* DramaPreservingHandicap: While the original Digidestined had 'internalised' the power of their Crests by the time of the final battle with Apocalymon, their reals in the real world have caused that power to weaken, restricting their partners to Champion forms save for particularly dire situations (such as [[spoiler:Kari being sent to the Dark World or TK and Patamon facing Blackwargreymon alone]]), necessitating their later quest to restore the Crests.

* DudeWheresMyRespect: The second generation Digidestined, despite all their success and triumphs will always be belittled by Matt at every opportunity they made a mistake.

** During the invasion of the real world, a group of Deadmon combine into a duplicate of [=WreGarurumon=]
** After [[spoiler:Oikawa temporarily takes control of Veemon, Hawkmon and Armadillomon, he is able to create copies of them even after the Digidestined have taken their partners back, although these copies cannot assume the Ultimate forms of the originals]].

* FanDisservice: Whenever Yolei is seen in her undergarments, it is often used to point out just how smelly and dirty she is, such as having a yellow-stained underwear, or Poromon being disgusted at her smell.

** [[spoiler:Yolei excitingly spying on the boys bathing in one scene, including not-so-gently pushing Kari to do so as well.]]

* ForegoneConclusion: the new Digidestined will survive through the end with TK and Kari hooking up together and marrying. The meat of the story is explaining how do they get into such position.

** Way back in the first chapter of the story, Kari states to TK that kept a specific painful moment that TK doesnt want to write. This moment is when [[spoiler: Ken gets KilledOffForReal]].

* FreudianExcuse: Cody's father was a police officer who was murdered by a criminal everyone assumed had reformed. Because of this, Cody became convinced that people can't change who they are, and this is why he refuses to accept Ken's HeelFaceTurn. [[spoiler: Only too late does he realize how foolish he was being.]]

** On the good side we have the kids (who are almost as confused as the readers), the gods (who's only real priority seems to be stopping Dagomon and likely Neodevimon), Gennai (who is currently more airtight than the space shuttle), and Matt and Sora's dads (who are also looking pretty lost at this point too).

* TheGreatestStoryNeverTold: Their true experience would have been smeared from history, if Kari hadn't convinced TK to wrote what truly happened.

** What makes it even better is Tai's total nonchalance at the event. Apparently, he did know that Davis fantasizes about [[MySisterIsOffLimits his sister]].
* HateSink: Early on, Mimi serves as nothing more than a despicable bitch whose only purpose is to be TheLoad and get on the Digidestined's nerves[[note]]While Matt may also had his {{Jerkass}} moments with the second generation Digidestined, but he also has justifiable reasons for not trusting them and does have some PetTheDog moments in-between.[[/note]]. You'd be forgiven if you believed that the author has some sort of grudge with her considering that she only makes ''two'' appearances in the Digimon Emperor arc, the least out of any first generation Digidestined. But then the next arc subverts this where we began seeing more and more of her nicer side such as voluntarily entering the Digital World to play with the Baby Digimons and helping Yolei clean up to act like a proper lady. Then by the Dark World arc, Mimi eventually reaches the pinnacle of her CharacterDevelopment where she apologizes to everyone for all she done with the Digidestined welcoming her with open arms.

* HistoricalHeroUpgrade: As seen under the AdaptationalVillainy entries, TK clearly does this a lot in his censored version of the novel. Examples include justifying Oikawa's crimes as him being possessed by Myotismon, Dagomon just staying out in the sidelines, the Digidestined's flaws and issues being downplayed to non-existent, Blackwargreymon reforming in the novel, Wormmon being reborn as a digiegg, and Ken having a lucky break, and surviving to adulthood, unlike what really happened.

* HowWeGotHere: The story begins with TK in the Distant Finale attempting to write a true version of what really happened with the bulk of the story being told in the past.
* {{Hypocrite}}: Hard to argue that this doesn't apply to Cody for the most part; he is one of the most vehement against just killing their opponents even when the original Digidestined argue that it's the only option (and most of the time they're right) because he says that criminals should be arrested and given a chance to consider their actions, but he consistently refuses to believe that Ken's changed from the Digimon Emperor even after the rest of the team recognise that.
* IKnowYoureInThereSomewhereFight: [[spoiler:The bulk of the Digidestined try to give a Jachomon-possessed Yolei, who became possessed after Ken died, a speech on how a worthy friend she is to them in hopes that she can break out of its control, after Davis' verbal abuse only makes things worse.]]

** [[spoiler: It's also revealed that Izzy's mom and dad were the final two members of the original digidestined. And Oikawa murdered them.]]

* AdaptationalAngstUpgrade: Almost every single angst and issues that a character is having in the canon are ramped up considerably here, sometimes even to {{Wangst}} levels.

** TheBigGuy: Cody, despite being the smallest, he attained this role when he killed a Deadmon-fused Wendigomon.
** TheChick: Kari, [[spoiler: of course now that she has limited control over her powers, mess with her friends and your ass is grass]]
** TheSixthRanger: Ken, just like the canon. [[spoiler:Until he dies.]]

* SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome:
** Their conflicts, personal problems, and other priorities are brought to full light here meaning that sometimes, it could detriment their missions in saving the Digital World.
** Don't expect that saving the life of a {{Jerkass}} character will make them become nicer to you. Yes this even applies to the Digidestined themselves.
** It takes a long time for CharacterDevelopment to kick in and one single event does not mean that person will have a change of heart.
** Human vs Digimon goes very poorly for the humans. Even if you're a protagonist.

* BlackAndWhiteInsanity: Cody's mistrust and anger towards Ken is ramped UpToEleven here. While Cody managed to forgive Ken during the Christman eve in the canon, in the fan fiction, Cody completely refuse to believe that Ken has redeemed himself, even attempting to kill him [[spoiler: when Jachomon possess him]]. This is despite the fact that all the other members of the Digidestined already accept that Ken has already proved himself of his redemption.

* ThePigPen: Yolei takes this UpToEleven. She seems to go day without baths, showers, or even brushing her teeth. Her underwear has been described as yellow. {{Squick}}.

* AdultFear: Very real as several of the kids parents try to prevent them from going [[spoiler: to the Dark World]] and on the World Tour. Justified since [[spoiler: Ken dies]].

* ShutUpHannibal: Oikawa traps Matt, Sora, and Izzy in illusions meant to break them and make them realize they're NotSoDifferent from him. Each of them are reminded of their experiences with their friends, and tell him to stuff it.

* RealityEnsues:
** Their conflicts, personal problems, and other priorities are brought to full light here meaning that sometimes, it could detriment their missions in saving the Digital World.

* ScholarshipStudent: Ken is a child genius and prodigy. This is averted in several ways down the story; it is revealed that [[spoiler: Ken did not invent the Gigas, the Dark Rings or the Control Spires, the plans of which were planted for him to discover and use. He is also revealed to be slowly losing his genius intellect after his final defeat as the Emperor. Although he manages to create physical weapons to continue fighting after Wormmon's seemingly permenant death, he slowly un-learns how he actually created them, and is no longer able to maintain their functionality as a result. This is later revealed to be the result of Oikawa deactivating the Dark Spore implanted in him, in order to impede his actions against him.]]

* DidntSeeThatComing: [[spoiler: The kids, one and all, freak-out when Ken dies. The fans did too, despite heavy foreshadowing that not all of the Digidestined would live through it. Justified in that no one really expected one of the kids to die.]]

* InstantAwesomeJustAddDragons: Imperialdramon takes until his second chapter to stretch his wings. But once he does things are pretty sweet.

** What makes it even better is Tai's total nonchalance at the event. Apparently he did know that Davis fantasizes about [[MySisterIsOffLimits his sister]].

A long-running rewrite of ''Anime/DigimonAdventure02'', [[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/3326594/1/Digimon-Adventure-02-The-Story-We-Never-Told The Story We Never Told]] is a much darker version of the original 02. The basic premise is that the canon show is a censored version of what really happened and T.K.'s wife convinces him to write what really happened during their adventures when they are young.

The rewrite attempts to construct a more cohesive and in-depth story than the original anime, infamous for its patchy writing and unresolved plots. Although advertised as a "darker" version of the story, it is in-actuality a more "mature" story, as a result of increased adult themes and situations, while still maintaining the same "fun adventure" theme of the original.

** Sora has retained much of her first-series personality. In canon, she adopts a more girlish personality after her[[Anime/DigimonAdventure original adventure]], such as playing tennis instead of soccer, becoming a YamatoNadeshiko flower seller with little trace of her tomboyish personality, and as an adult, become a fashion designer. Here, her tomboyish nature continued to develop rather than abate, becoming the captain of the girls soccer team, [[GetAHoldOfYourselfMan slapping Yolei when she gets hysterical]], giving a TheReasonYouSuckSpeech facing down Gargomon, and straight up punching Yolei, [[spoiler: who was being a bitch and ridiculing Sora [[KickTheDog over her parents and her feelings for Tai]]]].

* AdaptationalWhimp: Skullsatamon and Daemon of the Daemon Corps suffer from this ([[spoiler: partially because the main threat comes from Dagomon and Oikawa]]). In the original, the former defeats multiple Ultimate-level foes and even temporarily disables the Mega-level Imperialdramon. [[spoiler: Here, he gets taken out by just Metalgreymon and Paildramon]]. The later meanwhile was so strong that he could literally fight the entire 02 team with one hand (while using the other to open a portal to the Digital World) All that could be done was sending him to the Dark Ocean. [[spoiler: But this version of him tends to run whenever things get dicey and is brought down rather handily by just Metalgarurumon, Zudomon, and Shakkoumon]].

** [[spoiler: Oikawa's madness stems from the rejection of his "friends" and the death of his best friend.]]

* AlternateUniverse: It's a digimon fanfic, so of course there's the Digital World, as well as the Dark World.

* BadassNormal: Ken, the reason he is normal is that he doesn't have a partner since [[spoiler: Wormmon was KilledOffForReal instead he creates a personal artillery arsenal from the wrecks of Mekanorimon, thus the Badass]].

* DeathByAdaptation: Unlike the original where [[spoiler: Wormmon]] is reborn as a digiegg, here he is KilledOffForReal; the same happens to [[spoiler: Ken]] later on in the story.
** Ironically this would be an inversion in-universe as in TK's initial draft of their journeys, [[spoiler: Ken and Wormmon]] survives to the very end along with the rest of the Digidestined and having a successful career. Kari called him out on it, declaring that by censoring his death, he is essentially spitting on [[spoiler: Ken's]] legacy by not mentioning that he even died nor even give a thought of how much CharacterDevelopment that the Digidestined received as a result of this incident.

* BittersweetEnding: [[spoiler:Oikawa has finally been killed off, both worlds are saved, and the new kids' three Digimon are accepted to the Digital World. * KickTheDog: The Emperor beats up Cody during the final battle for no reason other than petty cruelty. This contributes to Cody's forever hatred against Ken.

* LaResistance: Ken's tyrannical reign causes a group of Digimon to form a fighting force devoted to liberating their world. Unfortunately their leader is extremely prejudicial against all humans and can't seem to get it through his head the Digidestined are the good guys. As time goes on they begin [[ThoseWackyNazis to devolve and get even more trigger-happy]]. Matters aren't helped when Gargomon [[spoiler: gets transformed into Blackrapidmon and destroys the Resistance in a blind rage]].

* LonelyFuneral: [[spoiler: Mummymon lampshades this, saying that [[Literature/AChristmasCarol Ebenezer Scrooge's funeral]] had a higher turnout than Ken's.]]

* MonstrousCannibalism: A lesser, humorous example; Tentomon refers to regular mosquitos as 'cannibals' when they attack him while he's in a jungle with [[spoiler:Izzy, Mimi, Yolei, Palmon and Hawkmon on their quest to restore the Crests]].

* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Ken has seemingly forgot the events that lead up to his conquering of the digital world, such as the fact [[spoiler: he was responsible (accidently) for the death of his older brother, how he came to know Wormmon, and the knowledge Digimon were living creatures]]. The realization hits him much harder than the original story.

* RelationshipUpgrade: Davis and Yolei becomes from a bickering pair that often argues got into fights with each other, to a bickering pair that just picks on each other for good fun and become truly best friends after reconciliation by the end of chapter 51.

** [[spoiler: Ken's death effectively breaks Yolei, leading to her brief possession by Jachomon.]]

* TeenGenius: Ken and Izzy

** [[spoiler:Oikawa in every way imaginable. First off, he's a member of the original Digidestined, as in the group Gennai told the kids about in the [[Anime/DigimonAdventure original anime]] and is described as being [[ChildProdigy as smart as Izzy]] despite being TK's age. And he has created a masterful plan. Instead of merely trying to weaken the Digital World like in canon, he is using Ken's Control Spires to literally drain the Digital World of data. When he realized Ken was becoming to much of a power in his own right, he created the [=D3s=], the [=DigiArmors=], and the new Digimon themselves in order to defeat him and also drain the Digital World of even more data. He is also the first character to permanently kill a Digidestined when he murdered Ken. And even better, [[NightmareFuel there's no hints that he is just being possessed by Myotismon, he's doing this all on his own]]]].

* BittersweetEnding: [[spoiler:Oikawa has finally been killed off, both worlds are saved, and the new kids' three Digimon are accepted to the Digital World. * DemonicPossession: Completely upset over [[spoiler: Ken's death]] and believing that all of her friends made fun of her, Yolei completely succumbs to the despair and becomes the host for [[spoiler: the fiery Digimon Jachomon, a noncorporeal digimon who followed the Digidestined to the real world, and uses Yolei to manifest itself into reality.]] Before Yolei, [[spoiler: Cody]] almost becomes its host, until he expresses regret for his treatment of Ken to the point he can no longer sustain it.

** TheSixthRanger: Ken, just like the canon.

* IKnowYoureInThereSomewhereFight: [[spoiler:The bulk of the Digidestined try to give a Jachomon-possessed Yolei a speech on how a worthy friend she is to them in hopes that she can break out of its control, after Davis' verbal abuse only makes things worse.]]

* PosthumousCharacter: [[spoiler: Ken]] from chapter 50 and onward where even after he dies, his influence in the story remains important.

** Chapter 49, aka the moment where [[spoiler: a member of Digidestined Ken dies, [[KilledOffForReal for good]]]].

* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: Immediately after [[spoiler: Ken dies]], Yolei's anger and hatred of the other Digidestined completely accumulates to the point that she lets the fiery darkness possess her and became Jachomon
* YankTheDogsChain: Ken's entire life is composed of this. [[spoiler: Want to make-up for being directly responsible for your brother's death by pushing him in front of a car,]] become the Digimon Emperor and beat up Cody and expects to get your Digimon back? [[spoiler:Too bad! Wormmon is KilledOffForReal and the baby Digimon in the Primary Village made sure of that.]] Finally manage to fully redeem yourself in the eyes of the Digidestined ([[KidsAreCruel sans Cody]]) and made it out of the Dark Ocean alive? [[spoiler:Nope! Oikawa kills you off in a meaningless death.]]

* OutlivingOnesOffspring: As in canon, the Ichijouji parents lose Osamu to a car accident, and only have Ken. [[spoiler: But thanks to Oikawa at the end of Chaper 49, they lose Ken as well.]]

* EvilKnockoff: As well as Blackwargreymon, at one point Arukenimon lures the Digidestined into a trap by creating a Spire-born duplicate of Zudomon that they assume is Gomamon under the control of a Dark Spiral, until it’s destroyed by Ikkakumon and Submarimon.
