* DirtyCoward: Sukon and Ukon leave Tayuya to fend for herself due to their fear of [[spoiler: Kimimaro]].

** By the end of Hakumei, an Uchiha (Yumi) still defects from Konoha and attempts (or rather, in her case, succeeds) to kill their best friend in order to gain the required power to face Itachi. Said Uchiha had also been mind-raped by Itachi shortly before defecting.

** A ROOT ninja tries to trick Ino into letting him into her family's flower shop by using a genjustu that sounds like her father's voice. She doesn't buy it because he calls her "Princess", while her father actually calls her "[[EmbarrassingNickname BonBon]]".

* ParentsKnowTheirChildren: A point of contrast between [[spoiler: Mikoto and Fugaku Uchiha and Hiashi Hyuuga. The Uchihas fail to recognize Sasuke when he's standing right in front of them. Mikoto learns his true identity from a third party and Fugaku doesn't live to learn the truth. Hiashi recognizes Hinata and Neji the instant he sees them, despite the genjustu used to hide their Byakugan]].

** [[spoiler: Kimimaro]] planned to kill each member of the Sound Four. After he kills Jirobo and Kidomaru, Sukon and Ukon completely abandon Tayuya to save their own necks. Disgusted by their lack of remorse for leaving their teammate to die, he decides to just take Tayuya prisoner.

* HeKnowsTooMuch: The reason why the kids have to leave Konoha in the first place: they know Danzou will kill them for having witnessed the actual circumstances of the Third Hokage's death. Later on, some members of Hakumei consider killing [[spoiler:Shino]] when they realize he has put two and two together.

* AdaptationalEarlyAppearance: Sai, Gaara, Haku, Kimimaro, Tsunade, Shizune, Jiraiya, Isaribi, and [[spoiler: Yugito]] all show up much sooner than in canon. Naruto learns the truth about his parentage and jinchuuriki status when he's only 7 years old, as oppose to when he's 12 years old.

** It's eventually that [[spoiler: Orochimaru]] had a seal on his brain for over a decade and it is implied to have been controlling his actions, meaning he's not totally culpable for what he did during that time.

* ChekhovsGun: Hinata, Gaara, and Sai get an umbrella from an Ame nin in the Forest of Death that can shot a large number of senbon at once and decide to give it Haku. He later uses it [[spoiler: during the Chunin war]].

** During the invansion/rebellion, the joint Sound/Sand forces and Kinen/Hakumei all agree on taking out any ROOT nearby before attacking each other.
** [[spoiler: Itachi teams up with Yugito simply because she is also on Hakumei's side, even though he's supposed to be hunting her for being a junchuuriki. Jiraiya is too desperate to even question why Itachi is fighting with them]].

* FluffyTheTerrible: Naruto dubs the Nine-Tailed Fox and One-Tailed Tanuki "Fuzzy Wuzzy" and "Sandy Wandy" after the rest of the group find out about them.

** Hiashi vs Mikoto and Fugaku. [[spoiler: Hiashi recognizes Hinata and Neji as soon as he sees them again, and risks his life to protect them even after they attack Konoha. Hinata is completely heartbroken by his death. Mikoto and Fugaku don't recognize Sasuke, and Mikoto denounces him as a traitor when he chooses not to stay with her. Sasuke doesn't feel anything with Fugaku dies]].

* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler:Hiashi]]. See You Shall Not Pass below.

* IdentityImpersonator: While in the Land of Waves, Hakumei pretend to their own middlemen whenever someone tries to hire them. During their fight on the bridge, they make sure shadow clones of themselves are present at the same time they are.

* PowerPerversionPotential: Lampshaded when Sakura mentions that Hinata could use the Tenshi Byakagun to see the guys without their clothes on.

* AllTheOtherReindeer: Naruto and Sakura when they were in Konoha, Gaara when he was still in Suna, Rock Lee for being unable to mold chakra, and {{implied|Trope}} for Tenten later on for being a foreign-born Konoha nin. As a result, Tenten is trying desperately to fit in.

* TheChessmaster: Danzo frames Iwa for the assassination of the Third Hokage and uses the fallout to manipulate his way into power. Once he becomes the Fifth Hokage, he slowly, subtly turns Konoha into a PoliceState.

** Chiyo holds a grudge against Konoha for what it did to her family, but she doesn't extent that grudge to the current generation because they're not to blame for what the actions of the older generations.
* ChildhoodHomeRediscovery: When Naruto, Sakura, Sasuke, Sai, Neji and Hinata return to Konoha. Downplayed with Neji and Hinata because they were rarely allowed to leave the Hyuga Compound as children and aren't familiar with most of the village.

* EnemyMine: During the invansion/rebellion, the joint Sound/Sand forces and Kinen/Hakumei all agree on taking out any ROOT nearby befoore attacking each other.

* ForgottenFirstMeeting: [[spoiler: Sasuke and Yumi]] previously knew each other because [[spoiler: they're both from the same clan and she was engaged to his brother. Sasuke doesn't recognize her at first because she's pretending to be younger than she really is; Yumi doesn't recognize him because she thought he was dead]].

* GambitPileup: [[spoiler: Hakumei and Kinen were planning a rebellion in Konoha on the same day Suna and Oto were planning an invasion. Things quickly spiral out of control after there's a mix-up in signals and they mistakenly launch their respective attacks too early]].

** Hakumei deliberately hides how skilled they are during the Chunin Exams, both to avoid suspicion about why they're better than average genin and to make sure they aren't identified by their distinctive fighting techniques. [[spoiler: Once the rebellion/invasion begins in earnest, the gloves are off]].

** Hyuuga Hiashi disowns Hinata and Neji after Hinata removes Neji's [[RestrainingBolt Caged Bird seal]].

* LaserGuidedTykebomb: Thanks to his actions, [[HoistByHisOwnPetard Danzo inadvertently forms Hakumei]], who seek to destroy him. [[LampshadeHanging Tsunade even points it out.]] Considering that Akatsuki is one of the reasons that Naruto and Gaara are Jinchuuriki,they also count toward them as well.

* MoralityPet: Zabuza has some genuine affection for Isaribi.

Even though Danzo ''didn't'' know they were witnesses, he still planned to have them killed because they could contradict the official story is that they were kidnapped by Iwa nin.
** It's revealed that the Hyuga elders planned to killed Hinata and Neji to protect the clan's secrets, but they disappeared before this happened.

A {{Naruto}} ForWantOfANail that takes the WhatIf of [[RightWingMilitiaFanatic Danzo's bastardry]] taken to its LogicalExtreme. Danzo kills TheLeader of the Leaf Village and in the following ReignOfTerror takes over. Unfortunately, he didn't count on six neglected children witnessing him in the act. As the kids escape with secrets given by the dying Hokage, aided and abetted by one of the ANBU, they pick up other lost children... and a force that will be the twilight of its enemies is born.

** Isaribi[[spoiler:, Kakashi and Shino]] during the Wave arc and the Inuzuka clan.

** Sasuke still has an avenger complex waiting to be triggerd despite not seeing his whole clan get killed or being mind-raped by Itachi.

* SadisticChoice: Yumi imposes one on Sasuke when she [[spoiler:brings his mother into the street to convince him to stay in Konoha]]. It stalls him, right up until [[spoiler:[[BigDamnHeroes Hiashi]] [[spoiler:shows up]].

* ImprobableAge: Naruto and co. successfully escape a very large village with very important information, collect three other strangers, two of whom are three years older than they are, and live on their own for at least a year, all at the tender ages of six or seven. Then again, [[CombatMedic Tsunade]] notes that [[DeconstructedTrope the kids have various amounts of ailments when she finds them]] and, well, [[InstantAwesomeJustAddNinja they're ninja-in-training]].

* CompetitiveBalance:
** FragileSpeedster: Hinata relies more on her eyes, speed and poisons to fight.
** GlassCannon: Sasuke and Haku. Kimimaro is something of a "Glass Bruiser" since he does have high attack, defense and speed but his physical stamina is low.
** GlacierWaif: Gaara and Sakura are both relatively fast but both are more known for their offensive power.
** JackOfAllStats: Sai has none of the above, both good and bad.
** LightningBruiser: Naruto and Neji only lack the bad.
** StoneWall: Gaara as well because of his sand wall.
