* ChildSoldiers: Heavily discussed before being played straight. One of the driving conflicts of the fic is that NERV doesn't want to employ the three children as child Soldiers in their war against the Others, in direct contradiction to how NERV operates in most versions of Evangelion, both official and fan related, where nobody seems to bat an eye at the usage of child soldiers, and if they do, it isn't enough to convince anyone to oppose it. Here, NERV avoids doing so for the longest time, constantly trying to find grown humans who can pilot them instead, until an attack by one of the Messengers forces [[spoiler:Naoko to put Rei into an Evangelion for the first time, leading to said Messenger's destruction]]. Afterwards, NERV begins to grudgingly accept that they will have to employ the children as pilots, though [[spoiler:Gendo and Yui have yet to bring Shinji back from America for piloting purposes]].

* AdultFear: As Japan became increasingly militaristic following Arrival Day, Yui dreaded the thought that her then-unborn son Shinji would one day die in a far-off battlefield with a rifle in hand, a fear not assuaged when her adopted teenage daughter Misato announced she wanted to enlist in the JSSDF to join the fight against the Others once she was old enough. [[spoiler: Eight years later, Misato is critically wounded during a JSSDF operation in Indonesia, when her convoy is ambushed by a local terrorist militia.]]
