen wasteland and start an ice age with indefinite length. Also, normal ice infused with her element turns into a deadly booby-trap that freezes anyone stupid enough stepping on it and not made of ice. And finally, each of the admirals is supposed to be able to match one of the Four Emperors in combat power.
*** She has such mastery over this power she can break [[spoiler:Jewel Sheet Ice, and used that skill to requisition Don Chinjao’s entire treasure for the Marine Vaults]].
* ThePhilosopher: Has her moments, usually when asking assessing trick questions that have “I don’t know” as correct answer (one of her stock questions in officer assessment is “What is Justice?”, being a short form of the phrase, “If man is corrupt, then what is justice?”). She usually has a way of thinking that is well summarised by the old Socrates quote, “As for me, all I know is that I know nothing”, believing that it is important to think things through, including their moral implications.
** SecretTestOfCharacter: Her trick questions tend to be that, or at the least of a person’s willingness to think and trying to understand.
* RapunzelHair: Not quite as long, but as it is butt-length it counts. Theodora is one of the few people who get a 40% discount at Suikô’s bathhouse for getting her hair washed and trimmed because of the sheer number of times she lets someone do it for her.

She also values the lives of civilians more than Borsalino does, who tends to overdo it ''all the time'', and usually tries to put them above the mission. In terms of Lawful Goodness, she tends to act as Type 2; however, there are times she might act as a Type 3.
** TheHighQueen: Technically, she’s the queen of Danara Marina, and absurdly popular with the Marines, who consider her the most awesome thing alive since the invention of curry (given that most Marines are curry-obsessed, that says something). Is frequently pointed out as the prime example of what a female Marine should be like.

* SuperpowerLottery: A clear winner: she ate a Cardinal class elemental Logia type Devil Fruit, one of which only four in the world exist, making it rarer than Mythical Zoan (which are around 10). Also, in addition to the standard benefits of a Logia fruit, her freezing power is nearly unique in that it lets her harmlessly cross the open ocean – negating the one weakness all devil fruit users share, making her, Kuzan and later on her daughter stand out even amongst their peers.
** SuperDrowningSkills: Averted. She can use her Devil Fruit powers to freeze the sea below her, giving her a massive advantage over other Devil Fruit users.
** Not only can she do things like ride a bike from island to island or run across water, she can also prevent others from doing so by freezing the ocean. In a world of water where pretty much everyone travels by ship, entire armies are less effective than her, a fact commented on several times.
** NighInvulnerable[=/=]ElementalRockPaperScissors: Even compared to other admirals and vice admirals (Sakazuki), Theo’s elemental power being a Cardinal puts her above the average logia user, as it allows her to become the Zero Element, which gives total control of Thermodynamics and energy in general, rendering many powers useless, and has only two known weaknesses, one being Sea-Prism Stone/Still Water and the other being the power of the opposite element’s cardinal, the Star-Star Fruit which generates limitless amounts of energy, cancelling out the Zero Element. Another fruit that cancels her out is interestingly a Mythical Zoan, specifically, the ''Bird-Bird Fruit, Model: Firebird'', which never runs out of life force. Finally, the user of the Glint-Glint Fruit, Borsalino, has also a real chance to fight her due to his power being limitless light energy. Otherwise, good luck trying to find a way to hurt her with something else but Haki – her power steals the energy you need to even get your attack to connect.

While being the youngest of the trio, he is physically the strongest due to the physical nature of his devil fruit and him having only eaten it long after making Vice Admiral; he is also the one Sengoku trusts the most in terms of ethics and skills, and is considered highly popular with the troops. Entire crowds are nothing before his sheer awesomeness, and with a focussed form of it, even strong opponents are bent into submission. A rather restrained version aimed at Snow Woman Monet was enough to nearly break her mind, while freezing the bystanding Caesar Clown with the side-output in the spot.

** HappilyMarried: This goes without saying, but Theo and Kuzan value their love higher than any hiccups they ever had. Understandable though, as the world they live in has it out for them due to their jobs.
* BewareOfTheNiceOnes: Kuzan is normally perfectly sociable, and so lazy in attitude that he often cannot be bothered to stand or sit while talking to someone, even pirates, but once he gets his sights on you, you better call in a coffin-maker, as the Straw-Hats learnt the hard way.
* BerserkButton: Oddly enough, it’s him having a case of the ''Green Eyed Monster'', as it is a exceptionally bad idea to flirt in front of him with either his wife ''or'' his daughters. Beyond that, like every Kumori and true Marine, he hates indoctrinated fools and traitors. * BigDamnHeroes: Is implied to have had his moments in the past. Does so too on Secon Island, saving both the civilians and the Straw Hats from a pyroclastic flow.
* BrilliantButLazy[=/=]ProfessionalSlacker: Being an Admiral, he’s one of the World Government’s “Ultimate Military Powers”. They are the strongest the WG has to offer. However, Aokiji himself is a very carefree and lazy person. He even upholds what he dubs as “Lazy Justice”. This philosophy does not mean you can take him lightly, however. It becomes both hilarious and sad once he makes ''Fleet Admiral''.
** It is later on revealed that his lazy habits are a mix of his natural sense of knowing when to act and when to be patient and an effort of trying to balance out the stress of everything he has on his plate as a marine and the “warring king” of the Danarans.
** SleepyHead: A family trait that goes nicely with Kuzan’s lazy/relaxed attitude, same as his wife. It goes so far that any ship associated with him keeps a pair of deck chairs, including that of his old teacher, Garp. As such, he can fall asleep nearly on command.

** HomelessHero[=/=]KnightErrant: Used to be that as a Vagrant – he travelled around and helped people. He reportedly joined the Navy because he couldn't help ''enough'' people despite not thinking much of the World Government.

* [[EveryoneHasStandards Even Justice Has Standards]]: While mostly a good-natured person, Kuzan is nonetheless a marine – and one you wouldn't call soft. Yet he was outright disgusted when Akainu (then known as Vice-Admiral Sakazuki) blew up a ship of innocent evacuees on the off chance that one criminal managed to get on board. So much so that twenty years later, when the Fleet Admiral position opened up, he probably would have done whatever he could to ensure that Akainu did not become Fleet Admiral, despite originally having little interest in the position himself (Sengoku originally nominated Aokiji for the position; Akainu only became a candidate due to the support of several high-level government officials), but Theo stepped in before he, who had a severe elemental disadvantage in terms of devil fruit to Sakazuki, would be forced to fight.

It is also noted that whenever children are involved on the battlefield, he will hesitate to use lethal force on a large scale. However, if you are stupid enough to hurt children or use them, you better plan your funeral.
* [[GeniusBruiser Genius]] LightningBruiser: As the student of Garp, Kuzan learnt how to make his very body into a deadly weapon, and sometimes joins his mentor throwing cannonballs, although he freely admits he isn’t even near his level in that department. He’s also physically faster than any of his peers, excluding Borsalino when using his DF powers and his own wife, and physically the strongest of their generation. As for the genius, he’s not just an admiral, but also the commander of the Marineford garrison. And he’s Sengoku’s student too.

* HonourBeforeReason: His honour was the only reason he didn’t capture the Straw Hats when he first met them, as he agreed to fight Luffy one-on-one and not harm Luffy’s crew.
* HyperAwareness: Kuzan’s senses are on par with that of the other admirals, and superior to his in-laws safe for Flynn, who is infamously paranoid. Also, his Kenbunshoku Haki has a ridiculous range due to his DF powers being able to sense energy sources, especially heat.

** CharlesAtlasSuperpower: Kuzan is a Grandmaster in three different martial styles, and was trained by the very incarnation of a Charles Atlas Superpower in the Navy – Garp – which accounts for him being able to lay ''physical'' beat-downs on most characters in the series, including punch/kick-parrying ''Sakazuki'' and the magma man being the one who was the worse for the wear. Kuzan is in fact physically the strongest out of the pre-timeskip admirals, his raw strength allowing him to overpower most opponents – even ''giants ''like Saul – without even using his devil fruit (he attributes it to having to hurl icebergs, but as he made vice admiral without his devil fruit, this is clearly a joke). Also, he has repeatedly been called one of the best Haki users in the entire force both in terms of raw power and skill.

** SuperDrowningSkills: Averted. He can use his Devil Fruit powers to freeze the sea below him, giving him a massive advantage over other Devil Fruit users.
*** Not only can he do things like ride his bike from island to island, he can also prevent others from doing so by freezing the ocean. In a world of water where pretty much everyone travels by ship, entire armies are less effective than him.
*** There’s only a handful of fruits that have any kind of advantage over his (and all of those do have Super Drowning Skills) – the Magma-Magma, the Tremor-Tremor, and the Dark-Dark – and maybe the Glint-Glint. Unfortunately for Kuzan, all of those fruits belong (or belonged) to some of the only people he would actually need to fight seriously against. The other, higher forms of ice are all in the family.

* YouWouldntLikeMeWhenImAngry: Kuzan’s temper is usually rather carefree and lazy, and he is famed for his mercy and kindness, but angering him is angering a Natural Hazard.
** BewareOfTheNiceOnes: Kuzan is a good father, a good leader, and considered truly benevolent by many, but if you warrant to be brought to justice, prepare for an icy grave.
** TranquilFury: In accordance with his element, Kuzan doesn’t yell when truly angry. He’ll just decimate/ruin you as efficiently as possible. And while he’s at it, he’ll be so correct and polite you’ll feel like dirt.

*** TheSlowWalk: For someone who’s among the ten fastest marines of the current era, he pulls that one off pretty well. It helps that as logia, most attacks just fly ''through'' him as if they weren’t even there.

** WeaponOfChoice[=/=]AncestralWeapon: More like ''[[BreadEggsBreadedEggs Ancestral Weapons of Choice]]'' – Kuzan wields a world-famous rapier called ''Kuna de Invierno'', an equally famous partisan called ''Kuzunoha'', and one of the family’s particular brand of super-long sea-stone-tipped Jutte, a ''Meitei''. All of them are heirlooms, most of them dating back to the Void Century, proof of their superior make.

* BerserkButton: Threaten her family and you find yourself with a fistful of ice sent to the next wall or as a human popsicle. Be corrupt, morally or otherwise, and you get a YouWouldntLikeMeAngry. Same goes for attacking Marineford, which automatically turns it into ItsPersonal. Theo also hates chivalry to a certain extent, as she feels that it disrespects a woman’s strength; especially {{Chivalrous Pervert}}s are also on her shit list, since as a female marine, such overbearing behaviour is offensive, mistrusting, degrading and disrespectful for her strength (meaning that both Sanji and Cavendish have another thing coming for them). To her, chivalry has no place in battle. Finally, she is barely able to stand the sight of Monkey D. Dragon for personal reasons.

* YouWouldntLikeMeAngry: Kuzan’s temper is usually rather carefree and lazy, and he is famed for his mercy and kindness, but angering him is angering a Natural Hazard.

* {{Badass}}: He might have been a complete and utter dick, but you have to admit he seemed to be the most badass Admiral of the Marines (mostly because he didn’t hesitate to use the maximum amount of force). Most notably, he melts off half of Whitebeard’s face and not only survives Whitebeard's counterattack of ''two earthquake punches'', but also getting back up and setting his sights on the next target. It takes Crocodile and pretty much the entire remaining Whitebeard crew just to slow this guy down.
** He is also strong enough to fight ''Theodora'', the strongest ''woman'' in the Navy, for nearly twelve days straight despite being at a complete disadvantage, in a battle that completely fucked up Punk Hazard's climate, causing it to become a frozen wasteland laid into stasis. Although, it was implied that she actually went easy on him, proving him much weaker than his former rank-mates.
** BadassGrandpa: He’s 56 after the time-skip, but ironically, his demotion made him even stronger.

* {{Badass}}: This goes without saying, but she fought Akainu for 12 days (12 nights and 11 days to be precise) straight and was mostly mentally exhausted at the end. She is also one of the few who can openly defy Sengoku and get away with it. Used to be assessment officer in the Marine Academy as a teenager, and handed a young Akainu his ass for several reasons, amongst them disrespect, chauvinism and lack of empathy (primarily though his inability to understand that the fundamental question of the Marines is what would make them truly just).
** BadassInCharge: Commander-Coordinator-in-Chief of the STOC. The person holding this position is not only the leader of the STOC, but also the strongest member, rivalling admirals in power. Later, Theo actually becomes admiral, handing the Coordinator-in-Chief position to her right-hand woman, Vice-Admiral Dawn.
** BadassLongCoat: Standard issue for a Marine Officer. Theo’s has white cuffs with a black and a blue stripe, the black standing for her command of the STOC.
** BadassInANiceSuit: Theo wears STOC uniform. Always.
** BadassPrincess[=/=]LadyOfWar[=/=]RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: Head of the Kumori clan and Grandmaster of Eight Shadows. As such and as an admiral, she’s been feared and revered all over the seas.
